Wishing that disposable BBQs were banned fully

A couple of summers ago, many retailers stopped selling disposable BBQs as had a hot dry summer which could be the perfect conditions to have fires.

I would like to see these permanently banned. Why? They make people have BBQs in places which aren’t allowed such as the country parks, most beaches. People leave them and the associated rubbish behind. Seen them with packs of hot dog rolls with 1-2 left, bottles of sauce with just 2-3 hot dogs worth taken. It burns the ground. Also on beaches, people have buried them and people walk on the area - causing them to have 3rd degree burns and skin grafts.

I agree with the sentiment but not with banning everything due to a useless few who just don't care. Would that really stop them or would they still find a way to be ignorant litterbugs. Probably the latter.

I don't like the knee jerk reaction to ban everything but I understand where you're coming from.

Stellaris22 · 10/05/2025 18:12

No, I don’t agree with banning them. Some people want bbqs when they can’t have a proper bbq for some reason eg renting. By banning them you’re just affecting those less well off.

TheNightingalesStarling · 10/05/2025 18:16

When we were living in Germany we bought a travel BBQ... its on legs so off the ground, it has water in the base for extra cooling and it has a bag. No bigger than a disposable BBQ.

I used to have a little bucket bbq that cost less than a tenner, much better value than the disposable ones.

HeartyOchreHelper · 10/05/2025 18:19

Agree they should be banned, or at least very restricted. They’re so dangerous in the summer. Look at what happened in the Trossachs last week - a fire the size of two rugby pitches and the burger was still on the disposable culprit when it was found..!

Barbecue which sparked Trossachs blaze found with charred burger on top

Frustrated conservationists have asked visitors to “use their noggin!” when out and about in the area, particularly given recent high risk of wild fires.

I agree that they should be banned. Terrible for the environment too. Scotland is on red fire risk alert. We saw one burning on the beach earlier today. Very close to grass. It had been left and had reignited.

DonnaBanana · 10/05/2025 18:23

Wouldn’t stop me either way. Easy to get a metal tray and chuck some charcoal and lighter fluid on, done it plenty of times when the shop has run out. Can’t be arsed with cleaning a normal bbq

Missey85 · 10/05/2025 18:24

I live in a country with more risk of fire than yours Thier not banned here 😊 in Australia during summer you can use one when you like unless it's a fire ban day and for the most part the UK reaches nowhere near the heat and humidity required to make the ban ❤️ as to people using them at the park don't be such a fun sponge! And enjoy the few days of sun you have I know I would

Also probably cleaner than the public one that some drunk guys pissed on! 🙁

BlinkeredBay · 10/05/2025 18:26

No, don’t agree with banning them. We often BBQ on the beach, normally breakfast.

we are able to remove all rubbish, including the BBQ, and dispose everything safely.

its the people not the bbq.

HamieandHave · 10/05/2025 18:28

No I don’t think they should be banned. The issue, as always, lies with idiotic users. Why should the rest of us go without?

I wish they'd take them home with them then. Local beaches have them left, usually partially covered in sand. Fires have been started by idiots leaving these things smoldering. Unfortunately, some people cannot be trusted to be responsible.

ComtesseDeSpair · 10/05/2025 18:37

They aren’t great, but people who litter would litter with a cold picnic regardless. I like the concept which you find across the US, many parks and beaches have fixed, permanent heavy duty barbecues for public use: you bring your own charcoal and they’re free to use. Often a really nice way of building community spirit as well. I’ve seen them in a couple of London parks, I’d be in favour of wider roll out.

LlynTegid · 10/05/2025 18:39

Unfortunately I agree with the OP. Too many people are irresponsible and as it can cause fires, sadly I think necessary.

FiveBarGate · 10/05/2025 18:44

I'm with you @Cornercandy .

It's not much more to buy a folding one. They are terrible in every way for the environment.

Kids have ended up badly burned from running over them when idiots bury them on the beach.

They cook your food badly as well because they rarely heat evenly. I'm not a fan.

MissyB1 · 10/05/2025 18:44

I wouldn't even call them a BBQ, disgusting things that can't even cook meat safely, I'd love to know how many people get food poisening from under cooked chicken done on those things. And yes big fire risk.

Seen lowlifes using a supermarket trolley as a bbq grill. Plus a wire basket underneath for the charcoal.

Some people have no idea when you put meat on a bbq. It’s when the fire dies down. Sometimes I can smell lighter fluid in gardens around me that are having BBQs. Surely that means that the food tastes of lighter fluid? Yum! Not!

I really hate disposable bbq's, they are such a waste of resources because the whole thing is binned, and not necessarily by the purchaser. Any single use item is just wasteful.

Buy a reusable bbq, and a bag of charcoal, and do it properly.

YearlySubscriptionRenewal · 10/05/2025 19:37

Absolutely agree.

Even if you are renting, nothing stops you from having a proper barbecue.

These things are not needed, and cause too many problems. No one needs to have barbecue in public places, or they can campaign and fund public bbq, like Australia and many places have them.

Unless (like me) you live in a flat with no outside space.

I use disposable BBQs probably once or twice a year, and that's at the beach. Of course I dispose of it correctly once I'm done with it.

I agree with other posters - it's down to the person using one, and like all things, you have a few idiots that spoil it for everyone else.

Potnoodly · 10/05/2025 19:47

I live in a national park and fucking hate them. Mostly because they are left behind. I collect and dispose of at least half a dozen a week during the summer.

ArtTheClown · 10/05/2025 19:47

I'd ban them. You can get portable bbqs including gas ones of you don't fancy making a fire. I suspect that would stop the scum with their supermarket carrier bags that head out to ruin the countryside for everyone whenever the sun comes out.

I have used them many times. When used by a competent cook they are perfectly capable of cooking meat safely.

Fizbosshoes · 10/05/2025 19:54

We've had them a couple of times on the beach , on holiday. The last time was at a tiny, pebble beach with barely anyone there. We took everything away with us
That was 3 years ago so if they were banned I doubt I'd miss it too much
