To put this note on the neighbours door

So I live in a street that is basically all student house shares (myself included). One house has left bin bags outside their door (as opposed to in the bin down the street) and they’ve burst so rubbish is EVERYWHERE. I was woken up at 6 after a stressful exam by 20 seagulls on our street and I’m worried we’re going to get rats. Would I be unreasonable to stick this note to their door (I’d post it but I know most people here don’t look at their mail). This is kind of the final straw for me after multiple parties and a street FULL of rubbish is the final straw!

Just report it to the council. A passive aggressive note they’ll howl with laughter at is a waste of time and effort.

Yes do this! The May respond with throwing eggs etc. The council will sort them out.

I take everyone’s point. That was more of a vent and I will reword and make less aggressive. I’m running on about 2 hours sleep because of them and it’s very much straw that broke the camels back.

Understandable. Just be safe, I'd hate for them to start intimidating you. Anonymous report is better.

I hope it improves and you get sleep. Good luck on your exam results

Report: Council, Landlord and Student Housing at Collecge or University.

What can the landlord or student housing do about it? Just the council will do fine.

User79853257976 · 17/05/2025 12:10

At least use a question mark on the question.

Cursory · 17/05/2025 12:13

You should have written it in purple with some illustrations of seagulls and litter around the edge for full impact.

Pbjsand · 17/05/2025 12:16

Write in normal writing with black/blue biro. “Please clean up your rubbish which is strewn over the street as it is attracting vermin. If not done, I will have no choice but to report to xx with video evidence (fine £x)

JosephGeorge · 17/05/2025 12:17

Just report to the council, no notes needed.

PaperBlinds · 17/05/2025 12:17

@BIossomtoes Most contracts require a certain level of behaviour and care in relation to the property and can put pressure on tennants to do that, or they are in breach of contract. Landlords will have a relationship with Student Housing (sometimes). Landlords don't want rats or risk of in their property. Council can only do so much.

AgnesX · 17/05/2025 12:18

People don't like being told what to do much less nagged. I'd sneer at that prissy note and promptly ignore it (and I'm not anywhere near that age).

If you really can't bear to speak to them just go to the council and/or the landlord.

PS saw the update post posting

EmeraldShamrock000 · 17/05/2025 12:18

It is ballsy.
I am not sure if I would do it. They deserve the notice if they have ignored the rubbish and likely to keep doing it.
Yanbu.

chattyness · 17/05/2025 12:22

Just go to the council, if they are happy to leave their rubbish like that, they won't give a fig about a note, it's more likely to make them worse

I’d have thought prosecution and a fine would exceed anything a landlord and student housing could achieve.

GeorgianaM · 17/05/2025 12:27

No one pays any attention to notes! If anything it causes retaliation.

either knock on the door and speak to the occupants or report them behind their back.

ilovesooty · 17/05/2025 12:27

Just take someone with you if you're too afraid to have a conversation. If that's impossible for you (have they ever actually been aggressive to you?) just report to the council. Leave the ridiculous anonymous note out of it.

CosyLemur · 17/05/2025 20:11

It's student accommodation and you didn't expect parties 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Please read updates. I have written a new note but won’t be knocking because they’re scary. Thank you

Scary? They're students! What are you 12? Honestly if this isn't your final year I suggest you need to find a uni closer to home and live with your mummy and daddy because you're clearly not mature enough to live away from home on your own!

CosyLemur · 17/05/2025 20:15

FamBae · 17/05/2025 10:32

I would be contacting Environmental Health and their Landlord, and if you don't know the landlord can you remember which estate agent they used, they may be able to provide you with contact details.

Environmental health would be questioning why houses that pay council tax don't have their own bins and have to carry them down the road!

Emmz1510 · 17/05/2025 20:18

You are not exactly being unreasonable, just a bit heavy handed maybe. I wouldn’t go straight from 0 to 100 on this. Start with

Hi, would you mind clearing up the rubbish outside your house? It’s attracting seagulls and I’m worried rats will be next! Thanks

Give them till tomorrow. Then go in with a firmer note and then report if still nothing.

That’s a bit nasty. Not all students meet the stereotype in your head you know.

User450877 · 17/05/2025 20:25

Contact the council, and possibly the landlord - they aren’t going to go out and bag it up, you’re wasting more time and energy than you need to on a minor nuisance. If you report it to the council as a hazard, it’s not impossible it’ll get cleared up. Whereas, v unlikely they will…

BobbyBiscuits · 17/05/2025 20:28

They won't clean up split bin bags attacked by vermin simply because you write a note. They'll no doubt ignore it and if they find out it's you could mock you or be aggressive.
Just tell the council. No point writing threats to do so. Just do it.

What a nasty response. I can imagine some male students could be large and/or intimidating. Do you feel good having written that?

HeathHealing · 17/05/2025 20:33

OP, just rewrite a normal short and polite note. And report.

I like your handwriting btw. V neat!!

crazeekat · 17/05/2025 21:00

Ur note is the least they deserve. Sure everyone would be happy to have rats and mice than upset the poor wee students.
