To think driving 10mph is too slow?

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/05/16/speed-limits-should-be-cut-to-10mph/

per the above article, there wil be “less deaths if we drive at 10mph”. No sh*t! There will be less deaths if we stop using cars and go back to horse and cart. This is the reversal of progress. Maybe the invention of the wheel was too dangerous!
There are already too many 20mph roads , even dual carriageways in non residential areas. It’s too slow! You can’t get anywhere. London has gotten ridiculous!

Absurd. It should be higher. Modern cars are more than equipped to deal with going over 70mph

Shame modern bodies aren't equipped to being hit by cars at 30+ mph.

Aren't the speed limits put on signs for everyone to see, a bit like traffic lights? Why so hard to obey?

20 is very slow, it’s easy to creep above. I’ve worked out how to use the speed limit on the car as a result of realising how significant the difference is.

Just use the brake more, drive better

randoname · 21/05/2025 18:18

@Redpeach so you drive? “Using the brake more” isn’t good driving.

Edited

It is, if it stops you breaking the speed limit, because its 'too hard' to slow down

A friend of mine got a speeding ticket. She was in her 20s and very attractive. She said she batted her eyes at the police officer and said she just didn't realise she was going too fast. His advice was look at that dial and the big hand will tell you how fast you're going. She was disappointed she didn't get away with it but loved his answer.

I don’t think cyclists have to abide by speed limits.

In general, no - cyclists are not legally bound by most speed limits on a national basis
However bylaws can and are put in place on a local basis

Otherwise there are additional offences that can apply

In the ‘good old days’ eyelid batting was not necessarily required for a police stop.

The hi vis traffic officer with a radar gun waving for drivers to stop was often a precursor to a quick stop to check over the driver, make sure you didn’t smell of alcohol, your car didn’t have bald tyres etc and driver attitude.
A pleasantly handled stop, of a few MPH over would result in “Don’t let me catch you here tomorrow” in the full knowledge that they would be somewhere else tommorow

I am literally going to get a horse & cart to transport the family. Cheaper than a car and greener 😄

You’ve never owned a horse have you?

cheaper 😂😂😂😂

Not sure when the good old days were exactly. This was the early 80s.

I had a manager who had a long commute to a job with antisocial hours. One night/morning he got stopped for speeding on the motorway. The officer asked him, "what speed did you think you were going?"

Manager opted for truth and said, "about 85".

The officer was so surprised that the manager owned up to what speed he was going, that he didn't give him a ticket. This was in 2006 though.

Pre-abundance of speed cameras, for me that would have been the late 80s / early 90s

Theunamedcat · 21/05/2025 19:52

It will damage cars

Maybe an electric car can take doing that speed consistently but not everyone can afford one insurance rates are higher on them and we don't have the infrastructure to support them

Fluffypussycat · 21/05/2025 19:58

I see it’s sensible putting 20 zones where there are schools. What is the point of 20 zones in town centres? My cynicism tells me it’s to pander to those plonkers who want to cross the road without looking for traffic, or staring at their phones,

It was definitely earlier than that, 1982 I think. 5 foot 10 models weren't a common sight where I lived and she definitely thought she was going to get away with it. Fair dos though she did laugh at herself.

What mocking brag?

I don’t have a horse, much as I would love to, because it’s so fucking expensive!!

cars are much cheaper. And far easier to dispose of when they break down 😢

The cars might be, but there's a human at the wheel and a lot of them are idiots.
