Why don’t people talk about chart songs any more ?

No, I think it’s ‘Love is All Around’……

Umbrella, Ella, Ella.

God that was a bloody annoying song

ChessieFL · 30/05/2025 10:15

Other than the Christmas number one which gets reported in the news I haven’t had a clue what’s been in the charts for years now. I’ve never heard of Alex Warren before this thread.

I used to love listening to the Top 40 countdown on a Sunday afternoon, trying to record the songs I liked onto a cassette because it was cheaper than buying the singles!

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/05/2025 10:16

No idea, tbh.

Acclim · 28/05/2025 22:14

Not it’s Alex Warren ‘Ordinary’

Oh, I like Ordinary!

minnienono · 30/05/2025 10:17

No idea, streaming means that the number 1 is distorted by groups of individuals playing it continuously so is no longer relevant. I do glance at the album charts and we like browsing HMV for hours on end I do buy cds too

minnienono · 30/05/2025 10:19

I quite like Sleep Token who have charted this year but that might be the album charts too.

Fizbosshoes · 30/05/2025 10:24

I'm pretty sure Capital does the top 40 on Sundays, 4-7pm (wasn't that the OG time slot anyway?) We're often in the car when it's on.
Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga were number one for weeks last year and I loved that song!

But I find it weird how long songs seem to stay around for, these days (compared to ye olden days) for example Stick season by Noah Kahan seems to have been in the charts for literally years!

Everything is pretty instant now, you kind of don't need to wait in anticipation for Sunday evening to find out if your favourite is number one still not got over Mr Blobby keeping Babe off the number one spot

The Capital chart on Sunday is not the official chart compiled by the UK Chart Company. That one is broadcast on a Friday at 4pm on Radio 1 and 'Die With A Smile' was never official UK number 1, though 'Stick Season' was indeed in the charts for what seemed like forever.

I actually Like Alex Warren - his voice is distinctive and he has some good songs.

Never heard of him or his song. Most modern stuff is utter rubbish. Can't stand Billie Eilish or Dua Lipa - so overrated. Also hate the trend of just calling people by one name like Mabel etc. Bring back the 80s and 90s!

PennywisePoundFoolish · 30/05/2025 10:34

No idea. We have the radio on at night, and I really liked the song and felt proud I still liked current music. When I looked it up when I got home it came out in 2013! I'm just so out of touch

Nicole621 · 30/05/2025 10:35

There's just so much crap in the charts these days, I quite like 'Ordinary' though, reminds me a bit of Giant by RagnBone Man for some reason. I find so much stuff sounds like something else these days - or is just downright awful. I liked the Shaboozey one that was No 1 for quite a while. I hate it when artists like Taylor Swift release 40 mediocre songs all at the same time though - just do one good one instead, please.
The charts were so much better before streaming, I really miss TOTPs and The Chart show on a Saturday morning. I don't keep up with it all now as there's too much crap to trawl through or it's all the same songs every week for months.

I'm pretty sure there were plenty of mononymous artists in the 80s and 90s, it's hardly a modern trend!
I obviously disagree about modern pop music being mostly rubbish, as I said in a previous post, I've been an avid chart listener almost all my life and I don't remember a better time for chart pop than the present. We didn't have Taylor Swift in the 90s when I was a kid after all and she's my favourite musical artist of all time. I'm also a huge fan of Chappel Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Gracie Abrams and Charli XCX, all fantastic artists and all huge now. I loved Dua Lipa-s 2020 album 'Future Nostalgia' but was disappointed by her last one.

'Bar Song' by Shaboozey , though a good song, was never official UK number 1, though it spent a long time at the top of the US charts.
I'm a devoted Swiftie so I obviously disagree that her songs are mediocre, as far as I'm concerned she hasn't released a mediocre song since 2012. Also, she releases albums, the fact that three songs from those albums end up in the chart at the same time is because so many people are streaming the whole album and, in the UK, an artist can only have three songs in the chart at one time. Is she not allowed to release an album as a single piece of work as artists have done for decades? Do you want her to release it track by track over a matter of months? There were 31 songs on her most recent album, all perfect in my opinion!

I don't personally rate Taylor Swift or any of the artists you mention. Overall, the bands /singers back in the day were imo more talented with more charisma I wasn't a kid in the nineties but 16-26 so maybe that makes a difference. Each to their own though. We can all enjoy different types of music.

Dotjones · 30/05/2025 10:57

No idea or interest. Last time I checked the charts was a few years ago when The Kunts were trying to get to number one with "Boris Johnson is a Fucking Cunt" and the follow-up, "Boris Johnson is Still a Fucking Cunt" - I think both got to number five, Radio One obviously didn't play it on the chart show or even refer to it by name.

The Charts lost any meaning when they changed the rules to allow streaming. The charts should be based on sales alone.

I do agree, each to their own though I must point out that modern pop artists are more likely to write or co-write and co-produce their own songs and play instruments than many of the pop stars of the 90s, it's generally more expected of them now.
I'm still baffled by the idea that single-named artists is a modern day phenomenon though, pretty sure Cher, Sade, Sonya, Sabrina, Seal, Limahl and countless more were from the 80s and 90s, I don't think it's more common now!

Charts dont matter because we can all listen to whatever music we want, all the time. We're not restricted to whatever is being pushed by music companies to radio stations, or the limited variety of genres in a record shop. We dont have to listen to chart shows or watch top of the pops to hear singles, we top at our phones.

How do you get to hear ‘new’ music, as a matter of interest? Like you, I tend to stream mine, but often feel I miss out on new stuff unless I listen to the radio.

I think social media keeps them in the charts longer. It's mostly from reels and tiktoks that I've heard clips of current music, then I'll look them up.

Bbq1 · 30/05/2025 11:58

I realise now that many pop stars back in the day.Did indeed go by single, first names think the difference is they are less glamorous nowadays. Okay we had Madonna, Limahl, Tiffany etc but nowa lot of the names sound very Joe Bloggs esque like a guy /girl next door! I see it's just a personal dislike of mine! Are Dua Lipa and Eilish their actual names or stage names?

How do you get to hear ‘new’ music, as a matter of interest? Like you, I tend to stream mine, but often feel I miss out on new stuff unless I listen to the radio.

I use Spotify for all my music. I get the "Release Radar" playlist every friday which is a list of artists I like or it thinks I like's new releases. It also sends notifications if anyone I regularly listen to has new music out. Google does the same. It's worked out who I like, so I get a notification to say e.g. "Ghost released a new album today" and a link. Playing just a track on spotify will start an automatic playlist of related music, so I've often found new bands that way.

For all that (some) artists say they don't make money from Spotify, I've found a load of bands I never would have heard of without it. And I've then gone to see them live, bought the t-shirt etc, so there's a lot that have made far more from me than they ever would if streaming didn't exist.

namechangeGOT · 30/05/2025 12:47

Not a clue but I can tell you what was no 1 when I was born in October 1983! Karma Chameleon

Dramatic · 30/05/2025 12:49

I actually looked at the chart the other week, it has songs that were out months ago still in the top 10, it's not how it used to be.

in the UK, an artist can only have three songs in the chart at one time.

That's Ed Sheeran's fault. He broke the system when he had the Top 12 to himself after one album release.
