Closing parts of a garden due to winds

OneNaiceTealMoose · 25/05/2025 12:51

I'm in the NW and a RHS garden centre has closed areas due to winds and trees possibly falling. The garden centre has established trees for many decades and they've closed many areas of the garden due to winds. Yes it is windy today, don't believe it's a severe weather warning and winds seem to be 43mph.

Aibu in thinking that's over the top to close any area with trees?

I’m guessing they’ve had a professional look at the trees and a risk assessment their insurance is happy with.

TheNightingalesStarling · 25/05/2025 12:54

They ate responsible for the health and safet of visits and staff. . Its their decision.

OccasionalHope · 25/05/2025 12:54

They won’t want a tree, or a hefty branch, falling on someone.

DandelionPockets · 25/05/2025 12:57

Whilst it may be an inconvenience and disappointing, I assume they've made a conscious call based on weather conditions. Better safe than sorry.

Mareleine · 25/05/2025 12:58

Surely they have made a decision based on all the information that's available to them not just for shits and giggles though? For example they might know they've got trees that are precarious which they're waiting to get someone to sort? Why wouldn't you trust them? No tourist attraction wants to part-close for any reason, it hits their bottom line, so when they do, there's always a good reason.

A bit of wind? Not serious..plus if the tress are so terrible that they could fall down, surely not safe whatsoever

Which could happen at any time and I don't see any parks shutting down?

Tree / branch drop is part of an outdoors risk assessment
gusts over 40 miles is a trigger point for many parks etc
the venue are protecting the public

Better to be safe than sorry. It is extremely windy in the NW today. I still remember this tragedy: https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/boy-8-killed-by-tree-1053280

Is 40mph considered extremely windy?

Probably not. Because they should be pruning if the branches are at risk of falling and the park is opened the next day.

Why is this appearing to bother you so much? A garden centre made a call on safety grounds. It’s not personal!

Because I can be bothered by something
Does that bother you?

40mph is classed as a gale on the Beaufort Scale, so yes, it’s very windy. Force 8.

Well, good luck with that.

Big trees blowing in the wind can be quite scary, it's pretty blowy here and our trees are pretty wild. It can be more dangerous at this time of year with all the leaves on the trees, in Autumn and Winter the trees can resist more wind.

Is 40mph considered extremely windy?

If I was cycling home from work a 40mph gust would blow me off my bike. If you’re at RHS Bridgewater they do shut bits off if it gets v windy - some of the trees there are old and protected, and even though they have qualified arborists working there, there are hundreds of trees, and all it takes is one diseased branch on one tree to cause an accident.

angelinawasrobbed · 25/05/2025 13:09

Their insurance probably requires it

A family have cycled there on a family bike, so not too bad ....

Occupiers liability laws & insurance.

Someone local to me was seriously injured when a tree fell on their car. It does happen.

The alternative is to chop down trees in places where there is a risk eg where public are walking.

youcannaecallherfanny · 25/05/2025 13:10

Because they’re the professionals and have made a call on safety and probably insurance reasons.

its really not that deep op calm down.

KumquatHigh · 25/05/2025 13:11

I’m at an athletics competition and it didn’t feel windy at all and a marquee just got caught in the wind and flew into a load of spectators. The St John’s ambulance team had to leap into action.
