Wishing that disposable BBQs were banned fully

A couple of summers ago, many retailers stopped selling disposable BBQs as had a hot dry summer which could be the perfect conditions to have fires.

I would like to see these permanently banned. Why? They make people have BBQs in places which aren’t allowed such as the country parks, most beaches. People leave them and the associated rubbish behind. Seen them with packs of hot dog rolls with 1-2 left, bottles of sauce with just 2-3 hot dogs worth taken. It burns the ground. Also on beaches, people have buried them and people walk on the area - causing them to have 3rd degree burns and skin grafts.

Wildfires from a disposable bbq..ffs. get a grip.

It's the biggest causes of wildfires in heathland habitats.

It only takes one though to start a wild fire on somewhere like heathland habitat & the damage to rare wildlife is permanent.

We have so little left of some of these habitats, why risk it when people can have sandwiches, picnics etc. There's just no need for disposable BBQs.

Of course there is. If there wasn’t, none would be sold.

That has exactly been the cause of wildfires on headlands and dry grasslands around here, many times over. Cigarette ends, discarded glass bottles and disposable BBQs are the most common causes.

I wouldn't even call them a BBQ, disgusting things that can't even cook meat safely, I'd love to know how many people get food poisening from under cooked chicken done on those things. And yes big fire risk.

Absolute nonsense. They’re dead easy to use and cook food well on.

Disposable barbecue are banned in my national park and I’m sure that you can’t sell them either

Same here (new forest) but people still bring them in. It's a constant battle from Easter all through the summer.

There's been several fires already this year - thankfully all responded to & extinguished quickly by the fire brigade.

The heathland in particular is tinder dry & it's only a matter of time before another devastating wildfire.

I just don't understand - are people not educated about the risk or just so self absorbed & arrogant that they do it anyway?!

What's wrong with sandwiches & picnic?

vipersnest1 · 10/05/2025 22:02

They don’t make anyone do anything - some people choose to use them in inappropriate situations. That’s a completely different thing.

icreaminbarnsley · 10/05/2025 22:20

Would have agreed with you until fairly recently and I no longer have a garden. It's very easy to say ban them when you have the privilege of being able to have a bbq set up in your garden/yard. If you don't, the only chance you'll have to have a bbq is a disposable one. They don't automatically make people irresponsible or prone to littering or settling fires, there are people who do that anyway.

There was a big fire this week in Scotland caused by a disposable BBQ. I posted a link to it up thread but you can just Google for yourself, there’s been a few instances.

For £119 you can buy a ninja indoor grill or for £100 more a wood fire indoor grill , more economical in the long run if you don’t have a garden or any outside space

CheeseWisely · 10/05/2025 22:40

@icreaminbarnsleyWe don’t have a garden. We have a portable BBQ. It’s a bit like this one and cost about the same as 3 disposable BBQs.

I suggest that rather like the Ford Capri, Jet Ski, Dangerous Dogs (Insert product of choice) etc they are disproportionately attractive to people who should never be allowed near them/detained in secure accommodation etc

Hillsaremyhappyplace · 10/05/2025 22:46

@Dangermoo it’s true, and no need to be rude.

I helped give first aid to a toddler last summer who’d burnt his feet after a disposable bbq was used on a beach. The bbq had been moved away but had left a scorching hot patch of sand. Absolutely awful 😢.

We see this at our local beaches, appalling.

This. Of course they cook the same as regular BBQs. 🙄

YearlySubscriptionRenewal · 11/05/2025 11:09

The "I don't have a garden so I have the right to have a bbq" is nonsense.

You don't start putting your laundry in public place, or set up a paddling pool in the middle of a park so your kids don't miss out? You don't build a shed to store your bike and the kids scooter because it's unfair you have no outdoor storage? Why do you think bbq should be different?

Laundry and small paddling pools would be less of a hazard!

QueensOfTheVolksAge · 11/05/2025 11:16

For me, I am severely visually impaired, and also a single parent. I am only able to use a disposable BBQ, I can't manage (nor afford) a "real"one, and I'd be extremely sad if the disposable option was taken away for us. We use it following all of the rules (and almost 100% only in our own garden, not on an arid grassland like the dickheads do) and also recycle the parts afterwards, my most recent one had instructions on how to recycle each different part.

But I do broadly agree with op, HOWEVER a ban isn't the answer. The answer is to stop idiots idioting, and unfortunately we will never manage that... It staggers me how inconsiderate some people can be of their environment and duty to clean up and be sensible. if I can manage it blind, why the fuck can't they?! Maybe giant signs or on the spot fines or something. It'll never happen though. There's other associated issues with these (usually) tourists, around here they leave human shit and toilet roll about, loose dogs, theft, parking etc etc etc....

Why are some people on Mumsnet obsessed with banning things that are deemed beneath them. Don’t say it isn’t that, it clearly is

👏 👏 the same people who will then call out others on intolerance, being blown into isms.

Womanofcustard · 11/05/2025 11:33

I think everything ‘disposable’ should be banned!
As someone once said, “Don’t throw it away- there is no away”

I’m not snooty about them at all. I’ve used them myself, lots. Until I read up on all the fire issues and thought about the waste.

ArtTheClown · 11/05/2025 12:05

So someone should never be able to bbq because of where they live?! WTF!

They can get a little portable one if they want.

Mingenious · 11/05/2025 12:12

I’d rather ban the kind of people that use them in completely unsuitable places and then leave them discarded.

It's not about "beneath" anyone. No one is policing what kind of things you are using in your own home. It's about policing things that are unsafe and frankly do not need to be sold full stop.

Similar argument goes for fireworks. I personally love fireworks, but I agree that only public organised ones should be allowed nowadays. No one needs to be a menace and have crap private "displays" from their balcony, private garden or the local park.
