New job - already fed up with unhealthy ‘working lunches‘

I’ve been in my new job since February and in the main really enjoy it. However, we have monthly ‘planning meetings’ which so far are always scheduled to run through lunch (usually 11-3) and the bosses arrange for a lunch to be provided. Last month, it was a job lot of Greggs ‘beige’ - sausage rolls etc, and today it was stacks of dominoes which everyone could pile in to.

I haven’t said anything so far as I don’t want to appear ungrateful, and the majority of my colleagues seemed ecstatic with these choices, but as someone who is quite big on health and fitness, this is really irritating. We get a 5-10
minute break from this at most which isn’t enough time for me to do much more than go to the loo (big office with microwave facilities downstairs and always a queue over lunch).

Would you ask to get a longer break so I can have my own lunch? I’m just conscious this will delay the meeting for everyone else so very wary of asking.

Smaller than the average then. If you’re going to be this cruel and disrespectful at least have the balls to own it.

Size 14-16 is not a healthy weight. Sorry if it makes you feel bad but we have to start being honest with ourselves.

OP take an insulated flask or container if you really can’t stomach a cold lunch. Or just have a slice of pizza. You are being a little precious and rigid about this.

Jesus, it’s once a month, just eat the food it won’t kill you or else take in a packed lunch…. This really isn’t a difficult quandary

It’s not a quandry you’re right , but it does raise the question of whether companies should be required to support healthy eating . NHS has enough problems with obesity crisis and we are being told UCPs are really bad for us.

I’m in a six figure management role for a very recognisable company, thanks for your concern though hun x

And you can’t work out that you can use a hot food flask.

Sure Hmm

No, mostly middle aged and a mixed of genders believe it or not. Respectfully, the average size is probably 14/16+!

Heaven forfend someone dares to be a size 14/16

Maybethisallthereis · 13/05/2025 21:08

AliceSeal · 13/05/2025 18:32

I don’t really like cold lunches, I meal prep and have something which fits my macros for tracking too so eating junk isn’t really an option.

Hmm you’re making this an issue!

Blimey, I knew MN’ers disliked successful women, but I underestimated the pure vitriol being slim and successful would result in!

Whatever happened to women supporting women? Xx

Women aren’t supporting you because you sound absolutely awful - not because of your success

I think companies with canteens / restaurants do provide healthy alternatives but this is a once a month meeting, the employees won’t be eating it every day, if someone cannot eat some ‘unhealthy’ food once in a while they are showing that they have an unhealthy attitude towards food…..it’s food for gods sake, it won’t bloody kill you?!?

Upinthetreetops · 13/05/2025 21:11

Sorry this feels like a non issue. Don't eat it if you don't like it, you dont need to kick up a fuss and dictate what others eat. I'm sure you can put up with a nice salad, fruit, yoghurt etc. once a month if hot packed lunch not possible. Lesser of two evils in your eyes I'd say?

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 13/05/2025 21:12

It would appear that you’re having your arse handed to you on a plate. Maybe try eating that instead?

Over playing it now OP.

Happens at my place and I take some lunch with me.

PenelopeSkye · 13/05/2025 21:13

Yes you’d be unreasonable to ask for a longer break to go and make some hot food specifically for yourself. I don’t get why for that once a month you couldn’t take in a cold lunch- tonnes of healthy options where you could still be super healthy if you wanted. Or just snack on some fruit/nuts/cheese and have a decent breakfast and dinner.

In fairness it’s a size 4 teeny weeny arse so a few mere nibbles
Not like a gargantuan MN or corporate porky arse

Hulabalu · 13/05/2025 21:02

Athwat - Why don’t you carry on creating your own weird arguments and have them with yourself on your own thread ? 😄

There's not even an argument in my post. Is what you really mean that if people say something daft, I ought to ignore it instead of giving a reason why it's daft? Why do you think that's a good thing?

bigfacthunter · 13/05/2025 21:14

ToKittyornottoKitty · 13/05/2025 19:33

Hold on, you said those who didn’t agree with you were ‘resident porkers’. No way are you smart enough to have that 6 figure job. No wonder you can’t work out how to bring your own cold lunch into work

The assumption that only smart people can have 6 figure salaries… 🤣 Have you been around people in finance? (I’m sure there are lots of smart people in finance but in my experience it’s definitely not a given).

But OP not sure what the pile on with you is about? I’d absolutely hate to waste my cheat day on Greggs or Dominoes. But I’d just make up a healthy salad box for one day a month. No big deal.

ozuk · 13/05/2025 21:15

Don’t be the one that’s hard work. Figure it out without impacting others.

littlefireseverywhere · 13/05/2025 21:15

Why can’t you just have a salad that you bring from Home alongside half of a sausage roll or a slice of pizza? I really think you’re overthinking this.

Did you read the thread where they started insulting their fat colleagues and got banned for it? Did that not give you a clue what the pile on was about?

Well you totally lost any sympathy from me there.

I'm a size 20 on top 18 on bottom and I wouldn't touch Dominos or Greggs with a bargepole. As for the enduring popularity of foods like McDonald's I'm at a loss. I'm a small eater and a healthy one. For example I gave away all but one of my easter eggs and I only finished that yesterday. I'm a big apple shaped lass like my grandma, whereas my sisters are petite pear shapes like my mum. It's genetic, they eat more than I could and neither of them hit the treadmill like I do. And I'm sick to fuck of people like you insinuating that I'm a tubster due to bad choices or overeating. Fat people are not bad or lazy or continuously filling themselves with Greggs.

You're obviously just a typical mumsnet fat shamer. Someone so obsessed by your diet that you track your macros and yet you can't even think of a single cold lunch to satisfy your needs? Pretty shit that.

You might want to consider that intermittent fasting has many benefits. You should probably just go without.

Doubt it will cure that judginess though.

BunfightBetty · 13/05/2025 21:18

On the off chance this isn’t actually a wind-up thread you’re enjoying hugely, OP, and this is actually real, there’s only one thing you need to do:

Get therapy for your eating disorder.

Get a hot food flask. Works for stews, soups, veg, rice etc.
