to ask what movie I should watch tonight

MrsMattSantos · 16/05/2025 16:08

posting here for traffic, and to try to get a broader range of suggestions.
But both DH and DD are out tonight so I have the house to myself, which never happens!
looking for suggestions for a movie to watch - so what have you seen recently that’s been good?
I have Sky, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Disney and Apple to choose from (yes, our bill for streaming services is😱)

OP posts:

Better Man (the Robbie Williams film - it's brill!)

HardbackPaperback · 16/05/2025 17:43

Corsage, Tár, or A Real Pain.

ItGhoul · 16/05/2025 17:44

Conclave.

Rina66 · 16/05/2025 18:03

A Simple Favour

madnessitellyou · 16/05/2025 18:05

Another vote for Conclave. And The Two Popes. Absolutely charming film.

madnessitellyou · 16/05/2025 18:06

Oh yes and Tár!

Goingawayistricky · 16/05/2025 18:12

What do you like?

This week I watched The Mother. British film with Daniel Craig. A grandmother loses her husband and goes to stay with her son. Ends up shagging sons builder! Very different. Possibly slightly too graphic but good.

Lunana - A Yak in the Classroom. Fabulous cheery film set in a remote Bhutan village.

A sci go film Annihilation about a weird dome and what’s under it. Something original as it happens.

All Prime.

I’ve always vaguely meant to watch The Mother, as everyone praises the two leads, and I really like Anne Reid, but am I wrong in thinking there’s a graphic rape and some violence?

The rape is an equally older man forcing himself on the Anne Reid character. It’s not particularly graphic aside from his face/ noises. It’s probably more “grim” because you don’t see old people have sex let alone force themselves on others. .
The guy that wrote it used to write porn films and I think it shows in places.
However it was an interesting watch for lots of reasons. Especially since the “hunky hero” turns out to be a complete waster.

A simple favour and another simple favour 👌

Maybe I should give it a go. I thought it was written by Hanif Kureishi! And directed by Roger ‘Notting Hill’ Michell?

Stripyzebrabra · 16/05/2025 18:51

Fight or Flight

Or since you have netflix Four Seasons is really good if you fancy a series binge

FanofLeaves · 16/05/2025 18:53

I watched Speak no Evil the other day, it really got under my skin! No one does quiet menace quite like James Mcavoy, (even when he played Mr Tummus 🤣) he was superb in this.

it’s a remake of a very dark Danish film but this is more psychological thriller, it’s a slow burn at first but the dialogue is great and it’s a very compelling watch.

Hanif Kureishi apparently started in porn. Although that’s Wikipedia so maybe I’m wrong.
There is a feel of masculine enjoyment of sex running through it. Although perhaps my lack of HRT is showing 😁

Agree. I dwelled on this for a while after viewing it.

I watched that on a flight recently, I enjoyed it.

Neveranynamesleft · 16/05/2025 19:11

Try a classic old one such as Long Good Friday, Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren.

Sillybillypoopoomummy · 16/05/2025 19:12

Conclave, Stardust, Children of Men,The Shape of Water, Dune Pt1, Pride & Predujice (the Keira Knightley one), all of the Slow Horses series

Netcam · 16/05/2025 19:13

YellowOrangePink · 16/05/2025 19:06

Children of Men

Second this and Lunana - A Yak in the Classroom that OP suggested.

Chasingsquirrels · 16/05/2025 19:15

We enjoyed The Young Woman and the Sea recently, Disney+.
About the first woman to swim the Channel.

Screamingabdabz · 16/05/2025 19:26

Not Conclave. It was a dud and nothing happens. Watch ‘The Leftovers’ which is a brilliant film.

ImRonBurgandy · 16/05/2025 19:29

A Real Pain

Did he? I hosted him for a student event a million years ago and thought he was a wanker, and as I was about 20, I can’t blame HRT! All right, now I have to watch it.
