Been told they are

Here’s an example of an average week, more or less:

Monday (I work at 6, so do something simple)

Feta & red onion salad with new potatoes & rice

Tuesday

Pasta with jar pesto (working today)

Wednesday

Dh to do omlette/eggs on toast with salad (working today)

Thursday

Salmon, salad, new potatoes

Friday

Homemade chilli with rice, nachos & dips

Saturday

Takeaway

Sunday

Roast dinner/homemade lasagne

Are they?

Well dont you know everyone has to be some sort of kitchen maestro.

How could I forget 🤣

What’s wrong with lots of quick and easy meals?

I love quick and easy.

My aunt has this notion that more processes somehow equals a “ better” meal. “More fool she” I think. It just takes up time.

Yep I’m with you - can’t think of anything worse than spending hours faffing over a meal that will be gone in ten minutes.

I'm pretty sure there was a Michael mosley TV show where they took a family, did stool testing of their gut microbiome, then did several weeks where they tried to eat 30 different plant foods each week, then redid the stool tests and basically showed their gut biomes were loads loads healthier and much more diverse in terms of healthy bacteria.

Can you list the 30 plant foods per week we should be eating please?

Think up any 30 plant foods

Job done

Namechangean · 10/05/2025 21:38

Lots of perfect people on this thread. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. As long as you’ve no concerns regarding over/underweight then your meals sound varied and realistic to general life and healthy

So could we say:
garlic
onion
olive
dark chocolate?
wheat?
corn
tomato ketchup
pesto ( has basil)
pepper
chilli

Thats ten before you even start on fruit and veg.

faerietales · 10/05/2025 21:09

@DrPrunesqualerwe genuinely don’t have space to store all of those things at once. We do a weekly online shop and that’s it 🤷‍♀️

I don’t know the size of your kitchen so I couldn’t comment
Some are fresh ( veg rack, garden, fruit bowl )
Some tinned ( cupboard )
Some jars ( once opened they go in the fridge, ie stuff preserved in vinegar )
Some frozen ( freezer )

but if there’s no space in your kitchen for lots of different food then I’d mix it up each time you shop for variety

Because true martyrdom can only be activated when you spend hours in front of a stove.

It actually often destroys certain nutrients.

I mean, I could - but honestly, I just don’t care enough to bother. I’m not that interested in food so keep in what I know I’ll use on a regular basis.

It probably does actually.

I have assumed there is a salad dressing and the salad has plenty of variety in which case, I would be happy with that.

This week we have had Greek gnocchi traybake which includes feta, lentils and Mediterranean vegetables. Salmon with corn and roasted red pepper salad which comes with lots of vegetables and brown rice. Sweet potato, coconut and harissa soup with crusty bread. Lasagne and then, garlic and mustard chicken with brown rice and broth. Maybe there would sound less appealing if I said gnocchi traybake or just salmon with salad. They all have fresh herbs and lots of veggies and salad but you won’t get that from a simplified description. It all sounds lovely and healthy in the most part 😊

timeforachange999 · 10/05/2025 22:55

Does no-one on MN have a child who will only eat one vegetable with their school packed lunch; which is the same vegetable which is eaten for months on end before it becomes disgusting and swaps to a different veg? 😫

by the way fruit is basically sugar so it isn’t necessarily that good for you. Especially as you age and possibly become insulin resistant.

IberianBlackout · 10/05/2025 22:58

30 sounds insane if you work FT and have other things to do besides meal planning but let’s try:

rice
garlic
onions
tomato
carrots
peas
apples
pears
bananas
strawberries
grapes
(so far so easy I guess, this is the base of 90% of what I cook)

cabbage
sweet potatoes
butternut squash
leek
(there’s the soup)

avocado
broccoli
spinach
raspberries
blueberries
buckwheat
mushrooms
black beans
white beans
bell peppers
red beans
mango
chickpeas
artichoke
lemon
lime
oranges

(can’t lie, realistically I don’t think I’ll go through all of these in a week; I just won’t)

Which is fare enough.
Its not a storage thing then, it’s a choice.

Who does that?

Seriously its pretty easy so dont knock it

Tbh, I never knew it was a "thing" till I joined here, its also how we eat

Fruitbat99 · 11/05/2025 02:40

Egg on toast, with salad?

coxesorangepippin · 11/05/2025 02:56

They're totally normal

HAB75 · 11/05/2025 03:01

Some people don't know they are born 😄 If I hadn't done the cooking from about 13 and up, I would have had the same 4 dinners on permanent rotation - one of which was Macaroni Cheese from a long life packet 🤢 . I have a friend who was given chops, green beans, rice and potatoes every single day for years - only Sunday was different. Your dnners all sound very nice - varied and tasty. However, if you had a 2-week menu, it would probably be even better. I have four quick and very different pastas that take very little more effort or time than spooning in pesto - that might be a good place to start.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 11/05/2025 05:59

A salad with dinners is more than enough vegetables. I’m not sure what sort of salads most people on here are picturing?

Given 65% of the UK population is overweight or obese I honestly wouldn’t ask on a public forum. I find these answers so bizarre.

Your meals sound perfectly lovely.
