Closing parts of a garden due to winds

OneNaiceTealMoose · 25/05/2025 12:51

I'm in the NW and a RHS garden centre has closed areas due to winds and trees possibly falling. The garden centre has established trees for many decades and they've closed many areas of the garden due to winds. Yes it is windy today, don't believe it's a severe weather warning and winds seem to be 43mph.

Aibu in thinking that's over the top to close any area with trees?

Absolutely right decision. The only way I might be a bit annoyed is if they haven’t posted on social media or website when the decision was made so people have chance to see it has happened if they are thinking of visiting. Even then may be concentrating on moving the public away and signs there.

I think a lot of it could still be open and I don't know why they have closed most of it. But not my decision. Not sure if it was on SM etc

Not being funny but the last time iq as at the NT than a tree fell down. No winds.

Not being funny either but what do you know about arboriculture and ecology? Many veteran and ancient trees, deliberately have standing dead wood and features for protected species.

This makes them dangerous for the public when there are high winds, you cannot just chop down a feature if it contains a bat roost with out consulting Natural England and having a solid case why.

No one cares that you don't like it, they have to comply insurance and the HSE regulations as well as Natural England considerations to take in to account. All you have to think about is moaning on MN because you cannot do as you please, entitled much?

If something was to happen it would happen to me so I would be facing the consequences.

And they would be facing the consequences of having made an assessment and ignored it, leading to the hypothetical harm to you. That might be £50 compensation and an apology, or it could be a trial for corporate manslaughter.
That's what I ask my teams to consider when RAs are signed off. If, god forbid, something awful did happen, would they feel happy standing up in court defending their assessment.

NeuroSpicyCat · 25/05/2025 13:31

Go to a different garden centre? There are plenty.

BobbyBiscuits · 25/05/2025 13:32

They would never sacrifice profit unless it was legally what they needed to do. The trees have been assessed as not being safe in winds above a certain strength. I doubt they did it for no apparent reason.

Errrrr no. I've traveled to this one and it's a national trust type one.

Their risk assessment will also consider that trees can fall at any time

Don't you think

I'm entitled to have an opinion, unless you think that's now not ok? I'm entitled to have feelings. I'm entitled to make a post on mums net. We are have entitlements. So what's your concern?

40 mph is when forest schools close here, included the school based sessions so this sounds right.

Crikey, some rather middle class foot stamping going on here.

The problem is that you posted in AIBU. Everyone thinks you are. Perhaps Chat or Gardening would have been better if you want a nice gentle confirmation.

Allthegoodhorses · 25/05/2025 13:38

Do you ever get the feeling some people just wake up spoiling for an argument?

Because its blatantly obvious you have an uneducated and inexperienced opinion and zero clue about the intricacies of public liability insurance/HSE/arboriculture and ecology.

So complaining about subjects you know very little about and refuse to accept makes you uneducated and entitled.

rainbowunicorn · 25/05/2025 13:40

Trees are more vulnerable to high winds when they are in leaf than they are during the winter months. They are also more likely to come down at lower wind speeds when in leaf than they would be when not.
Although I suspect you don't really care about that and are just on the wind up.

sundaybloodysunday12 · 25/05/2025 13:41

I find it really odd that you would query this.

It’s health and safety. They don’t want a tree or a branch falling on someone.

What is it you take exception to?

Yes we should have a mass ban on going outside.

But I'm allowed an opinion right. Or not?

Yes you are and all the posters on this thread are equally allowed to have an opinion of you and your posts.

OldGothsFadeToGrey · 25/05/2025 13:49

Trees fall down all the time. Pretty much every time I go through Harrogate after a bit of breeze there’s a fallen tree. It happens.

OldGothsFadeToGrey · 25/05/2025 13:51

Of course you are allowed an opinion, even if it’s a stupid one.

Even if it’s that you would rather risk being hit by a fallen tree, seeing a garden shut down, risking manslaughter charges, etc. As well as you potentially being dead. My opinion is that that would be stupid. Just go and stand under the bloody tree if it’s bothering you that much. See if you win a Darwin Award.

Posts on AIBU.
is told categorically YABU.
Argues with everyone saying YABU.

what was the point of posting if you can’t accept or entertain that maybe - it’s you.

You are the problem.

SadCarpetMess · 25/05/2025 13:54

Of course you're allowed an opinion but I'm not entirely clear exactly what it's based on other than just being disappointed because you drove to a place where you didn't have to pay extra for entry and parts of it are closed because of winds. YANBU to be disappointed but YABU to think they should keep it all open if they or their insurers take the considered view that it's dangerous.
To avoid disappointment in future, check the weather forecast and contact the place directly if you're in doubt?
