To wonder if people were actually healthier when everyone smoked

(I have never smoked and used to hate going to bars etc that stank of smoke so this is a very against my own interests question but)

Smoking makes people thinner (it just does)

Cigarettes can be good for people with anxiety

Smoking is a social activity and social connection is good for health

Should we try and get a tiny bit more going?

(Not me I still don't want my hair to smell)

No it doesn’t, smoking may curb your appetite which can lead to weight loss but there are far more healthy ways to curb an appetite

Cigarettes can be good for people with anxiety
No it can’t, it actually increases anxiety and tension

Smoking is a social activity and social connection is good for health
Social connection is good for health, smoking is not. Get a hobby for a social life

Should we try and get a tiny bit more going?
A bit more what? I don’t know what you mean a bit more of but I’m going to guess by the state of your OP the answer is no

Lots of mentions of weight there. I guess you believe the worst thing that can happen to a person is to be fat.

User14March · 29/05/2025 21:44

GLPs will be the game changer here. Forget smoking. Everyone in my circle is on them.

the batshit is eroding your braincells.

Lavenderflower · 29/05/2025 21:47

I think the older generation - millennials and up are still smoking. The younger one are vaping.

SheridansPortSalut · 29/05/2025 21:47

People were thinner when there was less ultraprossessed food being marketed to them. People happened to smoke more at the time.

Ultraprossessed food hasn't infiltrated as much in Mediterranean countries.

Ultraprossessed food has spread largely from America. Anywhere it has cought hold is in the midst of an obesity crisis, whether they smoke or not eg Chile has very high rates obesity and consumption of ultraprossessed food. They smoke considerably more than the French

Your hypothesis is nonsense.

AppropriateAdult · 29/05/2025 21:47

Smoking isn’t “good for anxiety”. If you are already a smoker and therefore addicted to nicotine, going without cigarettes for a time makes you anxious and jittery, and so having a cigarette again relieves those symptoms. It doesn’t mean that cigarettes would be a sensible treatment for a non-smoker who was feeling stressed Confused

Also, I don’t know any 70yos who are in nappies, OP. What a weirdly inaccurate view of health and aging you have.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 29/05/2025 21:48

Cigarette companies are still profitable. Millions of people in the world still smoke, no it would not be healthier than not smoking, how could it.
100's of people secretly smoke.

Coconutter24 · 29/05/2025 21:50

Smoking also kills brain cells…. Are you a smoker OP?

Renabrook · 29/05/2025 21:50

Fragmentedbrain · 29/05/2025 21:15

I think maybe you're dismissing too quickly the fact that hardly anyone was obese when smoking was commonplace and nobody was long term unemployed with anxiety when smoking was commonplace

I guess I forget that people rarely think about health and just believe what they are expected to believe (understandably survival attitude)

I think you may be smoking something, not sure it is tobacco though

Never2many · 29/05/2025 21:51

Wonder if I can post before the deletion message.

Figcherry · 29/05/2025 21:52

I used to work with patients on Warfarin.
People who smoke or have smoked often had to take warfarin as their blood vessels were so constricted from smoking, their hearts and lungs were damaged.
They would develop diabetes, have a limb amputated but still smoke, have another limb amputated.
Those with copd can’t go far without oxygen cylinders.
Smoking ruins your teeth.
And a smoker and everyone in their household stinks.

Smoking absolutely fucks your body up.
Far better to be a bit overweight than smoke.

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 29/05/2025 21:52

I know people who smoke currently who are overweight. I also know (work with as clients) people with anxiety who smoke and do not work. If we follow your logic all people who currently smoke would be slim, in work and not suffering from anxiety and that's clearly not true...

My mum - a life long smoker - had extensive and severe lung cancer when she died. The only reason she didn’t know was that she was on such strong painkillers for her crumbling spine.

My dad, who smoked a lot of his adult life, died of heart failure, and COPD - congestive lung disease caused by smoking.

Go and search for pictures of a smoker’s lungs versus a non smokers, and ask yourself how it can possibly be healthy to fill your lungs up with black tar and toxins.

Correlation does not equal causation.

BashfulClam · 29/05/2025 21:53

my brother had cancer from smoking, my friend is dying of smoking related cancer. My mum has vascular dementia which her consultant said smoking will have contributed to due to the narrowing of her arteries. She also had lung issues. So sit there and be a fucking flippant clown if you want!

BashfulClam · 29/05/2025 21:54

I also know a lot of obese smokers btw!

BugBugTheTornado · 29/05/2025 21:55

Smokers are only slimmer because they can’t afford to buy food, with fags at £17 a bastard packet.

I gave up smoking to be able to afford to feed my Skittles addiction, I’m fucking fat now. There is no utopia, OP 🙄

Love,

A bitter, fat ex-smoker

LegoTherapy · 29/05/2025 21:55

Still no cure for stupid I see.

LBFseBrom · 29/05/2025 21:56

PeapodMcgee · 29/05/2025 21:14

Don't be silly. On a population level it is way unhealthier to smoke. On an individual level there can be certain pros alongside the cons. But they don't outweigh the cons for the vast majority of cases.

I agree. I gave up smoking many years ago and have been much better, no cough for a start. I was always getting upper respiratory infections, now I don't. My risk of stroke or coronary has reduced, veins and arteries repair fairly soon after smoking stops. I can't predict about lung cancer, that could still happen but one hopes it won't until I am very old and probably won't even know. I do know I am not exacerbating it.

However smoking was social, the smoking areas at work were useful, you'd meet people from other departments and useful contacts were made. There was also a camaraderie amongst smokers.

I think we have gone too anti-smoking here and hope it doesn't ever get to the stage where people can't smoke in their own homes or gardens, nevertheless it is a very unhealthy habit.

What is a GLP?

Hwi · 29/05/2025 21:57

When everyone smoked (I assume you refer to the 1920s. when upper class ladies were presented with jewellery encrusted cigarette holders for their 21sts) the world was different - no climate change, no pesticides, and most importantly - no hormones we all take voluntarily (those who take the pill and use HRT and similar) and involuntarily - all of us drink the water from the system into which hormone users pee. No central heating and no overeating, everyone a skinny legend and no ladies with size 40 shoes and a size 14 dress - it was a different and a very healthy universe!!!!
