So far I’ve watched
Playing it Straight (the homophobia is rife!)
Fat Families (just horrific, ‘lard busting’ and shaming overweight kids)
Big Fat Gypsy Weddings (did the producers never want to intervene with what is essentially child abuse?)

Wife swap was always an eye opener

I thought of one I used to enjoy, decided to read the full thread to see if it was mentioned now can't remember it 😫

Not the ones I was thinking of but I did used to watch 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom (bit of a guilty pleasure)

Yes! And do you remember that weird ‘wrap dress over wide leg trousers’ style they also forced on just about everyone? It was hard to watch at times, women in floods of tears because they were just so forceful.

And the time one of them just ripped a woman's pants off. Surely that is assault.

My Dd and I used to love Teen mom when she was a teenager, the Og teen mums though not the later series. I think the "babies" are 16 now !

I saw that ch5 is bringing Faking it back it's on soon because the trailers have been running a week or so.

I used to love Faking It

DontbesorrybeGiles · 31/05/2025 08:45

I immediately thought of Playing it Straight when I saw your title. Also, There’s Something About Miriam.

I was late 20s 🙈🤣
No they can't be 16 😩

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 31/05/2025 08:49

The early 2000s in general were a cultural bin fire. I remember all the magazines of celebrities with big red circles around 'problem areas,' the size zero body shaming, the leaked sex tapes, the explicit music videos and glorification of pimp culture, the young female celebrities harassed and mocked until they had breakdowns.

OMG! 😱 I have to say I didn’t see that one!

Imcomingovertoyourplace · 31/05/2025 09:48

@SteakBakesAndHotTakesand the Perez Hilton website drawing cum coming out of celebrities mouths and big cocks on them. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times

omg I used to love the OG teen mom (USA version of course) with Maci, Amber, Farrah and Caitlin. Yes the ‘babies’ will all be 16/17 now 😱 Same age as the mums in the first series!

I also used to religiously watch ‘underage and pregnant’ on BBC3 that focussed different teen parents each series. I never forgot the episode with identical twins who both had a baby at 14/15.

Coffeeishot · 31/05/2025 10:14

Oh yes Underage and pregnant I remember that, it was quite sad really just children themselves.

JudgeJ · 31/05/2025 10:47

Coffeeishot · 30/05/2025 10:14

Oh I loved Brendan 😍

Another one that was good in the first couple of series and then it had all the 'of a type'. I seem to remember a very tall man from, I think, Preston who only wanted to eat ham sandwiches! Later the people in board were totally false and wanted to be a reality 'star'.

Coffeeishot · 31/05/2025 10:55

There was a gay couple who seemed to appear on everything for a while they did coach trip, 4 in a bed and one of them appeared in one of those live/work abroad programmes running a cafe, so yes people started seeing it as an opportunity rather than going on as fun.

I think that the majority of the sex tapes were recorded with the intention of being leaked.
All the sad celebrities jumping on the bandwagon getting their vulva out for the fan club.

i think it was the late 90’s or early 00’s but does anyone remember a documentary about pregnant addicted pregnant mums on methadone?

I remember 1 couple that said they were given a bottle to see them over Christmas while the chemists were closed. They said they had accidentally knocked the bottle over spilling most of it. So they ended up scoring claiming they had to do it for their baby son because you can’t take it out on a baby.

I can’t remember what happened with that family at the end. But i do remember the other family the mum had blonde curly hair. They had a toddler a little girl. Doctors said because she had stuck with the methadone program the baby was born completely healthy and wouldn’t have guessed.

I think its worse now. No-one has any shame any more. Love Island is horrific, I can't believe its allowed on TV.

I seem to remember Jo Brand getting quite upset. Mind you, I think one or two of the styles might have grown on her because she seems to dress more brightly these days, but it was an uncomfortable watch at the time.

I think she dresses more brightly because she's grown into her size i.e. people don't judge a fat 60 something, but they do judge a fat young woman so when she was young she felt she had to dress in black and bring her size up herself a lot. She's a national treasure now and nobody thinks much about her size.

ThePinkPonyClub · 01/06/2025 21:01

I loved all the American ones like 16 and Pregnant, My Super Sweet Sixteen, Made etc. I was obsessed with Brat Camp where a bunch of naughty teens were sent to the American wilderness to learn to behave - often wonder if those kids learned anything from the hours they spent in a small circle of stones for giving the camp leaders lip 🤣

The weirdest one I remember was called Bridalplasty and it involved a bunch of women competing to 'win' plastic surgery for their wedding, it was just plain odd when they were wheeled back into the mansion they were living in for the show after their surgeries in wheelchairs! Ready for the next round 💩

And Beauty and the Geek!

I thought she dressed in black because at the time it was pretty much the uniform for stand up comedians of what was considered the 'alternative' type, then.

Ditto Married at First Sight. When a radio station first 'married' two strangers back in the 90s (I think) there was outrage over it.

YouAreEntitledToMyOpinion · 02/06/2025 13:07

I remember Lizzie from Wife Swap who went on to pose nude in the newspaper. Also The Club on ITV2 with Sam Fox who got drunk all the time

Also The Salon on C4 where you watched people go in for a haircut and beauty treatments and if I remember correctly, it was open to celebs too who would wander in. Think the main stylists were Paul and Ady and there was a Brazilian guy.

And Shattered - anyone remember that reality show where they would not let anyone sleep!

Yeah I do think it was her dress sense at the time, amd times change dont they I mean I dressed similar and I wasn't overweight, and I don't dress like it now I'm older.
