What careers are future proof?

I am thinking of retraining and wondering what careers do you think are future proof? I think the trades are e.g. plumber, electrician etc - any other thoughts? Thank you.

You think pubs will be a thing of the past? Im not so sure. I mean people like to gather dont they? Humans like to drink and they like to gather together and socialise. My locals (I have three in walking distance) and absolutely chocca at the weekends and I live in a small village. I mean you could be right though. They arent needed are they.
I mean restaurants could go, hairdressers, gyms - lockdown showed us how little we actually need. A lot of these things we can just do ourselves. Some of us choose to (I havent been to a hairdressers in years I do it myself).

When you really think about it there actually isnt any job that is totally future proof. Not if you are thinking of in 50 years time. We really have no idea.

’Tech’ - broad term for understanding technology and how it will continue to evolve

Think about those car mechanics mentioned above, yes their job will exist but its a VERY different job in the future as very few car engines will exist, just batteries and computers

They still have brake, steering and suspension parts which will need mechanics to fix.

How old are you OP? Because that would make a difference to my answer.

I'm not convinced teaching will be. I can see a world where there is mass homeschooling.
Social worker? Thats what I am. But I only have 10 years or so left in the game so I see that as pretty safe. But I can see a time when its possible they disappear. Medicine has got to be safe surely - always gonna need that. but then someone up thread said about redundancies. With finance Id be wary because things can change and surely machines will do those jobs better than humans eventually.

It's a really interesting question. Maybe no job is future proof!

I'm 40. So I've got at least another 25 years of working (probably more!)

And coding

Disagree - AI can code by itself.

Finance, accounting, HR

All of these jobs will be impacted my AI. I work for a fintech software company and that’s the future I see.

Titasaducksarse · 09/05/2025 14:42

Social Work specifically children's

bigkahunaburger · 09/05/2025 14:42

Could social work be impacted by AI? Maybe it could. In lockdown we did assessments via video calls - asked parents to show us round the house, talked to the kids etc, it wasnt ideal and lots slipped through the net, but I wonder if it would be possible in future. I know some staff who use ChatGP to write their reports up.

I mean could the knowledge of a social worker be transferred to AI so we arent needed, or needed much less? I wonder. Scary thought.

Yoga / fitness online has been and gone already - it was massive back in lockdown (for obvious reasons) and until about 2023 was still popular, but gym numbers have grown massively since then and are at their highest rates ever.
i work in the industry and 90% of us have gone back to face to face classes as they’re much more popular again now. People do actually need to be around PEOPLE and not doing everything remotely/ digitally.

That’s really interesting and I think it also makes sense.
Plenty of people enjoy human interaction and a personal experience.

LaserCatToyLunacy · 09/05/2025 14:42

I'm mis 50s, recently trained as a domiciliary Foot Care Professional.

Not sure toenails will ever stop growing, or will be cut by a computer.

Also, any field working with people with Learning Disabilities.

Finance, there will always be money in the world and people who want to count it.

AI will wipe out swathes of this sector

Data and coding also AI footholds now

EffinMagicFairy · 09/05/2025 14:45

Who will afford a hairdresser, or have trades people in or gardeners? If most jobs go to AI, how will people pay?

steff13 · 09/05/2025 14:45

I think it would be difficult for my job to be done by AI, but I'm in the US and it's a pretty niche position. I am an administrative law judge in the US and I conduct public assistance appeals. Obviously the decisions that I make are based in law, but there are a lot of nuances and variables that make it less straightforward than "the law says this."

Same position here-been told redundancy is almost inevitable for me. In my 40s and have spent my entire working life in the NHS, mostly as a qualified nurse.
It’s devastating.

Yes, nurses and teachers get made redundant in 40s, so jobs can be filled by lower paid, lower grade NQs. Not so future proof.

bigkahunaburger · 09/05/2025 14:47

steff13 well thats how I feel about social work. The decisions I make are well thought out, lots of nuances and variables and caveats, - but I can see how AI could enhance but maybe not replace. Because the decisions are based on years of experience and theoretical knowledge, - but AI could presumably make links about human behaviour and help me with that. Perhaps.

Absolutely not. One of the most at-risk.

Only kidding!!

TravellingSpoon · 09/05/2025 14:51

I work in social care.

AI wont get chance to get to it. At this rate, the funding will have run out before AI get the chance to catch up.

bigkahunaburger · 09/05/2025 14:51

Someone mentioned psychology. I'm actually of the mindset that this profession is on its way out. I think there has become a huge influx of people with mental health issues and multiple labels, but also a lack of respect for the profession. I think many people feel it doesn't actually help and may even hinder, and that there are just some things that can't be healed. I'm not saying I think that, I just sometimes wonder if the profession will stand the test of time. I don't think people generally see psychology the same way they did 20 years ago.

Good point. Do you think if it does it would help? I worked in MASH and we were turning around assessments at a rate of knots. I can see how it could help there and increase turnaround times.

Barber / hairdresser

always gonna have hair cuts 😂

I agree with this

I would add that nobody wants a robot with scissors near their head.

This is exactly what I was thinking. How do we fund / pay for the future proof jobs if everyone else has lost their employment due to AI?

powershowerforanhour · 09/05/2025 14:56

Comedian, maybe. Court jesters were around hundreds of years ago and comic timing and the ability to read and respond to the audience and make up funny stuff about current affairs would be very difficult for an AI generated hologram to do I think.
