Do be super annoyed and confused about Crown paint!

Kind of posting here for traffic really because I am frustrated and fed up.

I have spent all evening choosing a colour to paint my walls and finally settled on Crown Sail White. I am now looking at their website for a wood paint in the same shade for my skirting boards, and the only wood paint that they seem to sell is ‘bright white’. Literally the only colour! Surely it will look terrible to have two slightly different shades of white next to each other?? How does it make any sense at all to have about 20 different shades of white for walls but literally just 1 shade only for woodwork? Am I going insane / missing something here?! Would love to know if anyone who has decorated their home using Crown paint recently can shed light on this!

I think it will look fine unless you really want them to match. Some of my walls are flat matte white and the woodwork is white satin, which looks brighter because of the sheen, and it looks fine. If anything it looks better because looks more like I’ve actually chosen a fancy off white colour for the walls. If you really want them to match I’d choose another brand or get the Crown one colour matched in wood paint. I wouldn’t use emulsion on skirtings unless it’s primed well and very hard wearing as you might want to mop them or scrub scuffs off

Thanks to everyone recommending Dulux. I may look again at what they offer. I chose Crown because there is a store near me and I can literally buy it tomorrow, whereas I would probably have to order Dulux.

Just a heads up - Dulux paint smells much stronger, so if you suffer asthma or migraine, as I do, Crown is always a safer option.

Thanks, I am actually asthmatic so this is worth knowing. Cheers!

Sail white with pure brilliant white or trade white skirting will be fine. We have been very happy with Sail White and never found Crown a problem as long as you stir it.

Dulux white cotton is pretty similar to sail white IIRC and a cleaner/whiter shade than Timeless.

I always use eggshell for woodwork as I hate anything silky or glossy. And bright white skirtings aren't my favourite either. I always use an off white on my skirtings. Walls are just white emulsion.

I have Dulux Timeless on walls with white skirting looks absolutely fine

Me too

Plain white is fine. Looks fine on their site. Just find a low odour one in the finish you like. Massively against emulsion on woodwork. Too hard to clean.

Every decorator I have ever used has refused to use Dulux so I'm surprised to see it recommended.

I agree. I usually use Crown Solo for walls and find it very easy to work with, although my living room was done with Dulux White Mist last time and that was fine too.

This time I used Dulux pure brilliant white in the living room and needed to paint one wall four times and the others three! (And that was just trying to cover a whitish shade of paint). It was shocking quality.

I used a Valspar made for me colour on the chimney breast and that was excellent to work with.

Enrichetta · 27/05/2025 06:43

Those saying Dulux is inferior, were you using DIY Dulux or Trade - I always use Dulux Trade and I find it to be excellent, easy to apply, deep colour and durable. (And no, I don’t work for them, lol… it’s what all my contractors used.)

Emulsion in whichever sheen you want for the walls higher sheen wipes easier for high traffic areas. Although they now sell dead flat (Matt) wipeable paints. I prefer eggshell for the skirting and doors as I don’t like gloss. Unless using oil for the wood.

Depending on the state you may need to prep by sanding, filling and caulking gaps.

AlpacaMittens · 27/05/2025 23:09

Valspar all the way. Go down to B&Q and get any colour mixed - we're talking hundreds of colours, for walls, woodwork, whatever. I'd suggest going for the Valspar Premium (or what's it called), it was amazing. I think B&Q have a sale on at the minute. They also very often do 3 for 2 for paint.

If you go for Dulux then get Dulux Trade paint and not the retail one (retail has the Dulux dog on the tin) the coverage and durability of it is far superior.
