Vinted - do people just want something for free?

Bit of a rant but I'm genuinely curious. I put things up on vinted at a discounted price sometimes with the labels still on them and the original price still on them and people still look for a discount.

Example: I currently have a designer hat for sale. Retail price £45.00. The item has the tags still on with the retail price attached. I have it up for a fiver and people are offering a £1.50 for it ... Like it would cost me more to buy an envelope.

Has anyone else found this?

Just decline the offer or say no. Sometimes there's a reason for example I was doing a secret Santa with my friends over Christmas and so I offered a super low price for something but I explained why! I think people make low offers due to budget or maybe they think the money is better int heir pocket than yours but you don't have to accept it.

I don't agree with offering for more either unless it's a sought after item.

goldtaps · 26/05/2025 11:21

Yes it’s stupid now on vinted. Even if I want to sell something, I’m now too stubborn to accept stupid offers of £1 less

My dd sold a dress on Vinted last week for £40. It was BNWT. Buyer said it wasn’t as described and had a flaw. They wanted to keep the dress AND have a full refund. I’m not on Vinted- is this a common occurrence?

This just happened to me for the first time. I was horrified, apologised and gave them the item as it was only a few pounds. It only sunk in later that they must have been banking on exactly that - I could have argued the toss, but was too busy to fight over such a small amount. £40 I would be gutted!

Mochicat · 26/05/2025 11:12

I’m finding the opposite and people seem to want the same price they bought the item for, yet by the time you pay for postage and buyer fees it’s cheaper to buy new!

Exactly this. It baffles me to be honest. What are these sellers even thinking?!

Mix56 · 26/05/2025 12:22

You have to match the price of similar items. Or get zero offers.
Ive just sold a few items that no longer fit my son
It’s depressing & insulting selling a North Face hoody for £10, or Timberland trousers.
and then people want to haggle
I have to pack it up, pay for the ink & paper for printing the label & drive to the depot point.
Basically not worth it.

ClaudeShowers · 26/05/2025 12:27

It’s funny how often the make up / skincare/ perfume on Vinted is cheaper elsewhere online! Bizarre. There are so many declutterrers on Vinted that just want to get rid of the item, there’s always someone undercutting the more stubborn ones.

Paellama · 26/05/2025 12:28

There are additional fees and postage to take into account when buying on vinted, so these have to be budgeted for in the total cost of the item. Especially when sellers only offer certain postage options which are more convenient to them , but expensive for buyers.

And that's without considering that it's a huge gamble to buy unseen online without any of the usual rights to return and get your payment back.

If a seller sends something that's unacceptable, was misdescribed or is just completely the wrong item, the buyer is liable to pay return postage (assuming that seller 'accepts' the request to take the crap back).

FortyFacedFuckers · 26/05/2025 12:38

I agree I have loads of brand new stuff with tags, most of it river island/next dresses/tops that cos at least £45 and I am getting offers of £2/3

greengreyblue · 26/05/2025 12:41

That does seem cheeky. I’ve sold and I buy on Vinted. Some people want a lot for second hand H&M for example £20 when someone else is selling a BNWT Boden dress for £20. In that case I’ll offer less but wouldn’t on the Boden. You just click decline offer. No biggie.

Have never had silly offers like that. Can I ask why so many people have clothes with tags on? Why don’t you return stuff?

Callie247 · 26/05/2025 12:50

I think eBay can be worse even when you say you don’t accept offers people still message asking if you’ll accept less.

FortyFacedFuckers · 26/05/2025 12:50

@greengreyblue i must admit I very rarely return stuff, just never get round to it on time but a lot of it was stuff I had bought but never got round to wearing it and then lost some weight.

the buyer has to pay extra postage to return the dress to you, but some do this so that you end up saying just keep it. It happened to me, they wanted to keep it and get a refund I said they had to return it- check the buyers feedbacks cos it will show up if they regularly do this.

So if you're getting an offer of £2 it must be listed at £5. Buyers can't offer lower than 40%. List it at more if you want more, or say in your listing no offers. Or just click no.

Return things to the shop if you want what you paid back.
Things from vinted very commonly have hidden faults. If you're selling a bnwt dress that cost £45 for a fiver then I'd assume it's got a stain or pull on it that you've folded underneath in the photos. If you had it on at £30 then I'd be more likely to believe it was really in bnwt condition.

Justgoingforaweeliedown · 26/05/2025 13:01

Yes drives me mad. I've just sold a load of baby clothes, nothing more than a couple of pounds and all like new condition. Brands like mango kids, JoJo, mayoral etc. People make bundles then just knock half the price off, essentially just asking for things for free. When I reject the offer, they just buy the one or two items they really want for the same price they offered on a bundle. Honestly puts me off selling, just can't be bothered with it.

Exactly. Vinted sellers also seem to think they can uplift the category and that makes it true, so something in actually only satisfactory condition is described as good and bought at a higher price (or at all) on the strength of.

If I get a sense that what's on offer isn't really anywhere near as good as it superficially appears, I'm not going to risk much on it.

That's because I only want a couple of bits so not willing to pay a premium to dispose of your stuff for you

Tiredofwhataboutery · 26/05/2025 15:38

I feel like I’m getting vinted wrong as I never haggle. I do aim for good- new condition at about 10-20% of original purchase price. Don’t tend to go over a tenner per item but will often buy a few bits from same seller to make postage worthwhile especially for kids stuff.

I’ve never complained or sent stuff back even though I’ve bought hundreds of items over the years. The odd dodgy thing can go to charity or ragbin and chalk it up to experience.

It's hardly a premium. If you only want a couple of bits that can't really be priced much cheaper and don't want a few more bits for free, then don't offer to take extra bits off my hands for free. You're hardly doing anyone a favour.

Shetlands · 26/05/2025 15:46

I buy lots of good quality items on Vinted. If I saw a £45 hat with tags on for £5 I'd wonder what was wrong with it. If you put it on for £15, I'd offer £12 to cover my postage cost. I also consider how long something's been up for sale. If it's under a day and I really want it, I'll just buy it. If it's a few days or weeks, I'll probably offer 20% less. However, if it's been on for months, I might offer half the asking price as it looks like nobody else is interested.

No3392 · 26/05/2025 15:50

I'm sick of buyers asking me to measure stuff. It's a BNWT Boohoo dress for £5. No.

Koalafan · 26/05/2025 15:50

Vinted is essentially a jumble sale.
I just don't understand the folk who say it's great. At least on ebay you could get more realistic prices.

Reallyyyyyy · 26/05/2025 15:52

Probably. But i always pay the price asked or go 10% or 20% lower offer if I think it's too high. Just reject the silly offers.

HundredMilesAnHour · 26/05/2025 16:12

I just collected a jacket that I bought on Vinted. Described as ‘only worn a few times, very good condition’. The collection of stains on the front was not mentioned nor shown in the photos. I paid £32. I’m not impressed. It is actually washable so when my machine finishes, I’ll know whether the stains have come out or not. If they don’t, I’ll be giving the seller a hard time. Why do people do this? Is being truthful really so hard?

While I’m waiting for my washing machine to finish, I’m doom scrolling on Vinted. Just saw some shoes that someone claims they’ve only worn once. Yeah right. In the London marathon in bad weather conditions maybe!! 😂

I get so fed up of sellers like this. But there are also some wonderful honest sellers offering good value so I guess like most things in life, we have to take the good with the bad.
