Today it feels like autumn or winter. It's about 18C here. My forecast for the next week is pitcured here. Also you can see the seasonal averages for my area.

There's an old expression, Ne'er cast a clout till May is out'.

Meaning don't shed winter clothes until it is June. We've just been exceptionally lucky to have had such a sunny spring!

Our warm weather season in the UK is really very short and out of kilter with the day lengthening. June, July, and then by August the days are already getting shorter again.

But it's not June yet so don't give up hope!

I thought that referred to the may blossom rather than the month of May.

This isn’t talking about the month, it’s talking about may blossom.

A few posters have said that, fair enough I was told wrong, but I've always found it works for the month of May too.

There's a reason for Hawthorn being given the name, after all. Like Cockchafers being called May Bugs.

socks1107 · 25/05/2025 09:08

It’s only May! Plenty of time for us to be moaning about it being too for 2+ days yet

Myblueclematis · 25/05/2025 09:12

We've just had a brief downpour here and the sun is trying to come out. It's windy though and it's going to be windy, some rain and dullish for most of the week ahead. It's not that cold though which is a bonus.

Going to a big wedding next month so have fingers crossed that the weather for that weekend will be fine, sunny and warm, not baking hot, pleasantly warm.

EleanorReally · 25/05/2025 09:14

it is a bank holiday
what do you expect?
last weekend was beautiful, perfect May weather

Chipsahoy · 25/05/2025 09:19

Goodness, what a glass half empty way of looking at life!

Koalafan · 25/05/2025 09:20

It was unusually warm for a bit, now it's a little cooler. That's hardly winter.

nam3c4ang3 · 25/05/2025 09:25

Oh stop it - it’s may and hardly even summer 🙄 - YABU and frankly ridiculous .

TheGreyQuail · 25/05/2025 09:50

To us pagans, summer began may 1st, hence mid summer solstice on june 21st this year so we are well into our summer.
Some peeps will always moan about the weather, sometimes you need to just dress for it and crack on. Climate change is doing all sorts of weird things to the planet and we just have to learn to adapt. Doesn't mean we can't be irritated or upset about it but I think it's better to change things in our way of thinking and look for some positives.
I doubt anyone wants torrential flooding or harsh droughts [ie1976 looking at you]. But we have to get on with it regardless because we can't change it.

Asuitablecat · 25/05/2025 10:00

It keeps raining a bit here, but not enough to actually soak the ground. Istill feel like i need to actually water the plants. It's very windy, so not really very pleasant weather to do anything in.

CombatBarbie · 25/05/2025 10:04

Where I am in SW Scotland it seems the seasons are changing, the last 2/3 yrs has seen glorious weather Apr/may/jun and the actual summer has been grim. Last year especially so over the whole country.

We've just had 3 weeks of 22-27 degrees.....now it's sunny but with lots of heavy showers and I've so many outdoor jobs to do.

No one knows whether the saying is the month or the hawthorn. As a previous poster mentions there's a good reason for that since they both usually occur at the same time. So you aren't necessarily wrong but since the meanings been lost and it's at the same time it's hardly incorrect either way.

Exactly! And as soon as the temperature hits 26-27C, (around 80F!) we will have the 'OMG it's toooooooo HOT! I can't STAND IT. I HATE summer' threads coming in thick and fast!!! With this kind of emoji >>> 😫

Some people just love to moan! 😆

Judellie · 25/05/2025 10:37

I always think it's mad when people say summer doesn't start til 21 June. No, that's midsummer and from then on in the nights begin to shorten again.
May, June and July are when you get the long light nights so that's what I class as summer!
I go by the light rather than the weather, which can be anything!

Gettingbysomehow · 25/05/2025 10:48

It's still only May. In the gardeners year we never plant annuals until mid may because you can't guarantee there wont be a frost before then.

It's always people who habitually go on holiday to places like Greece and the Canaries, too.

Also, it's nearly midday, and so far it's been sunny today, (I've been up since 8am,) and it's 15 degrees C. Going to go up to 17-18 later. It may rain a bit later on, but it's not going to be all day!
