Vaccination against cervical cancer/HPV

nooshoo · 19/05/2025 09:32

This vaccination protects against a sexually transmitted virus which can lead to cancer and other problems. Does anyone know why is it recommended as standard for children from 11 years, is it because there is perceived realistic risk of sexual contact occuring from this age?

Your post doesn't answer the question though. Which was why the age was set at 11.

Because they want to ensure all children get it before they have sex to it's effective. It's a double jab too IIRC.

From the data we have 22% of teenagers are sexually active by 14, around 5% are sexually active at 13.

It is best to give the vaccine before becoming sexually active.

11 is younger than 13, when only 5% of the age group is likely to be sexually active. So by giving it younger the vaccine has a better chance of being effective.

How is this hard for you to understand.

Most of your post was fine. The last line was very rude and unnecessary.

Don't share your wisdom if you can't do so without telling the person you are sharing with how stupid they are. Just don't write anything at all.

I think is more common sense. Having to talk at primary school about HPV is going to be more difficult than when they are that bit older and settled into high school, puberty is not as secretive, uncomfortable or something to snigger at in the playground anymore as they are starting to develop and experience it ( I know girls start periods earlier) and it’s an easier conversation to have, plus the kids understand why they need it. Its thought that most are not sexually active at this age, but old enough to understand it all

Is it perceived that most children are sexually active from 11? Genuine question!

No! It is the age BEFORE they become sexually active. I don't understand why you can't seem to get this. Not most. A small percentage may become sexually active at 12.

MatildaMovesMountains · 19/05/2025 09:58

You're the one who is obsessed with the idea of 11-year-olds having sex 👀

V rude coming from someone with an unhealthy interest in children having sex.

What is your agenda here, OP?

Of course not. The vast vast majority aren't. Why is this hard for you to understand?

@nooshoo I am happy to be rude to anyone who stirs up vaccine uncertainty and is seemingly unable to use search engines.

Feel free to hide behind wide eyed "I just didn't know" though.

reesespieces123 · 19/05/2025 10:01

@nooshoo I don't know where you get 11 from. It's given in y8 to kids who are 12 or 13.

Annoyeddd · 19/05/2025 10:01

nooshoo · 19/05/2025 09:54

It also protects against mouth cancers from HPV too, I think.

And some anal cancers.

If we vaccinate year 8 boys and girls then there is a degree of protection for all whether they are gay or straight as adults (or some combination)

nooshoo · 19/05/2025 10:02

Okay, I will adapt my wording as a few posters are getting confused by it - 11 is seen as the age JUST BEFORE children are going to start being sexually active? Except stats shown above indicated that around 20 percent of 14 year olds are sexually active. So recommending vacc for most children at 11 is still slightly odd. Although there is a second jab given, presumably in fact more jabs are going to be needed throughout life, it isn't 2 jabs cover for life?

OK I'm going to ask you directly: Are you 1) antivax or 2) interested in sex with children? Or a bit of both?

This is it. Most people I knew started having sex at university. I am not kidding! There are a few people in dc's class who say they have had sex - and there have been no initiatives to try to stop that. I think more and better initiatives to stop young teens have sex are as necessary as creating vaccines.

its about wiping out the virus.
some children won’t be able to have it some won’t have it. Chuck in the 20% you’ve missed and that’s a big percentage still capable of carrying, transmitting and contracting.

HairsprayBabe · 19/05/2025 10:06

Where are you getting 11 from> The HPV vaccine is given in year 8 when children are 12 and13.

22% of them will likely be sexually active by 14 so the timing of the vaccine makes total sense.

What is your actual problem here?
