How would you split the holiday costs

How would you split costs for this holiday.
Large holiday home split between three families.
Family 1
2 adults, 3 kids aged 11 15 and 17 will take 3 bedrooms

Family 2
2 adults, 2 kids aged 8 and 14 will take 2 bedrooms

Family 3
2 adults, 2 kids aged 5 and 9 will take 2 bedrooms

How would you split both the house rental cost and the big food shop cost?

Probably I'd divide by 7 - the number of rooms being used. Family one pay 3/7th of the cost and the other two families both pay 2/7th.

Seems fairest.

Genevieva · 28/05/2025 16:01

3:2:2

teacoffeeorpassthegin · 28/05/2025 16:01

I’d just split the house rental it in 3 🤷🏼‍♀️.

With food I would expect the larger family to contribute more though.

Genevieva · 28/05/2025 16:02

If the child with their own room is in a box room then maybe 1:1:1.

Stormyseasallround · 28/05/2025 16:03

If I had the largest family I’d offer to pay 3/7 of it all. If I had one of the smaller families I’d insist on paying thirds of it all.

DorothyStorm · 28/05/2025 16:03

Family one pay more. Even with food as those ages will eat adult sized meals.

stank · 28/05/2025 16:03

Accomodation by the room (3:2:2) food divide by 3

Matcha95 · 28/05/2025 16:04

House according to rooms. So Family 1 pays for 3 rooms and the other families pay for 2 rooms each.

For the food, family 1 also needs to pay more as they have 2 teenagers that would eat the same or more than an adult.

2dogsandabudgie · 28/05/2025 16:04

Agree with pp, divide the house cost by number of bedrooms. Obviously the teenagers will be eating more food so each family buys their own snacks and each family pays for their own meals when dining out. Otherwise I think there will be problems.

A 5 and 9 year old are no way eating as much as an 11, 15 and 17 year old. That would annoy me.

Crunchymum · 28/05/2025 16:05

Accommodation split by room.

Food slightly more tricky but family one will most likely consume more with a 15 and 17yo so should pay more.

Maybe split food shop/s in a similar way? Or possibly PP?

YaWeeFurryBastard · 28/05/2025 16:07

Divide by 3 and the family with the extra kid should chuck a bit more into the kitty for food. I honestly couldn’t deal with some complicated equation for splitting of the food bill and would rather not go if that were the case.

Lmnop22 · 28/05/2025 16:10

It depends on everyone’s means and affordability but surely it’s easiest just to divide by three?

Youre all sharing a house, it’s three families, one has one more child so an extra room being used but that’s not added (I expect) to the total cost of the house which you’d have to rent as a whole anyway so just divide equally and have done with it.

TipsyRaven247 · 28/05/2025 16:13

1/3 each.
Just keep it simple.

TipsyRaven247 · 28/05/2025 16:15

I hope you know these families pretty well and this is not your first rodeo.
It does sound like a recipe for disaster.

OldieButBaddie · 28/05/2025 16:19

In this situation we have always ignored the children and split the cost by number of adults. We only have one child, so in theory could be out of pocket but it's the easiest way. I guess if we went on holiday with a family with 5 children that would have to be revised!

We tend to move beds around for dcs to share anyway

5foot5 · 28/05/2025 16:34

Rental definitely 3/7, 2/7 and 2/7.

For food there needs to be a decision as to which of the children have appetites that are the same as adults, eg the 14, 15 and 17 yo, then take it from there but counting children half.

OTOH some special food might be bought for children which wouldn't be purchased otherwise.

And OTOH again alcohol for the adults!

I think you need to work your food kitty out based on knowing your own family best

Caspianberg · 28/05/2025 16:40

I would just divide the house cost by 3. You will still all be using living spaces, kitchen, outdoor per family, and it’s easiest. I doubt a 7 bed v 6 bed house to rent was that much difference as it’s already big

Food cost - family with more pays more, but otherwise I think a 5 year old v 15 year old isn’t that different as 5 year old will probably eat more ‘kid’ snacks v older more main meal sizes. plus it just gets way too complicated.

So with 5, 4, 4 = 13. I would just do food bill divided by 13. Then each family pays there portion ie x5 or x4

Mightyhike · 28/05/2025 16:42

Rental cost 3:2:2 and food cost a third each.

Into 3! - I would keep it simple. I'm presuming you like/love these people that you're holidaying with.

I have never really understood why liking/loving someone means you should be happy to pay over your fair share.
I vote for divide by bedroom costs and for meals try and reflect the actual costs a little bit i.e. if anyone has a DC still on children’s meals they pay a little less.

PetiteBlondeDuBoulevardBrune · 28/05/2025 16:53

Accommodation costs 1/3 each with the agreement that the family taking 3 rooms will take the smaller ones.
Food : adults + kids 14/15/17 counted as one share, younger kids as a half share.

ThinkThrice · 28/05/2025 16:53

We have almost the same configuration whenever we travel with a group of friends and it's always done by bedroom so the largest family are paying 3/7ths and so on. Food wise we usually just group it into families and split it evenly by 3.

countrygirl99 · 28/05/2025 16:54

When we've been away as a group we've split accomodation by room and for food we've said: Under 2 0, 2-5 quarter, 5-12 half, over 12 and adults 1. Then add up and split by each family's "score". Booze split between adults.
