Got an interview, yay, but it's not in person and on teams

I know I'm being unreasonable but love the feedback people give on this site.

I saw a job advertised and I didn't get time to apply last time. It was advertised start of April and readvertised a week ago.

I applied an hour before closing And got an interview offer shortly after.

I know someone who applied for the job last time and they didn't get it but it was advertised in person, in their office. Mine is on teams.

Any ideas why it's on teams?

Also it's £38k job and I'm on £32k so welcome rise.

I'm 42 and single parent.

How do I not fuck it up?

What is the issue with it being on teams? I thought that was quite common these days

Irs a lot easier for people to sneak away for an hour on teams than in person right! I just don't know why they've changed it.

If the interview is on teams it’s a bonus as you can have cue cards behind the screen and are in your own surroundings so you are more relaxed, if the role is wfh you have to be strict with yourself and not wander away to do the laundry!

ureterr1blemuriel · 24/05/2025 12:35

I wouldn’t worry too much about the switch from in-person to teams. It can benefit you - you can stick lots of post it notes around the camera to act as prompts eg your research on the employer, key words about your skills and experience you want to get out. Just make sure the back ground is tidy (ideally with not much going on and no one else is in view). Good luck!

I currently WFH which is grewt but this is 3 days office. The journey is a bitch but I guess do for a few years and move on

Don't overthink it, it could be something as simple as the availability of one of the interview panel. Good luck!

What do you mean? Why do you think they’re going to be getting up in the middle of your teams interview and sneaking off??

GaspingGekko · 24/05/2025 12:37

As PP said, I use teams interviews to have all my notes available for me to glance at should I need to. I've done that before in face to face interviews but it feels a lot less awkward when I can just hide things out of view.

As to why it's changed. There could be any number of reasons why it has changed. Maybe even they've just responded to feedback from previous interviews where people have expressed difficulties in attending face to face. I wouldn't read to much into it myself.

twistyizzy · 24/05/2025 12:38

Last 3 jobs I've got have been via Teams. It's great as you can have your CV + notes open to refer to. For both applicants and recruiters it is time + cost effective

Penthrowingsurvivor · 24/05/2025 12:39

Presumably they changed it because it's easier for them?

What a strange thing to worry about, you have an interview, surely that's all that matters.

Maybe they want to check if the candidate has the right set up to WFH? who knows, that's irrelevant at that stage isn't it?

I presumed OP meant it's easier to fit an hour teams interview into your working day, than to have to leave your place of work to attend face to face.

caramac04 · 24/05/2025 12:40

I waffled on far too much in a teams interview (first experience ever of using Teams)
On screen was the question and in the bottom corner was a tiny pic of one of the panel. It just threw me.
I didn’t get the job; part time role but was asked to reinterview for a full time role and I would be coached prior to interview. I couldn’t commit to full time so declined. I wish I had interviewed better for the part time post.
I struggled with not seeing a person onscreen.

I think she means for the interviewee, they can sneak away from their current job for a teams interview, but going to an in person interview takes up a lot more time.

PeapodMcgee · 24/05/2025 12:47

Maybe the person they recruited was shit / left because the job or culture is horrible / fell through, and they're sick to death of the faff of constant in-person interviews.

Edited

Weird as they had lots of interest on LinkedIn by people qualified for the job. The person wouldn't have started as by the time they did their ntice etc

Lots of interviews done by teams I do it all the time. They might have made an offer to someone previously and they decided not to take it at the last minute. You get your preferred candidate they accept then change their mind. Even day before starting sometimes. Some people just use offers as a way of negotiating pay at their current job. Loads of reasons for it being re-advertised.

werewolftherewolf · 24/05/2025 13:36

Maybe it’s a very busy time of the year for them and only have so many hours spare to interview? Or maybe they have other perfectly valid reasons? Does it matter?

I much prefer Teams interviews. Saves the hassle of driving, finding parking, making sure I am on time, being on my best behaviour at all times (ie waiting at reception) etc. I also personally don’t have a problem with connecting with people over Teams. It’s easier to keep focused, you can have prompts to help you and the interviews are generally short and sweet.

Congratulations on getting your interview. Now go get the job.

mehmehma · 24/05/2025 13:38

At my work, I do an initial interview on Teams and then I narrow it down to final in-person interviews. It might just be a first ‘vetting’ interview.

Alas, with more candidates using AI to fill in application forms, I now have to do this just to check the person is legit.

It might be because one or more of the interviewers is WFH that day.

In the last few years, all the recruitment into my team has been done with online first interviews. It's a much more effective use of time to screen people. Any further stages are face to face.

generalexpert · 24/05/2025 13:46

I hire lots of people. I can’t remember the last time I conducted an in-person interview. Lots easier and cheaper to do by teams. Particularly as the interviewers are possibly WFH.

Yes I wonder if there is a second interview
