Why don’t people talk about chart songs any more ?

Umbrella, Ella, Ella.

God that was a bloody annoying song

That was No 1 when DS was born. I hated it so much but then mine was YMCA 😂.

I don't think I've known what was No 1 since Atlantic 252 went off.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 30/05/2025 12:54

I realise now that many pop stars back in the day.Did indeed go by single, first names think the difference is they are less glamorous nowadays. Okay we had Madonna, Limahl, Tiffany etc but nowa lot of the names sound very Joe Bloggs esque like a guy /girl next door! I see it's just a personal dislike of mine! Are Dua Lipa and Eilish their actual names or stage names?

Yes, they are their real names. Dua Lipa is one of several modern pop stars of Albanian heritage.

Charts dont matter because we can all listen to whatever music we want, all the time. We're not restricted to whatever is being pushed by music companies to radio stations, or the limited variety of genres in a record shop. We dont have to listen to chart shows or watch top of the pops to hear singles, we top at our phones.

This is why I love my phone so much. I can check out of 2025 and go to one of my happy years it’s like a Time Machine to better mental health and I really value that and feel grateful it’s available to me .

Because its mainly rubbish in my opinion......most modern stuff is incomprehensible to me. But I grew up in the 80's so perhaps I'm spoilt music wise.....

IwantmyReptv · 30/05/2025 14:07

Swiftie1878 · 30/05/2025 11:25

How do you get to hear ‘new’ music, as a matter of interest? Like you, I tend to stream mine, but often feel I miss out on new stuff unless I listen to the radio.

Radio 1 is still fairly good for new music. Future sounds from 6pm every day. I force myself to listen in the early evenings to see who's up and coming. I don't want to waste time dwelling on music from the 80s and 90s.

My teen dc's don't listen to the radio though. DS recently "discovered" Fontaines DC. They've been on the radio since the pandemic.

Notyouthful · 30/05/2025 14:07

No 1 for me when born was Imagine by John Lennon as he was shot dead 6 weeks before

LoveTKO · 30/05/2025 16:37

No I don’t. It’s sad what’s happened to the music industry for the public. Seems a far less social experience. I check Spotify, listen to various radio stations to hear new music. I absolutely hate the drill/weird rap/drug dealer style music at the moment. I have very wide tastes - classical to dance music and lots in between - and some of the stuff now is abysmal. No tune/melody. I hate saying that as it makes me sound old 😆

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 28/05/2025 22:13

I don't actually 😄

but I think I could guess - maybe a song by Lorde?

its all about viral sounds these days I guess, which is a shame

Isn't Lorde a one hit wonder from about a decade ago? 😅

I don't think I've liked any music since about 2000 and I'm not even that old!

Acclim · 30/05/2025 16:49

I’M CURRENTLY LISTENING TO THE CHART COUNTDOWN ON RADIO 1 GUYS

CHARLI XCX 🙌

The song that was number 1 in the uk when I was born was Stevie Wonder, I just called to say I love you. In the US it was Tina Turner, what's love got to do with it.

Thankfully I just missed out on Jocelyn Brown, somebody else's guy. As that is literally my birth name (no I wasn't named after her, her hit was about a month after I was born 😅)

the80sweregreat · 30/05/2025 16:57

I had to look up ‘ ordinary ‘ and who Alex Warren was , but I realized I have heard this song on the radio and he sounds a bit like most other breathy male singers around just now!
I used to love hearing the charts , but I admit I haven’t for a long time and no idea who is number one these days !

Acclim · 30/05/2025 17:00

Listening to the Top 40 now and they don’t play the Top 20 in its entirety- they skip certain tracks

It's not really a thing anymore. Our kids laughed when I explained one day how we used to have the charts, measuring this endless roiling series of national microfads that everyone was into. It seemed so quaint to them.

It's just not like that today. Realistically the charts died a long time ago when the record companies worked out how to game them and you ended up with new entries at number one every week, and that ruined the key idea of the fad spreading its way around the country. But even music itself seems to barely be a thing now. It's more like background to whichever other media is capturing attention.

The sad thing is the charts were an absolutely brilliant concept! What a great way to create a national culture, for no other reason than pure fun.

If you listen to pick of the pops in radio 2 any chart from the late 90s on (I believe) they have to explain that records were issued, spent a week in the charts then vanished

I became very suspicious about the charts when the BBC were playing records that weren't going to be available for 2 months. The BBC itself was/is very suspect when it comes to the charts. Remember when Mathew Banister decided to axe all the old djs, he also stopped radio one playing any older bands or classic songs....he lost 5 million listeners and basically opened the door to commercial radio which is now 30 years later destroying the BBC bit by bit.

In the 1980s in one week in the charts picked at random, this week 1984, Duran Duran, Bob Marley, Phil Collins, Queen and Wham were all in the chart. I was at school with mods, punks, skinheads, I was(am) a teddy boy, we had people onto the indi scene, Reggie, pop, new wave and heavy rock

@Jabberwok "If you listen to pick of the pops in radio 2 any chart from the late 90s on (I believe) they have to explain that records were issued, spent a week in the charts then vanished"

Ah, that makes me sad. It was my era and it felt satisfying that my indie bands had cracked it and were now able to have hits, but it was paper thin, most of it. I feel almost personally ashamed to learn e.g. how a record I loved like 'Beetlebum' was in fact statistically the least successful no.1 of all time.

A lesson for us all there about what happens when you 'solve' a system that people loved in its natural state. You imagine you've made it and for a while it looks like you have, but there's no resonance in the culture at all – a bit like what football has turned into now.

JUST ANNOUNCED!

We all know the top 40 is rigged.
Actually the downloads chart is rigged too because it's cheaper to rig.

I listen to folk music! Don't care about the latest capitalist.

Likewise. Chart show etc completely replaced by Mark Radcliffe's radio 2 Folk Show and radio 4's Music Planet. Always have 5 of each downloaded on BBC Sounds app for work.

I'd still watch Top of the Pops if it was on though.
