What would you think if an overweight person worked in a health & beauty clinic?

I've found the perfect role in terms of hours that can work around the DC, pay and experience, but I'm overweight and it's for a health & beauty clinic. Would I be mad to apply? Would they hire someone who's overweight, non-glamerous and not young, but who's otherwise ideal for the role? What would you think if they had overweight staff in a clinic like this?

YABU- they won't hire someone who's nearing middle age and overweight.

YANBU- go for it! They wouldn't mind.

I wouldn't think anything of it tbh! What sort of clinic is it? Medical or just like a salon?

TheHouseofGirth · 13/05/2025 18:46

What would your role be? I wouldnt take advice from an overweight personal trainer but otherwise, I don't care.

ShortyShorts · 13/05/2025 18:47

We don't know whether they'd hire you 🤷‍♂️

How did you get your experience and how long ago did you previously work in the role?

Dontletthebedbugsbite2 · 13/05/2025 18:47

I think beauty clinics aim to be inclusive, they want to welcome everyone. I feel sad for you that this is even a thought in your head. Go for it!

Rodneynotdave · 13/05/2025 18:48

Wouldn't bother me at all. I'd be more concerned if you had terrible eyebrows and were about to work on mine 😆

WhiteRosesAndThistles · 13/05/2025 18:48

I'm not sure, if it's beauty related you are expected to 'sell' the products.
Most people working in salons near me are a healthy weight and well put together.

Mashbutterfly · 13/05/2025 18:50

Depends on the role. To be honest if it's about diet and lifestyle it's not a good look.

Age doesn't need to be an issue.

You might need to have a tidy hair cut abd nails and look half presentable if it's a beauty salon.

I don't know if it would even put me off a personal trainer tbh. Even if my goal was to lose weight I wouldn't think they couldn't tell me what to do just because they weren't slim/buff.

I know a lot of doctors due to about half my family being doctors, nurses or pharmacists and some of the doctors have the absolute worst lifestyles and never eat veg, smoke etc. I still would listen to their medical advice over the advice of someone with a very healthy lifestyle who didn't have a medical degree

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 13/05/2025 18:51

Being honest, I would expect a certain degree of effort with presentation from front facing staff at that sort of place but that doesn't mean 'young and slim'. I'd expect hair and nails done (manicured and tidy).

GoodCharl · 13/05/2025 18:51

Not everyone is young, glam and a size 10! Everyone has their own insecurities. Tbh id welcome it. To have a variety of different people/looks and be inclusive to make the customer feel comfortable

S0j0urn4r · 13/05/2025 18:51

If you're qualified then apply. They should hire the most qualified.

CopperWhite · 13/05/2025 18:51

It depends on the type of place it is. In my experience, there is an expectation in the beauty industry that women will wear make up, but middle aged and overweight isn’t an issue.

Grin it's front of house, so reception and booking!

Sorry i clicked on yabu , i meant it to mean you are being unreasonable to not apply for the job !
you should absolutely go for it !
wouldn't matter one jot to me , good luck !

TheHouseofGirth · 13/05/2025 18:53

Then I would find your size or looks irrelevant. As long as you were polite and friendly.

I wouldn’t have thought weight or age would be a problem. They will probably expect someone interested in health/beauty so make up, good eyebrows, nice hair though.

Couldn't I possibly say I'm doing the Pamela look? How 'in' is that?

I wouldn’t think anything of it.

Good luck!

Turfaccountant · 13/05/2025 18:56

Voted the wrong way accidentally. Many of us who go to beauticians are most definitely not young or slim, I'd feel so much more comfortable with a woman who understood that we can't all be, or want to be Kim Kardashian.

I don't even own a hairdryer...feel very foolish even considering it now.

The thing is, that sort of work can be learned on the job so they really will have the pick of the crop so to speak.

But applying will cost you nothing so why overthink it?

It doesn't matter what anyone here thinks as we don't own the salon and we can't see what you look like.

Just go for it and best of luck! 🤞☘

GreyCarpet · 13/05/2025 18:58

I'd be looking for clean and well presented with a friendly disposition in a receptionist I interacted with.

I wouldn't care about size or whether they were glamorous.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 13/05/2025 18:58

I wouldn't give it a single thought!!

doodahdayy · 13/05/2025 18:58

I’d expect someone to look smart and polished but being overweight is very normal in the uk. Wouldn’t bat an eyelid
