Vinted - do people just want something for free?

Bit of a rant but I'm genuinely curious. I put things up on vinted at a discounted price sometimes with the labels still on them and the original price still on them and people still look for a discount.

Example: I currently have a designer hat for sale. Retail price £45.00. The item has the tags still on with the retail price attached. I have it up for a fiver and people are offering a £1.50 for it ... Like it would cost me more to buy an envelope.

Has anyone else found this?

Yes. That seems to be how it is most of the time. IME you need to list things for slightly more than you want or expect to get. List the hat for £8-10 and you might get nearer the £5 you're looking for.

Womblingmerrily · 25/05/2025 23:43

Yes, they do. Then once they've paid you £1.50 for it they want it wrapped and boxed and hand delivered.

After that they will say it's not quite what they want and they expect a full refund with postage.

Then you'll receive a crushed, clearly well used hat back.

Theunamedcat · 25/05/2025 23:44

Don't sell things so cheap it's not a car boot people haggle worse on vinted

Giraff3 · 25/05/2025 23:49

always put it up for a bit more to allow for haggle. Thats what i do when i sell

Example, want £5 for jeans, so list it for £8. I accept the £5 offer. Ive sold it for the price i want and the buyer feels they got a bargin lol

I always haggle.......no harm in doing it. Its either accepted or declined.

NeonUnicorn · 26/05/2025 06:52

It's getting harder and harder to sell for a decent price on Vinted. And it's because of sellers like you selling things for a fraction of what they are worth. Why are you only asking a fiver for a brand new £45 hat? As a buyer I (obviously) love a bargain. But as a seller it's really frustrating when other sellers price so low because then buyers expect those prices. And, whatever the price, there will always be someone who tries to get it even cheaper.

Summerhillsquare · 26/05/2025 07:13

But why be offended? It's just an app, ignore the silly ones.

VivIsBlonde · 26/05/2025 07:14

Why allow offers if you’re not prepared to accept them?

KnewYearKnewMe · 26/05/2025 07:20

If you offer something so low, you devalue it. Why put £5 for something that is £45 NWT?

it’s like offering things for free on Facebook - all the time wasters appear.

Put a realistic price and you’ll get realistic buyers.

DarkForces · 26/05/2025 07:23

Well yes. By the time you add on postage and Vinted fees sellers are paying a lot more than we offer to take an unseen punt on an item of clothing it's hard to return. Of course we want to pay as little as possible

begone25 · 26/05/2025 07:24

I probably would have listed that for £15 and accepted £10. There will always be chancers but it’s easy to decline the offers. I’ve found people are generally bringing their prices in line with eBay. It’s also worth checking sold prices on eBay (using the filters) for a similar item and using that as a guide for pricing.

I sell things cheap because I’m just trying to declutter my house and get rid of all the many clothes we don’t need and some we’ve bought and not worn. I don’t really care about making lots of money for them, I want quick and easy sales so list cheap and am selling lots quickly. I keep the money in Vinted and use it towards the next sizes for my DCs but I don’t need the money it’s just nice to have. I imagine it’s the same for lots of others selling cheap. Just because it’s not what you want to do doesn’t mean others shouldn’t if it’s what they want.

longapple · 26/05/2025 07:36

Except vinted will only allow offers of 40% off, so they can't be offering that low.

Missohnoyoubetterdont · 26/05/2025 07:44

Where are all the cheap bargains? I think the opposite with Vinted- that everything is overpriced! People asking ridiculous amounts for worn second hand clothes. I rarely see anything reasonable.

Superhansrantowindsor · 26/05/2025 07:46

My dd sold a dress on Vinted last week for £40. It was BNWT. Buyer said it wasn’t as described and had a flaw. They wanted to keep the dress AND have a full refund. I’m not on Vinted- is this a common occurrence?

HermioneWeasley · 26/05/2025 07:46

Agree @Missohnoyoubetterdont i find it hard to search on there and the photos are of worn, crumpled clothes for 80% of the new price. Never bought through there whereas I get quite a lot through eBay and love a charity shop rummage

SVTqueen · 26/05/2025 08:19

Edited because I didn’t read the OP properly 🤪

Yes it is quite common (the Vinted reddit sub gives a good idea of the stunts both buyers and sellers pull). Your DD can insist they return it for a refund but the buyer has to pay for a return themselves.

Sometimes people are justifiably unhappy with their purchase but there are people who will use the platform to try and get things for free. Unfortunately Vinted's mediation is quite poor when things go wrong in either direction. For that reason I only buy or sell low value items on there - usually around the £20 mark or less. I use eBay for higher value items.

ThrowawayAccount29 · 26/05/2025 09:46

Things are only worth what people are willing to pay. I always put in the lowest offer that Vinted allows and i probably have about a 60% success rate. Some people counter offer and some people just let me have it for what I’ve offered. My view is that the item is worth precisely zero until it’s sold 🤷‍♀️

On the other side of it, I always accept what people offer me on Vinted or Facebook marketplace. I’m selling things because I don’t want them, so I’m just grateful to have the space back in my house plus some money 😂

Surreymum538 · 26/05/2025 09:49

It’s vinted, people want a bargain. They are taking a chance buying as if it doesn’t suit/fit they can’t get a refund, plus most stuff is used. IMO lots of stuff is very overpriced for used items.

Southwest12 · 26/05/2025 09:56

I will pay asking price if I think it's good value. I just paid £40 for a jacket that's immaculate and retails for £160.

I had someone offer me £3 for a dress I had on for £5 (bargain at that as it was unworn). I countered with £4 and they came back with £3.50! Then you put some things on for £10 and people buy it straight away without haggling!

NebulousWhistler · 26/05/2025 10:11

Yes. Buyers are absolute chambers. That said I sold something to a lady who sounded super hard up on Vinted recently (shoes for her DD. I told her to counter offer at £1 and I’d accept it and she wouldn’t hear of it. Paid the full price. I put a fiver into the shoebox to cover postage.

Normally though I decline every counter. Not because I care about the money - I use it to declutter - but my time (ie what it takes to pack the item, walk to the nearest newsagent and back) is worth considerably more than £2, if I were to work it out vs my earnings.

Giraff3 · 26/05/2025 10:39

Before vinted and ebay for clothes, it would go the charity shop, so you wouldnt get any money for the items

Least now, you get something for them. Ive sold loads over the years. Ive always found vinted to sort any issue out promptly and alot better than ebay.

The parcel company that has lost the most parcels is Evri by miles.

I dont understand why people are moaning about offers, counter offers.....the item is only worth what the buyers feels its worth or is willing to pay.

If you dont like that, either make it clear on the ad that no offers accepted or give it to charity or a friend like you would have done pre vinted, ebay, facebook market place lol

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 26/05/2025 10:45

People like to take a punt. What annoys me is when they ask for a price drop, get the item and then leave a complaining review because it wasn't ironed.... clearly shown in pictures ( and if they want an ironing service I wasn't more than £2.50!)

User79853257976 · 26/05/2025 11:00

I would have listed that for £25-30. Maybe you made it look like a fake?

Mochicat · 26/05/2025 11:12

I’m finding the opposite and people seem to want the same price they bought the item for, yet by the time you pay for postage and buyer fees it’s cheaper to buy new!
