A Deadly American Marriage

Just watching A Deadly American Marriage in Netflix. Molly Martens is clearly derranged and murderous. She doesn't at all seem genuine. She reminded me a little of Amber Heard.. but like Amber Heard I'm wondering if her husband was entirely innocent of any wrongdoing. I'm basing this on the recordings she made covertly, in which her husband is heard to shout at her repeatedly, intervene when she speaks to his children, and accused her of disrespecting him. He also commented to his friend that Molly was "still crazy".. such a familiar trope.

What do you guys think?

In one segment, Molly’s dad said ‘I have no regrets’ and he said it in a way that gave me chills. Even if it had been self defence, most normal humans would feel some kind of negative emotion at having to take a human life. Bludgeoning someone to death is an extremely violent thing to do and I think a normal person would have feelings of horror and revulsion at what they’d had to do.

YourOnMute · 12/05/2025 12:44

I watched this last night.
I cannot understand how the charge was reduced was he was clearly senselessly hit to death over and over. Even with the self defence argument, the level of violence surely goes above anything like this?
I also don't understand how they got to question and throw away the asthma attack cause of death of his first wife. There was a pathology report and no indication of injuries that would suggest strangulation.
I also felt it was very onesided that they got to character assassinate Jason (with many lies) but Molly's ex (who was so traumatised he wrote a book before this) was not interviewed.

Yeah the line about no regrets stuck with me too. Even if it was legitimately self defence if I took another life, especially in such a violent way it would haunt me I’m sure of that. He was absolutely dead behind the eyes and his arrogance in general made my blood boil. How he described the father of Jason’s first wife as being uneducated (because he had a strong Irish accent, being born in Ireland wtf?) and then the blatant lies about Jason causing the death of his first wife were despicable.

He clearly felt that his background in the FBI meant he had the right to kill whoever the fuck he wanted to and should get away with it.

CalicoPusscat · 15/05/2025 06:24

I think Jason knew she wanted to take the children and was getting more and more wound up.

She had the advantage of recording conversations without his knowledge so could manipulate it into being the poor downtrodden wife.

She also said her father had served his country for most of his life - that doesn't give him (and her?) the right to kill him.

TooManyCupsAndMugs · 15/05/2025 06:50

I thought all of the above too - I think she acted like an absolute lunatic. The recordings of the "verbal abuse" were nothing of the sort - they were of a man frustrated that she was constantly overriding him and trying to take over his children. He had her number - the emails the sister found - and he knew that if she adopted the kids, she would break it off and keep them. Edited for spelling

Watched this tonight. I was sheding a few tears for the children.

Molly is absolutely batshit crazy.

The one thing that I couldn't understand was why she had a cinderblock on her nightstand? The story that she was going to paint some bricks with the kids didn't add up to me. Wouldn't they be in the garage, garden or at least the kitchen? And why just one in the bedroom?

Exactly. This really stood out for me. This murder was 100% premeditated.

I saw it last night and it was really hard to find the truth . She was clearly deranged but then the secret recordings did demonstrate him being awful to her so who knows . I also thought her dad was quite sinister . I agree with the poster above though in that we never heard who administered the blows and they were more than disabling they really beat him . The poor children .

Oh please, the viciousness of her attack was evil. You make excuses because she’s a woman?

Totallytoti · 18/05/2025 07:33

Her mother heard her scream yet went back to sleep? And didn’t hear the brutal attack but heard her initial scream. Remember that none of them are related to the kids so they had no interest as family. She actually looks evil.

Bustabloodvessel · 18/05/2025 07:36

Of course, her behaviour can be blamed on him..he’s a man he must have been abusive 🙄

Renabrook · 18/05/2025 07:40

So if a woman is insane a man is to blame?

CalicoPusscat · 18/05/2025 07:53

Obviously neither Molly or her father will ever recount exactly what happened.

I think it would drive most people wary and angry if a new wife had designs on their children.

Poor kids, I hope they are getting on OK getting caught up in the middle of all this.

hotpotlover · 18/05/2025 08:28

Another thing that stood out to me that she always called herself their mother and how much she missed them.

Yet, during a court hearing, I believe when a date was set for a retrial, she refused to look at the children.

notmoredirtywashing · 18/05/2025 09:49

I wanted to know why she was so desperate to have the children? If she wanted to be a mum why didn’t she have her own?

She had had a miscarriage previously.

YourOnMute · 20/05/2025 01:53

She had a miscarriage in a previous relationship where she horrifically abused her partner. He wrote a book about it prior to the murder.

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 20/05/2025 07:00

I've started listening to the "Big Mad True Crime" podcast where they do a deep dive into the case.

According to the podcast, she was still actually engaged when she moved to Ireland, and her fiance was waiting for her to come back.

It also mentioned that she'd approached Jason directly about the au pair job, and was not actually vetted by the agency

Does anyone find it strange that her mother has no part in this documentary?

BoldBlueZebra · 20/05/2025 11:09

I watched this for the first time the other day then I listened to big mad true crime podcast then I read Tracey’s (Jason’s sister) book. Today I tried to watch it again - I’ve had to turn it off Molly is deranged she lies like she’s telling the truth - I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone lie without even the most minuscule amount of leakage, and her dad is one creepy as shit guy they planned it together, they drugged him, and they killed him as sure as I’m sat here. how they have managed to twist the system just shows what a state the whole justice system is in in the USA.

I just watched this. Molly’s lawyer was talking such utter bollocks, making out that Mags could have died from internal injuries of strangulation without any external signs on her neck. Mags’ father said in his sworn statement that he’d only ever met Molly’s father once and that they had never discussed Mags’ death. He was just doing everything g he could to blacken Jason’s name.

I agree. At first I thought he sounded unpleasant, but when I rewound it she constantly interrupts him or starts talking to the children so he gets frustrated. He might not have been perfect but Molly is absolutely unhinged.
The throwing her head forward and sobbing?
The two children I feel for. Especially the son bless him.
