What careers are future proof?

I am thinking of retraining and wondering what careers do you think are future proof? I think the trades are e.g. plumber, electrician etc - any other thoughts? Thank you.

I think dentistry is pretty safe for a while. At least until they can regrow teeth. And I wouldn’t be allowing a robot to do my teeth any time soon. But to be honest, I wouldn’t ever EVER recommend anyone goes into dentistry unless it’s all they’ve dreamt of. It’s awful these days and I so wish I could get out of it. (I’m a hygienist not a dentist but it’s just as bad. I just want out of dentistry totally)

NHS dentist and I feel the exact same- it's dreadful isn't it...

Hairdressing. Robots are never going to cut hair.

Finance, accounting, HR

More and more accounting will be done via AI - in many cases better than the human who used to punch all the documents in

Curious - Why is it so dreadful?

Vet medicine. Although some of what we doi s being replaced by AI, computers that interpret x-rays, slides etc. but most of what we do will always need humans.

Yes. Anything involving animals really. I can't see a robot being able to manhandle a furious cat that needs its teeth looking at.😂

Anything that requires humour, kindness, empathy, etc.

This sums it up.

I think they have found a way to regrow teeth, early stages but technology will grow fast!

Same position here-been told redundancy is almost inevitable for me. In my 40s and have spent my entire working life in the NHS, mostly as a qualified nurse.
It’s devastating.

What. On. EARTH???
I can’t get my head around this. Can anyone explain why on earth this is happening?? Surely we need more health care professionals, not fewer?
I’m so sorry for this preposterous position that you find yourself in and thank you for your service.

Being the president of America. You can commit crimes even be found guilty of them and still tell complet lies and get elected. Then you go on a vengeance campaign . And also become insane.
That's what I call future proof 😂

catlover123456789 · 10/05/2025 18:56

If you already do project management then I'd suggest you go down that route, in tech. People will always be needed to coordinate projects and keep them on time/budget

Social work with children, adults, mental health………… completely future proof & in great demand!

My nephew is finishing a physiotherapy degree this summer. The university has already warned them that there are very, very few jobs available.

They've recently closed my local NHS physio service.

I've been waiting for an appointment for quite a while and got the letter yesterday. I've got to go to a physio unit 19 miles away.

LakieLady · 10/05/2025 19:10

What about being a firefighter? That seems like it should be a pretty secure job, as they attend road accidents to free people and all sorts of other incidents.

Teaching, nursing, anything medical.

You migh think that, but because of the new teacher payrises being unfunded schools are making teachers redundant at the moment

Bonkers. Those are massively under threat.

Yeah this isn’t true at all.
loads of medical careers are just meat puppets.

DemocraticRepublic · 10/05/2025 19:32

I’m amazed that people are suggesting finance and accounting. They’re hugely at threat from AI.

I work in law and it’s clear that in a very short time a lot of the labour intensive, routine work undertaken by paralegals, trainees and junior lawyers is going to be done by AI.

Firms are going to have to totally re-think the whole “bill by the hour” model, and it’s clear that far fewer human lawyers will be required to do the same amount of work.

I’m hoping my seniority and experience, and the area of law I practice, will mean I’m OK. However, massive change is coming, and for the first time ever I’ve started to consider having a Plan B if the worst comes to the worst.

sugarrosepetal · 10/05/2025 19:34

Cyber security and coding for the moment but AI will take over this eventually too. The only jobs really future proof are in the funeral industry.

RavenhairedRachel · 10/05/2025 20:21

I worked 17 years as a funeral director and I can honestly say it's the one profession where not much changes.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 10/05/2025 20:24

ScholesPanda · 09/05/2025 12:55

I'd say no career is future proof because we don't know what the future holds or what new technologies might be invented or social trends develop.

But practical jobs are likely to be less vulnerable to AI and algorithms.

Last post has got it in one.

I reckon most people just don't realise what could happen when AI really hits town.

It will affect all jobs. So there will be no nice little smug or safe jobs anymore.

It will transform everything

Be Afraid. Be Very.Afraid.

Help!!?!

Suszieq · 10/05/2025 20:24

Surely tech would be one of the first industries to see Ai take over?

Coding, data etc a computer could do that I’m sure. Anything with numbers or that is heavily word based I think Ai will take over. So accountancy, journalism etc

Natsku · 10/05/2025 20:46

Hands on jobs will be safe for much longer. Things like caring, cooking, emergency services (AI will help but can't replace the physical work), nursing (actual hands on nursing can't be replaced by ai), trades etc.

While car mechanics will be doing less and less hands on work as cars become more computer-like (they are still needed though, ai can't do it all) it's not like that for aircraft mechanics, those engines need humans to work them, plus all the other parts.
