https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/05/16/speed-limits-should-be-cut-to-10mph/

per the above article, there wil be “less deaths if we drive at 10mph”. No sh*t! There will be less deaths if we stop using cars and go back to horse and cart. This is the reversal of progress. Maybe the invention of the wheel was too dangerous!
There are already too many 20mph roads , even dual carriageways in non residential areas. It’s too slow! You can’t get anywhere. London has gotten ridiculous!

Pedestrianised area in a town nr me BUT has an access to a car park and deliveries, vehicle speed limit is 10mph.... maybe those against low limits in these sorts of areas would think differently if they got hit at 30mph in a car park... might knock some sense in to them.. probably not!

We live in a culture where Car is King! nothing should be done to stop drivers doing as they will or the cry is "War on Motorists!"

CeaselesslyIntoThePast · 21/05/2025 14:15

I do not agree with 10mph, but I do think National Speed Limit should be reduced to 50mph for all vehicles. And 60mph on motorways.

I disagree.
The cyclists are king. They can go on any path, bridleway, pavement or pedestrianised shopping area they wish as well as roads and expect folk to jump out of the way.
Got to Birmingham city centre if you disagree. Also Birmingham tow paths - yes the tourist guide say about lovely canal side walks but imo they are only for people with excellent hearing and physical agility to hear and avoid the cyclists.
Also, pedestrian lights and zebra crossings don't apply to them - person knocked over and significantly injured near me recently - crossing when all the cars had stopped but knocked down by a cyclist.

I realise it is not all cyclists of course

The figures say differently, do children play outside like say 40 or 50 years ago? nope, too many cars.... can children walk to school safely in many areas? nope too many cars.....

Around 100 cyclists killed each year by vehicles, that will include a number of children.

Drivers kill approx 1800 per year, inc approx 300 children, imagine your child? or partner? friend?

Yes there are plenty of stupid cyclists but the bicycle rider will always come off worse when involved in a collision with a 1 ton plus vehicle.

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 21/05/2025 14:51

Just when you think you've seen every kind of stupid, up pops an article in the Telegraph.😂

What speed would you put on country lanes?

Excellent question

One road, you’re almost lucky.
Our entire Greater London Town is now completely 20 mph for about a 25 min radius in most directions! Apart from the big A roads.

going anywhere is slow and most roads have cameras.

They even changed the local by pass and dual carriage way (x2) from 40 to 30 and from 2 lanes down to 1 lane. Everything to make driving harder

Yep! There’s a dual carriageway , non residential area in SW London that’s 20mph. I’m sure there are more

Its a typical Telegraph article . Basically it has made it up as no-one is calling for a 10mph limit. This is just to get your grandad angry

agreed but there is a real problem of 20mph zones in places that don’t need it. Ie dual carriageways in non residential areas

They should though, this morning the papers are reporting two people killed by cyclists. Enough is enough! When is the government going to do something about dangerous and killer cyclists!

Sick of cyclists running red lights & even cycling wrong side of road ( to cut short a corner at a junction) . Also cyclists speeding along pavements or on roads speeding like it’s Tour de France

So why didn't you start a thread about that? You just read the headline and got angry didn't you.

Whereas drivers of course are well known for never jumping red lights, never cutting corners, and never exceeding the speed limit!

Absurd. It should be higher. Modern cars are more than equipped to deal with going over 70mph

That doesn’t mean all speed limits should be calibrated to the absolute minimum stopping distance.

PinkGardenParty · 21/05/2025 16:27

Alexandra2001 · 21/05/2025 08:24

Get a bike if you re jealous?

Bicycles are not subject to speed limits as they have no means to know what their speed is....

However, they can be fined for other offences if they speed, maybe focus on the millions of motorists who do have a calibrated speedometer but cannot control the left foot & who kill 1800people each years, including 300 children..... I

Imagine anything else that wiped out 2 or 3 primary schools each year.. yet no one cares....

10mph speed is ridiculous and is never going to happen... bin it along with other Tory 'press scare stories...

My bike has a speedo.

Typical motorist comment.. in fact your original & subsequent posts is one of entitlement.... "i don't want drive at X speed limit, as i'm the perfect driver, its always someone else's fault"

This time its cyclists, next week it'll be lorry drivers, mums with prams, horse riders... in fact any one who dares slow you down for even a nano second!

You seek out non stories and present them as fact....

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/05/2025 16:48

Bring back the man (or woman) with the red flag 🚩 to walk in front of vehicles, I say.

It would have the added advantage of reducing unemployment and boost the sales of red flags, which, by a bizarre twist of fate have been 'flagging' recently! 🤣

Oh give over, there are far too many cars on the road, that's the problem. Reduce car use, reduce speed limits, motor vehicles cause nearly all the accidents.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 20/05/2025 20:07

Yes it’s insane- we have one road near us that changes from 30 to 20mph simply because half of it falls under a different council. Me and many of my friends have had clean licences for 20+ years, 20mph zones come in and bam we all get done. I had to do a speed awareness course for 24’mph. It’s a money making scam end of.

I had to do a course for exactly the same. But it was useful- he specifically explained the difference in stopping distance at impact at 24mph.
Still annoying and expensive though.

Aren't the speed limits put on signs for everyone to see, a bit like traffic lights? Why so hard to obey?

How does the momentum increase above 70mph?
What about the change in momentum - the impact force? The thing that kills you

How does that change?

London is very easy to get around by bike or public transport, i hear - so not 'ridiculous' for the majority of people who don't drive. Driving is most definitely discouraged.

Headingtowardsdivorce · 21/05/2025 17:20

I'd be up for driving at 10mph near schools etc. I love the 20mph through our village, it's made walking around it much nicer.

Anyone who finds it difficult to drive that slowly shouldn't be driving as far as I'm concerned. It's so basic.

Have you ever seen a child hit at 30 mph. Not something I ever want to see again.
