Do be super annoyed and confused about Crown paint!

Kind of posting here for traffic really because I am frustrated and fed up.

I have spent all evening choosing a colour to paint my walls and finally settled on Crown Sail White. I am now looking at their website for a wood paint in the same shade for my skirting boards, and the only wood paint that they seem to sell is ‘bright white’. Literally the only colour! Surely it will look terrible to have two slightly different shades of white next to each other?? How does it make any sense at all to have about 20 different shades of white for walls but literally just 1 shade only for woodwork? Am I going insane / missing something here?! Would love to know if anyone who has decorated their home using Crown paint recently can shed light on this!

I voted YABU as you’re considering using Crown paint. Every time I’ve used the silk emulsion for walls, I’ve needed to put on 3 coats to get good coverage. I can get good coverage with 2 coats of Dulux silk. So I always use Dulux silk for walls and ceilings

Snickersnack1 · 26/05/2025 22:03

Thanks for the tip.

YANBU but why don’t you just use wall emulsion on the woodwork, with a dead flat/silk/gloss clear varnish as you prefer? Polyvine is great, env friendly and comes in 3 finishes I think.

Poppins2016 · 26/05/2025 22:08

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I find Crown paint isn't particularly nice to work with (in comparison to, say, Dulux) and the finish tends not to be very hard wearing either. Personally, I'd take a look at a different range.

I wouldn't be too worried about differing shades of white, however... I think it's pretty common to have differing shades on walls and woodwork.

Does this work?! That opens some doors…

I have found Crown fine, but in your situation of needing white and white I'd get it mixed. Valspar at B&Q is great: choose your colour from their selection or they'll scan something you bring (like a Crown Sail White tester patch... ) and then you get it mixed in both emulsion and wood paint. Or, just use emulsion with BIN primer underneath on your woodwork.

Snickersnack1 · 26/05/2025 22:11

Thanks, I am a new homeowner so I haven’t done this before. I am thinking that if I have slightly off-white walls and pure-white skirting, it will make my walls look dirty?
I didn’t know you could use wall & ceiling emulsion on woodwork?

I have a room with sail white matt walls, with whatever white silk I already had on the woodwork, and have never thought anything about it! Mind sail white is white with a hint of nothing anyway. Or maybe I'm just not very design-y (very likely!)

cyvguhb · 26/05/2025 22:12

Isn't it normal to have white woodwork whatever colour you have on the walls?

I agree with others, I find Dulux to be far superior to Crown

Purplebunnie · 26/05/2025 22:13

As others have said don't use Crown paint
If you are completely sold on the colour Dulux will colour match from the shade chart

SleepingisanArt · 26/05/2025 22:14

I always paint my woodwork with the same paint I use on the walls! Haven't used traditional gloss for decades - emulsion doesn't go yellow, dries faster, doesn't smell and is so much easier to touch up if it gets bashed.

I’m not very design-y either, which is why I need help 😂
Good to hear that it makes no difference in your room, that is encouraging!

According to Crown Crown Trade Sail White is a warm white, perfect for pairing with pure brilliant white woodwork to create a simple, minimalist look that isn't clincal.

Snickersnack1 · 26/05/2025 22:16

Thanks to everyone recommending Dulux. I may look again at what they offer. I chose Crown because there is a store near me and I can literally buy it tomorrow, whereas I would probably have to order Dulux.

Crown Decorating Centre should be able to mix it for you, I think you can buy it online too.

Empress13 · 26/05/2025 22:17

I have Dulux Timeless on walls with white skirting looks absolutely fine

Stickortwigs · 26/05/2025 22:19

Sail white is my favourite white, great choice. Just get a colour match from Valspar or Dulux for the woodwork.

Oh, that’s good to read, how did I miss that?! Thanks.

Don't you have a B & Q or Homebase near you?

Enrichetta · 26/05/2025 22:23

Dulux Trade is what you want. Leyland or Brewers will mix you any color you want, including F&B if you so choose.

Use Matt emulsion for walls, or silk if you want a slight sheen, or for more high traffic areas like hallways. Personally I prefer satin over gloss for woodwork, especially doors.

Nameychangington · 26/05/2025 22:23

Every decorator I have ever used has refused to use Dulux so I'm surprised to see it recommended.

Sadly not, I live out in the sticks!

Sail White with white woodwork is fine. Have used this combination before.

TinySaltLick · 26/05/2025 22:28

It's totally normal to have a slightly different colour on the woodwork, that's how most people do it, as the ranges are always smaller for the wood. I'd go with what you suggested it will look fine (and normal)

Snickersnack1 · 26/05/2025 22:30

@AnOldCynic @TinySaltLick Thank you, that is reassuring to hear.
