Over 50s. Have you outgrown/got bored of anything?

Mine is spas or spa days. I used to love them. Went to one recently and was so bored.

Dh and I camped (tent) recently and the place was so peaceful and beautiful I realised I enjoyed this much more than spa days or stays. The weather was good admittedly. But even so walking in the beautiful dales was so therapeutic. Also the wild swimming under waterfalls was blissful. Dh and I often camp but have found the best site. Cost less than £60 Inc electric hook up. First time we've used electric.

Dh and I walk lots. Loads of long distance walking. I also walk with friends. So it isn't a new realisation that I love the outdoors. Just a sudden realisation that spa days bore me now.

Have you outgrown anything? Or found a new love of something?

Outgrown pubs and clubs.
Fonder of early nights, period dramas and tea.

Charlottejbt · 27/05/2025 15:51

Fashion! Used to love it, now everything's drab and saggy and baggy (by which I mainly mean clothes in the shops, although me as well!).

MusedeBordeaux · 27/05/2025 15:52

Shopping. I just can't be arsed anymore. I used to love spending days clothes shopping, bags and shoes shopping, shopping for the home etc. Now i just think if I don't need it, I'll never go looking and always buying like I used to.

Like yourself though, walking and being in the great outdoors is my pleasure since turning 50. Early nights and books too!

VioletandMauve · 27/05/2025 15:54

Music! I used to love listening to new music, new bands and also mainstream stuff. Now I don’t know who is who and what’s more….I don’t care! Still listen to music often but older stuff that I’ve listened to forever.

JumpingDizzy · 27/05/2025 15:54

Oh yes shopping. And night clubs. I have a couple of friends who still love them occasionally. I'd much rather go to a gig or show. Or a nice meal out.

@VioletandMauve I listen to 80s alternative when doing chores.

No, I think I pretty much like the things I always did. I’ve always hated spas and shopping. Maybe I no longer have as much patience with certain types of male MOR literary fiction — the Julian Barnes or Ian McEwan type. I certainly read far less fiction by men than I used to.

Mary46 · 27/05/2025 15:56

Fashion or trying to be better and re wear things. Love walking too. Got bored of flaky friends.

Cynic17 · 27/05/2025 15:59

Definitely clothes shopping! So dull - but shopping for books or art is fine.

I don't think I ever really liked spa days - such fussiness - but needed to get to 50+ to be happy to admit it.

All-female groups (certainly of more than 4 or 5 good friends) - too much bitching and cattiness. Mixed groups are much better.

TV news - stopped watching at the start of the pandemic, coz it is so dumbed down and "tabloid". I get all the news I need from Radio 4 and newspapers.

Most TV programmes, in fact - no soaps, no reality TV. But I wished the BBC hadn't ditched most of its arts programmes.

Mygotupandgowent · 27/05/2025 16:01

Yes.Well over 50 but and never rich but always planning to buy/change/upgrade somrthing as soon as i could. Loved perfumes and clothes. Now ,i have no interest whatsoever.
I love reading, walking and cooking. I like houseplants and relaxing TV and radio programmes.
It was a combination of helping someone to sort their house ( lovely expensive stuff but masses of it) and the Birmingham refuse collectors strike. If i aquire something i dont need ,i am aware that we are drowning in stuff ,plastic tat is everywhere and i just dont want more.
Im also aware of how wasteful i was in the past .

RaraRachael · 27/05/2025 16:03

Definitely clothes shopping. I can't be bothered with Internet shopping and all the returning palaver or trying clothes on in busy shops
Now I've retired I don't actually need any new clothes.

Also eating out, particularly in the evening. It's just ridiculously expensive. We go out for lunch twice a month to a couple of nice cheap cafes instead.

Coffeeishot · 27/05/2025 16:05

Going places, I love going to.theatre or 2 a show but the thought of getting the train home after 10pm.so I'm not in till midnight just makes my heart sink! I think I'm heading for matinee territory!

Newgirls · 27/05/2025 16:06

Great thread!

I’ve outgrown caring about expensive bags, shoes, products etc. If they are given to me lovely thanks but I have no interest in browsing them for myself

a career job - been there, done it, can’t be bothered with office politics and time wasting - much prefer being my own boss

Caring what men think - used to be so influenced by men in my family, boss etc - I rarely come across a male who impresses me with his intelligence etc

Newgirls · 27/05/2025 16:07

Bands starting at 9 - ffs - over that too

Allschoolsareartschools · 27/05/2025 16:07

Sleepovers.
'Big' weekends with friends staying & lots of alcohol & late nights.
Still love to go out but for an early evening & for the love of God please go home as I'm far too grumpy in the mornings to deal with anyone else!

Swiftie1878 · 27/05/2025 16:08

Parties. Can’t stand them any more.
Much prefer a dinner or drinks where you can spend quality time with fewer people than a larger more superficial gathering.

WeegieW · 27/05/2025 16:10

Alcohol, staying up late, New Atheism, pessimism.

Schweden · 27/05/2025 16:11

Working.
I have, on the face of it, a great career. I am very well paid, WFH full time, in a challenging and interesting role. I am being pushed to go for a promotion. But, I am soooo bored of it. I would quit tomorrow if I could afford it. But have to limp on for another 2-3 years until my mortgage is paid off and last child leaves school.

Sherararara · 27/05/2025 16:11

Tastes change shocker!

GauntJudy · 27/05/2025 16:11

I agree with your changes @JumpingDizzy . I did see a band recently (from the 90s!) and got a seat rather than standing, bought 2 g&ts at the bar and just sat on my own enjoying my drinks and tapping my foot. Much more pleasant than standing in the sweaty throng.

HeddaGarbled · 27/05/2025 16:12

The theatre. I used to go a lot but now I don’t want to sit in an uncomfortable seat for hours and use the entire interval queuing for the loo.

sciaticafanatica · 27/05/2025 16:14

Just stuff in general… I’m very much about only buying what I need now.
i don’t want the clutter of more than one item

Dullmary · 27/05/2025 16:14

Getting out of bed.

AnnieAzul · 27/05/2025 16:14

Parties, big group dinners and entertaining

PorgyandBess · 27/05/2025 16:15

Camping 😂 we used to go for a long weekend with loads of friends when kids were small. You could not pay me to sleep in a tent and use an ablutions block now.

Clubs - no way. I’m well aware how tragic we’d look and I’ve felt that way since 40.

Fancy dress parties. Don’t invite me, I’m not coming. See also hen celebrations.

I like a spa break but it has to be for at least 2 nights. And a good one. Not interested in Champneys and the like and their crappy cheap, rushed treatments.

Book club - after at least 15 years, it dawned on me that I don’t even like half the women at my book club (which were primary school mums) and most of them chose books I didn’t like.
