AIBU to think going to an RG university means absolutely nothing

Never one to shy away from a challenge (even if it's a challenge to someone else). Easter Grin

So I went to a RG uni. I didn't even KNOW I'd been to a RG uni until about 15 years after the fact when I joined MN.

Thereafter I referred to it as having gone to a 'Russell Grant' university (bit confused).

AIBU in thinking RG unis are not the be all and end all?

@R3s3t Liverpool is RG. Also you seem to not understand that most people refer to the university group as RG Plus now. Everyone bar a few, seem to realise Bath, Lancaster, Loughborough, StA and Surrey are equivalent to RG - except they are not members of that group. They might as well be in terms of quality. There’s no difference between them and plenty who are RG. It’s utterly splitting hairs not to see this and keep arguing Lancaster is not “elite”. It is. Just not as elite as Oxbridge or LSE!

The universities requiring a low tariff to get in are unlikely to produce many dc earning mega bucks. Some will of course but overall, not likely. Part of this is because these universities serve a local market. The local market for grads isn’t London in many cases. The students are not applying for high earning jobs in London either. That’s their choice and they are happy.

Well aware Liverpool is RG hence the ridiculousness of some of these comments. The “quality” you insist on is just an out dated self appointed group with several unis not in the self appointed group being better than some in the group. The “ group” itself is pointless, it’s just a self appointed title and pure snobbery.

Youngsters should ignore it and look at all the criteria that matter to them on an individual basis.

I’ve already been over the figures
They clearly show RGs way down the League tables from Lancaster but scoring £ the same or more.
Only one had a wage average lower which was as I said clearly not doing well in maths ( 1 subject btw! ) and as I said clearly Maths clearly isn’t their thing.
Not all Unis are top top in all subjects obviously but RGs still do better in terms of salaries and employability ( as others have evidenced )

Ive crunched these figures for other Unis and other courses. The results are always the same. The RGs overal do better along with the usuals like St Andrews.

I don’t know why you refuse to accept facts and the experiences of others. It is what it is.
Im done

You have not scrutinised every course in every subject in all 24 RG unis over many years.

There are 24 variable unis with hoards of courses and subjects- you don’t automatically get paid more just because your degree is from one of these. It’s a self appointed group and there are far more variables involved.

Loads of young people have no interest in working g in London, and there is nothing wrong with that.

It has loads going for it in terms of what it can provide socially, culturally and public transport-wise, but for many the negatives - cost of living, dirt, noise and crowds is enough to put a lot of peple off.

DD has spent a lot of time in London recently, and every time she visits she dislikes it more. She prefers smaller cities.

My children all went to RG unis - not for that reason but for the quality of the courses. And they have all found it beneficial.

Toptops · 14/05/2025 21:28

Haha, just found out I went to a RG uni decades ago!

Daisy12Maisie · 14/05/2025 21:32

I don’t think it matters. I went to Cardiff as I liked the look of the vodka and red bull bar.
My son is desperate to do a particular course that is very hard to get into so he will apply and go wherever he can get in.
My brother went to Coventry, which I don’t think is known for being one of the best unis (correct me if I’m wrong). He was earning 100 grand, got made redundant and is now earning “a lot more” than that so I don’t think his employees are judging or care where he went to uni.

Its not just salary but employability. In my career a non RG uni CV would be bottom of the pile in most cases. And RG means 'research intensive uni'.

What career is this?

@R3s3t That really is complete rubbish. It’s even more rubbish for degrees with a poor fiscal return like English and other arts degrees. It’s 100% obvious that Derby isn’t Durham. Only a fool thinks there are offering the same life chances to DC. Obviously universities have good courses but they are not, and cannot, be first class when the tariff is CCC or lower. My local university is ranked in the bottom 10. How can that possibly be the same as UCL 30 miles away? It’s completely different and obviously inferior.

I hope to God we don’t have people like you advising the brightest and best dc. Otherwise most will be seriously underachieving.
