Another chicken related one which baffles me is when people say which came first, the chicken or the egg?
The answer is blatantly obvious that the egg came first, a chicken comes from an egg so can't have come before the egg, so something close to a chicken would have laid an egg which genetic mutations turned into the first chicken.
Not sure why it's posed like an unanswerable or even debatable question.

The chicken isn't literally crossing a dual carriageway. He is crossing as he wants to die. He wants to get hit by a car and die, hence 'going to the other side'.

I'd been thinking that the joke was banal and a joke about boring jokes 😄

Not quite a joke but along the same lines, I recently heard
Honk if you’re horny (or variations of if you’re XYZ) doesn’t mean “if you’re horny you should honk”
it means “if you honk at me I will assume you’re horny not that I was doing something wrong”

Is this true?

It wouldn't make sense because at no point does it infer the chicken will be getting run over.

And 'to get to the other side' as a reference to death relies heavily on someone having a particular type of philosophical or religious belief about what happens when you die.

The joke is a joke because you expect it to have a punchline but it doesn't.

Anyone who thinks that deeply about it to me needs to get out more. But then here I am talking about it myself..🤣😐

I always thought the piggy was going to a market to shop as well. Like many old nursery rhymes, it’s a bit dark that one.

You may think that the humour arises from misleading people into thinking of an orange bird, but in fact the Venezuelan Squawking Carrot does indeed make a noise just like a parrot when harvested, and this joke is referring to this.

I hadn't thought of the chicken and the egg in that way actually, but i would believe you - if we're all evolved from animals, the chicken must've as well

I hate when people (usually tradesmen) won't give a direct answer to a question and will say 'well how long is a piece of string or 'which came first, the chicken or the egg'

Drives me mad as I just want a roundabout answer 🙄😭

I don't think the chicken necessarily wants to die though. It's just funny because the other side can mean two different things and we assume it means the other side of the road before remembering that it also means the afterlife and he is likely to die because he's a chicken crossing the road.

So you're saying that the joke is the irony of the chicken wanting to literally get to the other side only to be taken to the metaphorical other side?

Presumably the joke is a western joke though - and everyone would have an understanding of 'the other side' being death

Sorry might’ve missed out a key part - the phrase is usually on bumper stickers, so the person potentially doing something wrong is the person with the sticker on their car

I think this is wrong. It's only recently that people have decided that this is the joke within the joke. Until then, it was a joke like, What's white and lives in a tree? A fridge. Is a joke. It's joke is that you were expecting a punchline and got an answer.

What are they doing "wrong" though.

If you're beeping at someone, they're probably going slowly or they've cut you up

But the bumper sign means that the driver isn't paying attention to your anger and instead thinks that you're beeping because you're horny

Whenever I see one of those signs, I just know it's best to overtake such a person 🤭

When I was a little kid I didn’t understand the ‘ when is a door not a door ? when it’s ajar ‘ joke! Took me a while to get that one.
The one they had on here once about Boswell was a long running debate ! I can’t remember it now, but might be in classics ?
I do like non offensive dad jokes though.
