What would you think if an overweight person worked in a health & beauty clinic?

I've found the perfect role in terms of hours that can work around the DC, pay and experience, but I'm overweight and it's for a health & beauty clinic. Would I be mad to apply? Would they hire someone who's overweight, non-glamerous and not young, but who's otherwise ideal for the role? What would you think if they had overweight staff in a clinic like this?

YABU- they won't hire someone who's nearing middle age and overweight.

YANBU- go for it! They wouldn't mind.

I think you are over thinking it. Apply and see how it goes.

I wouldn’t think anything of it. Lots of overweight people are beautiful and healthy. Skinny people do not own beauty. Go for it!

I do like a good massage. Plenty of weight to use as pressure is always a plus. That’s an advantage at least.

Not for a receptionist it isn't.

Loads of receptionists multitask even the fat ones!

LittleArithmetics · 13/05/2025 19:25

I go to a salon (one that mainly does hair removal and facial treatments) and the person I see is entirely un-made up and unglamorous.

notatinydancer · 13/05/2025 19:25

I’d don’t think the weight would be an issue, but you’d need to be well presented.
Hair , make up , nails etc

I wouldn’t give two shits if they could do Botox without me looking like a man or an alien. Oh wait, I don’t get Botox because I don’t want to look like a man or an alien.

I have Botox in my 11s twice a year and I do not look like a man nor an alien!

You can say what you like but sadly, employers do judge people on how they look when that person will be representing their business and the beauty industry is particularly superficial.

That's exactly why I posted the AIBU.
I've had no issue securing employment in offices and front of house, but for very different industries to H&B.

Very presentable, polished and well groomed/put together.
Age and weight irrelevant

But like a poster above deffo would not want an overweight PT

I can wear office type clothes, definitely not polished.
I really just don't want to turn up for the interview and make a fool of myself.

I chose an overweight PT. She’s moved now but she was bloody brilliant & I still use the workout plan she designed for me, because I can see the results.

I picked her because I wanted to train with a woman about my age who would get it when I talked about perimenopause, rather than one of the intense young muscled blokes. We had a good laugh & we’re still in touch.

Tulipsontoast · 13/05/2025 19:30

Apply! You never know, you might be exactly what they are looking for! They may have had plenty of young ladies who are slim, nice hair, brows and make up that can’t do the job! You will never know unless you apply. Good luck!

Slim people make fools of themselves too!

Everyone does.

It’s an interview. A learning experience.

Part of life’s ups and downs.

SilenceInside · 13/05/2025 19:41

If the people interviewing you make you feel foolish then it would be a lucky escape not to work there! Smart work clothes, clean, tidy is fine, not foolish.

As others have said, I wouldn't care if a PT was overweight, and certainly don't have any interest in the weight of a receptionist.

TheIceBear · 13/05/2025 19:41

I don’t think being overweight is an issue at all in this kind of setting but looking well groomed is essential I think

AnImmenseDislikeOfPeople · 13/05/2025 19:48

If you apply, interview, and don't get the job, will you assume it is because of your weight? And will it affect your self esteem?

I couldn't work in a beauty salon because I'd never feel pretty enough. Good on the people who can. But if you're like me and will spend every day feeling inadequate and like the ugly one, then I wouldn't bother. It's a me-issue, but I'd rather be happy than self-conscious everyday.

Englishsummerblues · 14/05/2025 08:21

@ShortyShortsthe manager. The dentists made the decision to fire me lol. I can laugh about it as I knew at the time I wasn’t right for the job, it was all boob jobs and Botox.

Renabrook · 14/05/2025 08:30

I have no interest in beauty etc. So wouldn't really go there but I would have no issue for someone is friendly and professional, I have never smoked but have never got the logic of doctors and nurses should be non smokers

Seme as I would be fine with a makeup artist not using mke up themselves, or using a bald hairdresser etc.

I don't think that deeply about staff

5128gap · 14/05/2025 08:30

Personally if I was a customer I'd be very happy to see an ordinary looking person as the perfect looking people intimidate me a little! I'd also be delighted to take fitness advice from someone who was overweight and older. I'd much prefer relatable to aspirational and their own appearance wouldn't effect their knowledge of the subject. Though for a reception role that's not relevant. However, that said, I would manage your expectations as its possible they will have an image in mind to represent them front of house and you could lose out if that's the case.

ForRealThisTime · 14/05/2025 08:34

I don’t trust overweight nurses, doctors and healthcare professionals , but I wouldn’t care if it was in the beauty sphere. I particularly wouldn’t care if it was for a member of support staff.

ItGhoul · 14/05/2025 08:35

Age and weight wouldn’t be relevant for me. I would probably expect them to be well-groomed and well-presented, but that’s all. And by well-groomed I don’t mean lots of makeup, just presentable.

Where on earth did they inject your botox to leave you looking like a man? Botox smooths out wrinkles and men have wrinkles...?

SilviaSnuffleBum · 14/05/2025 09:01

I'm thinking about the hair/beauty salon I go to (I only gp for hair, never beauty treatments).
The staff - all female - range from, I'd say, early 20s to early 50s. There come in all shapes and sizes. However, they all have 'well maintained' hair and wear 'visible' make up.

TheHouseofGirth · 14/05/2025 09:02

Just apply. Give it a go.

MyOliveHelper · 14/05/2025 09:04

Jabbathejob · 13/05/2025 18:52

Grin it's front of house, so reception and booking!

It would tell me that they likely have thought about how to accommodate a voluptuous woman. They'll have robes or whatever that are over a size 12, and chairs that can seat people over 8stone or Becky at the front would have cussed them out.

AlpacaMittens · 14/05/2025 09:08

I wouldn't think of anything. My expectations would stop at someone looking smart and polished etc, nothing else would cross my mind.
