Been told they are

Here’s an example of an average week, more or less:

Monday (I work at 6, so do something simple)

Feta & red onion salad with new potatoes & rice

Tuesday

Pasta with jar pesto (working today)

Wednesday

Dh to do omlette/eggs on toast with salad (working today)

Thursday

Salmon, salad, new potatoes

Friday

Homemade chilli with rice, nachos & dips

Saturday

Takeaway

Sunday

Roast dinner/homemade lasagne

Are they?

Definitely not rubbish!

Tbrh · 11/05/2025 06:16

It doesn't seem that nutritious for growing children, don't notice much variation especially red meat and greens. Also it would boring if you ate that every week

@Sowhatbigdeal Where do you live? It's relevant for several reasons.

The first is seasonal availability - markets brimming with fresh produce for instance.

The second is cultural norms and if you're from the UK , making 'UK type meals' rather than a diet of the country you're in now.

The third, as you say, is the climate and if it's hot then salads tend to be eaten more in Mediterranean countries.

The other issue is the availability of 'fast food' and how much the country eats.

Your weekly menu sounds very westernised but not as varied as somewhere like Spain France, etc or the Far East.

Markets are few and far between where I live in S England. Farmers market in nearby town sells things like plants and very expensive chutneys.
Nearest food market once a week , 25 minute drive away and most things cost the same as the Coop over the road plus petrol.
Nearest farm shop 10 miles away, not cheap also petrol.

A French market is a lovely thing but not so available here.

What do you typically eat for dinner? I can’t see how chicken fish and beef plus salads isn’t healthy for kids?

And its 30 a week by the way, not a day,

Most MNs will say they easily achieve 30 in a day along with 23000 steps before breakfast 🙄

3 of those 7 are proper meals (Thursday, Friday and Sunday if the lasagne has lots of vege in it/with it). If that’s average every week yeah the rest isn’t great. Especially a weekly takeaway. I’ve never met anyone who has a weekly takeaway but I’ve heard of it here on mumsnet!

My dad does! When I was living at home I got sooo sick of greasy crap every Friday! For a while when I was a teenager there was a takeaway place that did basically a bit of everything. I was always pleased when the others chose that place (they loved the chicken tikka kebab thing) because I could order a jacket potato with ham and cheese. To this day Friday night is takeaway night in my dad's house.

Which is fare enough.
Its not a storage thing then, it’s a choice.

No - it’s both. I can’t physically store all that stuff at once but I also don’t care enough to switch it up. I buy what I know I’ll use and what won’t sit lingering in the back of a cupboard or in the bottom of the fridge.

Both things can be true 😉

doodahdayy · 11/05/2025 07:48

I’d get sick of anything if I just rotated the same few meals each week.

I try and do something from all the food groups roughly, ensure a few servings of veg, always try and have some greens and overall 'all the colours of the rainbow' for DC. So last dinner was lamb, steamed brocolli, cauli and carrots, and an orange. The night before, fish, corn and peas, and spinach and ricotta ravioli. Also a glass of milk. I might add some cheese or a yogurt or banana if I don't think they've eaten enough. I think half of OPs meals seem fine, assuming there's veg, but Monday/ Tuesday/ Friday and Saturday seemed less than ideal, also seems carb heavy.

Pottering about the house!

spoonbillstretford · 11/05/2025 08:57

Looks ok to me, OP.

I don't know if you do veg with your pesto pasta but I always chuck in broccoli for the last few minutes of the pasta cooking. Spring greens or spinach are dead easy as well.

I get 20k steps in before breakfast just by doing the housework - don't you?!

It's only carb-heavy if you are eating a low carb diet for some reason. Also it's only dinners.

I do 30k in my sleep before I wake up, you need to stop slacking.

I feel so disappointed in myself 😔

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are pretty rubbish tbh. Salmon and new potatoes is ok but boring.

Shes wrong anyway. She 100% has met someone who has a takeaway every week. Probably every day too. Its just they haven't announced it and shes taken it as verbatim that they dont.

Bjorkdidit · 11/05/2025 11:33

I always raise an eyebrow when people confidently post on here that 'I don't know anyone who does or doesn’t do X Y or Z' because how could they possibly know?

Because people talk to each other? Confused

So every single person you know has announced how many takeaways they have? I can only think of 2 people who I know how many they have.

Well, obviously I don't know every single detail, but I do talk to my friends and know roughly what kind of food they eat, how often they go out and how often they order takeaway etc. I think that's fairly normal.

DH and I get takeaway once a week on average, most people I know are similar - and I know that because they tell me, or share it on social media, or I see them queuing at the chippy up the road, lol.

Because on MN, every single meal has to contain multiple vegetables, herbs and spices Wink

Op had salad with it 🤷🏻‍♀️

It sounds a lovely mid-week family meal to me.

I agree - but MN is (as I said upthread) incredibly odd when it comes to food and what constitutes a normal, healthy meal.
