Mounjaro with 2 stone to lose.

RER · 12/05/2025 18:54

I am approx half a stone overweight by BMI standards, but realistically I need to lose 2 stone to be in comfortable healthy weight. I have tried for years since having my baby to shift this weight. My friends are taking the injections and swear by it.

I am not massively overweight - would I even be eligible for weight loss injections like mounjaro? Are there any bad or permanent side effects? My DH is deathly against it and swears ‘tons of women are getting osteoporosis’ because of the injections. Any truth to this?

Please only factual information or advice - I know to eat better, move more etc. If it was that simple I would have lost the weight by now.

You won’t even be eligible for them if you’re only half a stone overweight (BMI of 26 I would guess?).

Namechange1345677 · 12/05/2025 19:03

You won't be eligible. Also the side effects are real for some. My friend has suffered horrendously with hair loss and she's taking all the vitamins she should be.

BethDuttonYeHaw · 12/05/2025 19:04

Not eligible.

BMI of 30. Or 28 with certain health conditions. Sorry.

wizzywig · 12/05/2025 19:04

What is your bmi? Are you white? I got it with a bmi of 29 as im Asian

RER · 12/05/2025 19:19

My BMI is 25.5.

You won’t qualify with that BMI.

blubbyblub · 12/05/2025 19:22

Even if you were Asian and had a weight related health condition you wouldn’t be eligible

FortyElephants · 12/05/2025 19:25

What makes you think you'd be eligible for this medical treatment for obesity?

kerrykitten · 12/05/2025 20:09

I’ve just started and unfortunately have terrible side effects. This is my day 2 after the injection and I’ve had awful stomach pain, diarrhoea, and nausea that I’ve had to sleep all day through and still not gone. I hope tomorrow is better. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll keep it up with these side effects, and try slimming world instead

Oneborneverydecade · 12/05/2025 20:14

I tried it twice, once in August and once in about March this year. Both times the side effects were so bad that I stopped immediately. In August I had diarrhea that kept me off work for a couple of days, this year I started vomiting within 12hrs and didn't stop for 5 days or so. I guess I'm allergic.
I have friends who have taken it with little to no side effects so it's the luck of the draw. That said I would assume your risks increase if you weigh less - I don't know though.

I mean you can buy it yourself privately i guess?

Only illegally without a prescription.

You can take a smaller dose by counting the clicks, to see if you can tolerate that.

People buying privately are still getting a prescription

No, you can’t. You can only buy it privately, via a prescription, with a bmi of 30 (or 27 with an obesity related condition).

My friend had to have her gallbladder removed, first thing the dr asked her was is she taking the weight loss injections, she was and had been for 6 months

Blackbird84 · 12/05/2025 20:51

You won’t get it legitimately with a BMI that low. You could of course lie on your online application for it and might get past the photo check. A lot of people get significant side effects though. With so little weight to lose, you might be better doing the Fast 800 diet. People usually shift a couple of stone in 3 months on that (though usually from a higher initial weight).

What would your BMI be if you lost 2 stone?

After three weeks I was rushed to A and E. I had gallstones and now have to have my gallbladder taken out. I'm in agony most days whilst I wait for surgery.

Butterfly44 · 12/05/2025 20:57

You won’t get it on that bmi. Too low!! Far from obese. Yes there are side effects. Just google it. Nauseous, diarrhoea, sickness, headaches common. Gallstones …as above poster also had to have gallbladder out.. Effects on gallbladder, liver and pancreas. Plus 93% regain, some more than what they lost. It’s a temporary fix unless plans to stay on it long term

Pleatherandlace · 12/05/2025 21:04

Could you try a meal replacement plan instead. You’d loose the weight quickly but will then obviously have to have a think about what lifestyle changes to make so that you can keep it off. Although that’s the same as with any set. You’d loose the weight in a month to 6 weeks with something like lighter life.

You seem to know an awful lot about it. Could you share the incidence of gall stones, and that against comparable significant non-GLP weight loss? Or are you perhaps just repeating things you've read on SM/DM?

SilenceInside · 12/05/2025 22:14

If you want factual info don’t ask randoms on MN, you can look at any of the websites of the pharmacies that supply weight loss injections and read lots of info there about these medication. The Asda Online Doctor website had lots of articles in its Weight Loss Injections FAQs section for example.

As others have said, you will not be able to get a legitimate prescription of this treatment for obesity because you’re not obese.

Butterfly44 · 12/05/2025 22:41

@financialmuddleThe OP asked for risks and these risks are directly listed on the information leaflet that accompanies the medication. As a doctor I do know a lot about it and the stat I referenced is published. OP not eligible anyway. Am taking it myself and certainly not against their use.

That was a rather alarmist summary for a doctor. As you say, patient information a better source: uk.lilly.com/metabolic/assets/pdf/mounjaro-patient-booklet.pdf
