Is it healthier to be 2 stone overweight or drink half a bottle of wine a day?

Just seeking some views here and it’s a bit controversial so I opted for AIBU. Obviously neither is ideal but from a health perspective, what do you think?

Not unreasonable: Half a bottle of wine is worse.
Unreasonable: 2 stone overweight is worse.

Really interested to hear some views.

Thanks.

It’s all relative though isn’t it.

An obese person who smokes and drinks may live till 80 with no real medical issues and a teetotal marathon runner can get terminal cancer at 40.

Sometimes lifestyle factors aren’t enough.

This gives me hope 😂

It depends what you want to die of.

Then wouldn't you have a food addiction?

2 stone? Maybe, maybe just a case of eating rubbish. " 2 stone isn't colossal. Like I said, I would prefer to be 2 stone overweight and that is coming from someone who used to drink wine every night and pretend that it was normal.

JohnTheRevelator · 19/05/2025 17:15

As bad as each other I'd say. I suppose I'd rather be 2 stone overweight than bordering on being an alcoholic.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 19/05/2025 17:20

I'm 2 stone overweight, I don't look great but I genuinely wouldn't consider it to be a health issue. Maybe I'm being naive. I'm healthy and reasonably fit I'm just a bit too fat.

WildflowerConstellations · 19/05/2025 17:23

Overweight is better. You could still be quite healthy while a bit overweight which is much better than poisoning yourself on the daily.

Princessfluffy · 19/05/2025 17:25

The alcohol I imagine is worse for your health

Mum2jenny · 19/05/2025 17:32

Difficult choices. My dh is v overweight and barely drinks and has many health concerns. I’m standard weight and drink too much wine, but have no health concerns. We both eat healthily, so I think it may be up to genetics.

WayneEyre · 19/05/2025 18:05

No judgement but that Is a lot of booze daily, it's no comparison. It's just not a big enough gap compared to the weight issue. A lot people who are active and eat well sit over their BMI limit.

It's honestly much better than that consistent level of drinking. If the question was 'what about 5st over(say)' that may be different.

Plus overweight over what period and drinking over what period will be a factor. Lifelong obesity ls a different issue to being a bit of a party animal in one's youth and toning it down.

Edited

2 stone can easily go to 3 then 4, and then 6. You might as well say you've replaced one addiction for another. If I was to give my honest opinion I would rather not be 2 stone over weight or drink every night because both food and drink can shorten your life when you abuse them.

The alcohol will lead to.weight.gain but also the not being present for your loved ones; making bad choices due to being slightly inebriated, not being able to drive etc
It might be that someone who regularly drives half a bottle.of wine a night functions fine but I know I wouldn't be able to

Alliod40 · 19/05/2025 20:22

If you have to have 2/3 glasses of wine a day you're an alcoholic in fairness,so you need help with that first then you'll start losing weight.. if you think you've not got a drink problem that's your first worry there,if anyone says any different they've also got a drink problem

GrumpyCowMummy · 19/05/2025 20:31

Ok. Both is less than ideal, but the wine is ongoing stress on the liver and kidneys. Not to mention interference with hormones ect. The weight is wearing and tear on the joints, extra stress on the heart and other bodily functions. However I would say the wine is probably the worse, and the easiest thing to stop.

Is being 2 stone overweight normal?

OkimADHD · 19/05/2025 20:53

I would say the alcohol imo

Not silly at all.

It is silly because it will depend on the individual. They'll already have a genetic make up with specific risk factors so you cannot compare them with another individual.

Plus you could have someone who classes as overweight due to large muscle mass. Or someone who is two stones overweight but active as opposed to two stone overweight and sedentary. What about if someone who drinks half a bottle of wine is a very healthy eater, but another person lives off takeaway?

You simply can't compare and that's obvious. So obvious in fact, that this is very clearly a judgy post, intended to fat shame.

I'm probably in a unique position to "answer" this. I was severely underweight and drank every day. My mental health was appalling, I became dependent on the drink, not an alcoholic, but it was an every day thing. My teeth suffered, I always had a headache, and it made my mental health worse because its a depressant.
However, now I'm T total and overweight, just had 2 babies in 2 years and youngest is 8 weeks. I've never felt better. Even though I'm overweight, I feel amazing, I don't need a drink, I don't want one, I can enjoy my evenings without a glass of wine. My headache has gone, and I'm now an early riser. I think people use drink as a clutch, first sign of stress - glass of wine, long day at work - bottle of beer, hard time with the kids - G&T. You get the picture. Now I have learnt better coping strategies and think my patience and stress levels overall are so much better than when I was drinking. Yes I'm a little overweight but I'm fit, healthy, strong, and proud of my body.

I love that you used better coping strategies & feel good. Was it difficult to give up the alcohol?

SapporoBaby · 19/05/2025 21:12

I’d say the alcohol is worse because alcohol doesn’t just have effects on the body it also messes up your mind and moods. Being a touch fat pales in comparison.

Donewiththisshit · 19/05/2025 14:17

There is actually a fair bit of evidence about this. The WHO outlines 5 reversible causes of chronic disease and cancer - of which alcohol and obesity are 2.
Obesity is generally considered worse for health than alcohol.
www.rand.org/pubs/research_briefs/RB4549.html

Being overweight is not the same as obesity, however. And most of the damages of obesity occur at BMIs over 35.

WayneEyre · 20/05/2025 08:13

What does 2st overweight actually mean, 2st above the highest healthy BMI measurement? That would vary with height and build re how much of an effect it would have. If one of 5'7" they would I think be 92kg or 14.5st. that's quite high but you could maintain that on a balanced but calorific diet and exercise and be ok. I've seen a lot of patients who are genuinely fit, well and steady at about that weight (not my job to manage weight btw).

It would be better to express it as a percentage overweight. 35 units is a lot whomever's liver is processing it. Yes some people are bigger but not over twice the recommended units bigger.

YehRight · 20/05/2025 08:19

I defo remember all the articles a few years back about how studies had shown that slim smokers were healthier than fat people. Not sure how true they were or whether this would still be the case after a few decades.

Motheroffive999 · 19/05/2025 20:04

They are the same

They’re not. Being overweight won’t damage your liver or your brain. I know which I’d choose.
