To think it’s wrong some big companies won’t accept cash?

Just seems a bit shit.

I went to the cinema. No cash accepted. Card only.

Annoying. My preference is cash. But, some people use it to budget. Some people have it as their funds available to spend because they’ve been gifted some cash.

Seems really odd not to accept cash or advertise and make it clear on things like ticket confirmations that you don’t accept any cash

You're not being unreasonable at all. I am very worried about what happens when we can no longer use cash.

humptydumptyfelloff · 23/05/2025 21:44

Yep I agree op

i always carry plenty of cash in me because the number of times card machines stop working or software goes down is unreal and these companies really should be accepting legal tender

LlynTegid · 23/05/2025 21:47

I agree.

Though having dealt with cash in transit companies and also the lack of a functioning courts/police/prison service, I can understand why some firms do not want to take cash. Then you have to find a bank if you do not use cash in transit companies.

BallerinaRadio · 23/05/2025 21:50

It's their choice, they can't be forced to take it. I'd it was negatively affecting their business I'm sure they'd change it

Createausername1970 · 23/05/2025 21:50

It's one less bother to deal with.

If they don't take cash they don't have to spend time banking it. Plus there is no cash on the premises, so one less security issue, and easier at end of day, tills don't have to be reconciled and the cash moved to a safe.

But I do understand what you mean. I do use card mostly, but we keep cash in our individual purse/wallets and we have cash in the house - enough to fill the car with fuel and buy a week's shopping. I don't think going completely cash free and relying solely on mobile signal or internet connection in order to make payments is the right thing.

musicalfrog · 23/05/2025 21:52

I thought the govt was going to force companies to accept it. Those which provide essential goods and services anyway.

MidnightPatrol · 23/05/2025 21:52

Doesn’t bother me, but I very, very rarely use cash - so having to pay with it is a massive hassle.

Mum2jenny · 23/05/2025 21:55

I prefer cash as you know when you’ve spent it. I think the places that don’t accept cash may be more likely to try and rip you off wrt to pricing. If I have a choice of cash only or card only, I will choose the cash only option.

Scooby2024 · 23/05/2025 21:58

Tbh I get why it's annoying and o have had it on teh passed where I would have paid cash over card. However I also get why companies don't accept it. It's one less cost/thing they have to deal with. Less insurance as no cash onsite, less chance of theft and with payrolls getting tighter one less job for someone to do,

JustAMum31 · 23/05/2025 21:59

I’m a retail manager and we do accept cash in my shop.

I can speak for larger businesses but certain in terms of small local shops/cafes etc I can completely understand the reluctance to take cash. So many high street banks have closed that trying to actually bank the cash is a nightmare. We have a small chain of shops and there are some branches where staff member responsible for banking is having to drive 30 mins each way to get a bank where they can pay in cash.

This means that just to bank the cash you’re requiring extra staff to cover the shop floor as the person banking is gone for so long. The person banking then claims mileage for the journey.

There’s also obviously the risks of handling cash both in the premises and when taking it to bank.

LoveItaly · 23/05/2025 22:01

Look up plans for CDBC (Central Bank Digital Currencies), which are being developed in many countries. They will have the potential to be programmable, so how, where and when an individual spends them may be decided by government, frightening in my opinion.

I'm not reading it as the OP wants to force anyone to pay cash, simply that the option should be available for those who want to.

ClareBlue · 23/05/2025 22:09

If it means someone is less at risk of being robbed, that it reduces cost for business and reduces theft by employees and reduces grubby money in circulation then it's all good to me.
To have cash you get it from a bank after being paid or receiving your benefits. So why get it out. Of course you can keep track. All banks have a money manager.
Being paid on cash, that's another issue.

mugglewump · 23/05/2025 22:10

For lots of businesses, being card only makes them safer (less likely to be victims of theft) and helps them balance the books.

ilovesooty · 23/05/2025 22:10

A lot of places haven't accepted cash for years. As others have said, it isn't cost effective or convenient for them. I only need cash for one or two very specific things and it's a nuisance trying to find a functioning ATM.

Eh? Because people have things to pay for and might want to just see the physical cash? Maybe they want to get some out and spread it across certain things, need it for school trips, stuff like that

I personally watched a family member escape domestic violence last year. She squirreled away bits of cash for a while before doing so. Someone like that is buggered if the location of funds can be pinpointed and queried

I hate cash, can’t wait for it to be history. Digital payments are faster, cheaper and more secure.

You can’t think of a single good reason for cash?

And the less cash is circulating the less opportunity there is for black market businesses to flourish and avoid paying tax, exploit their workers and use their businesses as fronts for money laundering.

Considering how often online banking goes down, or how often the terminals in supermarkets stop working, it isn't actually that secure. Or faster.

I find cash points don't work more often than online banking.

Companies should have to accept cash, it should be the law.

Employees should also have the right to have their wages paid in cash. This used to be a law until Thatcher abolished it.

I don't see why companies should be constrained by pandering to people who want to use cash. The days of people getting a little brown envelope with their wages in are long gone.

ReplacementBusService · 23/05/2025 22:46

Sod them all. May the cyber devils land in their security system and render them incapable of accepting card payments. Then they will wish they'd accepted more tangible methods of payment. Slaves to Visas imperialist system that they are.

I’ve started back using cash because of budgeting like you said. Hate the idea of only using tapping!
