Is it healthier to be 2 stone overweight or drink half a bottle of wine a day?

Just seeking some views here and it’s a bit controversial so I opted for AIBU. Obviously neither is ideal but from a health perspective, what do you think?

Not unreasonable: Half a bottle of wine is worse.
Unreasonable: 2 stone overweight is worse.

Really interested to hear some views.

Thanks.

Half a bottle of wine…..just a small drink every day in my world!! Many of my work colleagues drink much much more, and I do drink less than my GP, so all is good!

@Gwenhwyfar
Experience!
And also, alcohol is one of the most addictive drugs in existence. Like all drugs it starts by releasing dopamine and making us feel lovely. And, like all drugs, prolonged intake causes the brain to adapt meaning more alcohol is required to create the same feelings. So half a bottle of wine a day will invariably lead to a bottle a day. It's how addiction works.
And half a bottle of wine a day adds up to 34 units a week- over twice the recommended intake for women... So not really recommended. And just to clarify, half a bottle of wine a day isn't moderate drinking... that would be no more than a glass a night... or less.

Although i know elderly people who have a glass or more of wine every day and that amount hasn't increased over the years, so maybe it doesn't 'invariably lead to a bottle a day'

@Gwenhwyfar well whoopie doo for them! If they have a couple of glasses a night and have no side effects then great! I'm not judging anyone.
Not sure why you're so defensive about it. Stats show that alcohol intake escalates when consumed regularly. We know so much more about the damage alcohol can cause now. Plus in days gone by the wine had kess alcohol in it. Modern wine is much stronger than it was in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

"Experience!"

Well, that's not a reference.

"half a bottle of wine a day will invariably lead to a bottle a day. It's how addiction works."

Someone who has half a bottle of wine is not necessarily an addict.
I agree that it's not healthy, but it doesn't mean the person is an alcoholic and will inevitable drink more.
