Just that really, dp prefers dark and wants to change doors and worktops…I think if we change handles it might be fine.i love the idea of dark too, but i like the bright and airy feel too so im a bit torn. But obviously we both need to be happy. Just looking for opinions. Thank you.

This is pretty much the colour we have although ours is a shaker style. We also have the walls the same colour. It’s clean and fresh. We love it.

myplace · 11/05/2025 11:43

It would be very wasteful to replace tops and doors on an unused kitchen, surely? I would think you need contrast, so darker floor, walls and accessories would work.

Dolallytats · 11/05/2025 11:43

I'd probably change the worktops to a darker colour and paint the walls so there is contrast. I'd leave the cupboards.

I’m sure we could sell them…

Have you thought of mixed materials? We have an oak effect on the top and then white on the bottom.

queenofthesuburbs · 11/05/2025 11:45

If you keep the cupboards, you'd need to have a bolder colour on the walls and maybe a wooden floor to soften it.

I was thinking this too…and change the handles also…maybe black or brushed chrome?

Dp not keen on that at all…🤣 it’s one or the other to him.

Yeah we don’t like bright colours at all, we like muted tones and dark colours like black, navy or deep greens. So we’re limited, that’s why the darker kitchen units might be best and then lighter walls for brightness…I’m getting so confused 🤣

What colour handles do you have? Similar or darker?

I’d do a colour on the walls - sage green would be a nice contrast without being bright. Then see what you think. Benefit of that is that it’s cheap to change if you decide you want to keep the walls white and change the kitchen after all.

It would be a now or ten years later job to be honest, I would like to change it if we are before the floors go in etc. I love sage green though yes!! 🙌

What about a darker colour on the cabinets and a lighter worktop? Then you get the light bouncing on the worktop but still ground it with a darker colour on the bottom.

or a darker colour on the lower cabinets and lighter on the top ones?

I like the idea of black doors with a white marble top yes! I think that’s where we are both leaning towards, either that or a dark wood top and keep the lighter colour doors.

Mine is dark green cupboards, oak worktops and beige walls because I can't stand light kitchens either 😅

Kitchenbattle · 11/05/2025 12:31

I think I’m gonna go black/navy cupboards and white marble with some grey veins etc to keep it bright. Black sink and taps the too. Either no handles or a brushed chrome. Dp is keen on that too.

Do not have dark worktops, whatever else you do. i've got dark marbled ones and they show up every little crumb, much more than the old light ones they replaced. It drives me mad and I want to wipe the worktops constantly.

It is, and i bitterly regret it! Never even occurred to me when we chose the kitchen. Light worktops and darker cupboards would be much better.

Keep as it is and the paint walls dark. See pic

I don't like dark kitchens, they drain all the light in the room and make it gloomy & dismal.

For it to work you need a large, light filled room. The weather & the light in the UK mean that dark colours (& the ubiquitous grey) dont work well for the majority of the year.
They will date too - this is the current fashion but in a couple if years something else will be "in"

I love this…however, this is quite a large open space with a sunroom off it so it may be too much I fear.

Definitely darken the walls and the bar/ worktop part. It will transform the kitchen cheaply.
Also darken your accessories with plants dark ceramic pots, pictures.

My SIL did this one weekend and the kitchen looked transformed for several hundred.
