To think we CAN live on the mortgage

JaneEyre40 · 28/05/2025 09:34

Advice please -

Couple - Earn £10,500 a month
Mortgage - 3,700 a month
Nursery - 1,000 a month

Considering all other possible outgoings, do you think we can afford this and not feel pressured each month. What am I not considering? We've done the spreadsheet but I'm still unsure.

We will have about £65,000 in savings at the beginning of this venture.

Thanks in advance. House of a lifetime.

@JaneEyre40 was asking for advice and re-assurance from people who have made similar decisions. She clearly stated she'd done her budget and I'm sure had got mortgage advice from an IFA or broker.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking opinions and re-assurance for a big decision like this - especially on a large anonymous forum. It may not be appropriate for her to discuss it with anyone in real life or she may not want to for privacy reasons.

FGS - between the thread yesterday full of privileged knobs being an arse to the OP and this one full of jealous snobs it feels like MN has become some modern day version of Pride and Prejudice.

No wonder there is so much animosity among people these days if the reactions here are anything to go by!

Ooo what was the thread yesterday?

As if you don't know.

It is half term, I know that.

I guessed from your sarky responses! 😂 Tbh you never know on here if someone is taking the mick!

My favourite responses are from pp saying “Why is it unbelievable? It’s not a massive income” when it’s literally four times the average UK household income, and would put someone in the top 2%. Yes, you might not still be able to afford a private jet, but I don’t think you’d be getting into council tax arrears just yet.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 28/05/2025 18:41

You work in state school education and get healthcare with your job? That's useful.

I think I'd be very cautious about buying a house for this much money with an unmarried partner, as the one who is the lower earner could find themselves in a precarious housing position in the event of separation.

Can't believe people have these sort of incomes- another world!!

I can't believe people ask such ridiculous questions. Presumably bored on the train home 🙄

So? I live in London, it's absolutely not massive.

I'm just so surprised so many posters fell for it.

She started it earlier today when another 'trending' thread was about 'We just don't have enough money'.

Invented figures, tongue in cheek replies from her....

It was all a JOKE.

SOME posters 'got it'' because they suggested taking in ironing which is what the other poster was doing (to make ends meet.)

Quite.

But it has been trending for 2 days and has around almost 700 posts.

Baby is asleep, decided to catch up. Why do people think this is fake?

A - not an extortionate amount of money.
B - it's not that interesting.

Because it so obvious.

Try harder next time.

I’d like to say I’m really shocked by the responses and vitriol towards OP, but I’m not as we see the same any time someone earning above average asks any financial questions.

  • People earning <£100k salaries through PAYE won’t have financial advisors
  • Earning these sums of money doesn’t make you a financial expert - asking on a forum like this is no different to anyone of any other income level doing it. She’s not Jeff Bezos.
  • £3,700 a month is the mortgage on a three bed terrace outside of the inner zones now. The kind of thing which might cost £300k anywhere else.
  • About 15% of all workers now earn >£50k, so the two salaries mentioned aren’t unusual - particularly in the South East
  • The cost of living in the South East and particularly London is very high. That it’s cheaper where you live doesn’t really matter in context of the OP’s question
  • It is very strange to be chippy and aggressive towards someone for earning more than you.

I know lots of people in the same predicament.

Thank you. You're right about the house prices, it's actually a pretty good price for the property, 4 bed, lovely area with parks etc, fast (ish) train to London and a garden which I've not had in 20 years (I appreciate others may never have a garden, I can imagine that's tough especially with multiple children).

I'm actually curious about someone who would spend this amount of time creating a fake thread...or people posting on what they perceive to be a fake thread 🤔

@JaneEyre40 Just on the marriage front.

There is no way I would be making such a huge purchase without getting married or having absolutely watertight legal parameters in place should the relationship breakdown.

We do. And I absolutely agree.

The fact you misused a word as simple as 'extortionate' makes it harder to believe that you're a higher rate taxpayer. though it's not impossible. I personally believe you but think that you came here to wind people up. I'm sure that you deserve your salary and worked for it, though. What do you do?

Annielou67 · 28/05/2025 19:17

£3700 is a massive mortgage. It really depends on the house which sounds like it is a moderate house in an expensive area. If it were a country pile with endless work needed and a gardener and cleaner needed to keep it running - the answer is no, it is too much - a million on a larger semi in outer London, is affordable. I agree with the poster who said to get insurance against sickness etc.
That said, it is still a very large mortgage you will have for a long time. Can you not move a little further out and lose the worry?

How did I misuse extortionate? I said it's not an extortionate amount of money, which I believe to be true. I'm a senior manager in education. My salary is not large where I live in London.
