To want to burn one of each Religious text today?

JustMakingAPoint · 09/05/2025 07:54

Not because I hate or dislike them.

Not because I think burning books is good (I do not)

But because I should be able too. Because we have no Blasphemy laws and mean as it is, it’s not illegal and shouldn’t be.

And I want to do it to all of them to make the point it’s not about Islam, though it is provoked by today’s news.

This country is secular, blasphemy laws do not exist. And they shouldn’t.

if it takes every person burning a single religious book of their choosing to make the point - then I’m up for that.

I get you, OP. We have apparently brought in a blasphemy law and are punishing people for not respecting Islam. Bet you could burn a bible without any issues. Probably only one religious book you wouldn't be allowed to burn.

Thank you for the information.

MoistVonL · 09/05/2025 08:21

Seems kind of wasteful.

Couldn’t combine the pages of several into a papier mâché sculpture about unity, or cohesion, or the futility of belief or owt?

In the 80s you could get grants for that kind of stuff, you know.

Heylittlesongbird · 09/05/2025 08:23

OP have you read Fahrenheit 451? It’s really not a great look to start with the book burning.

No we haven't

Oh great. Another islam bashing thread. "It's not about Islam" yeah right. I see you.

CurlewKate · 09/05/2025 08:28

Threads like this always turn out to be stealth Islamophobia. Super tedious.

Books should never be burned. Anyone doing so is in pretty awful company - it is never about freedom, it is about bigotry. Nor is there reason to go out of ones way to offend others to defend your freedom.

And actually, like it or not, if you are in the UK the country is not secular - it has a state religion and that is the Christianity through the prism of the Church of England.

Uk? The Church of England has nothing to do with Scotland

What is this law?
Link please

I'm a religious Christian, and I wouldn't give a damn about you doing this. Burning holy scriptures, or pages from them, is actually the correct way to get rid of them (also according to Islam) so I would just think you're doing the right thing - something I would do too, as a believer of God, if I needed to toss away my Bible.

But even if you chose to do something else to holy scriptures to "provoke" religious people...most of us actually aren't going to give you a reaction, because we don't care, and understand what it is you're doing. We'd just ask ourselves what's wrong and missing from your life that you have chosen to spend your time and attention on us and our books - do you not have better things to do? Like kids to take care of? A hobby? Doing laundry? Why do you care so much about us and our reaction when we don't give a shit about you?

Yes, very true. Bishops from the Anglican Church sit in the House of Lords with an automatic right to vote on the Lords which affect us all.

Blasphemy laws were abolished in England and Wales in 2008 and in Scotland in 2024. NI has retained its blasphemy laws.

Thank you for the information.

Its not true. I'm not sure why that poster is making things up
"Blasphemy laws were abolished in England and Wales by the last Labour government’s Criminal Justice Act back in 2008, following amendments drafted by Humanists UK patrons Dr Evan Harris and Lord Avebury.
The Scottish blasphemy law was abolished by MSPs in 2021, taking effect earlier this year, following a campaign spearheaded by Humanist Society Scotland. Northern Ireland Humanists is campaigning for the abolition of blasphemy laws in Northern Ireland.

ShroudedOrchard · 09/05/2025 08:36

Unfortunately nobody cares if I burn religious texts, rather undermining my point about freedom of expression or whatever my point actually is. So I’ll post about it on MN for attention. Now I’m disappointed that nobody seems to care on MN either.

“This is not about Islam but really it is”.

Had been a few days since there was a rage baiting Islamophobic thread on here. Guess it was overdue.

User37482 · 09/05/2025 08:37

It’s about the man who has been charged for burning a koran. The problem with the charge is that there isn’t actually a law against burning books the CPS is being criticised (rightly) for even trying to prosecute this case. I think he was charged with something like harassing Islam. Which is mad because you can prosecute for harassing a person but not an ideology.

OP has a point. I think burning books is generally in bad taste and as an atheist I don’t really see the point of burning holy books BUT people do actually have a right to do so of they wish. It’s basically trying to make it an offence to burn the koran which is ridiculous. If this man had been harassing a muslim person that would have been different imo.

I think it also needs to be seen in the context of MP’s who have called for a prohibition on criticising abrahamic religions. Which is out and out calling for blasphemy laws but only for certain religions.

Arancia · 09/05/2025 08:39

Also, I'd bet my house that you don't have the cojones to actually do this, lol. It's all talk from you. Come back when you have actually done it, then you can complain about your lack of freedom to express yourself.

Go in your back garden, light a fire, and burn them … nobody will be bothered.

Stand outside a place of worship, and burn a book, in front of a load of people, Police might come along and charge you with a Public Order offence - not for the book burning, but a Breach of the Peace (as well as a fire hazard)

The man is being charged with

“intent to cause against the religious institution of Islam, harassment, alarm or distress"

Thats the problem.

OP may want to clarify what they are talking about in their introduction.

MoistVonL · 09/05/2025 08:43

Was he the one burning it outside the Turkish embassy, or was that another over-eager bloke with a boox of matches?

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 09/05/2025 08:43

You do know the Nazis burned books that weren't in line with their ideology? I think that's a lesson from history not to be repeated.

You can’t even say you are English now without getting arrested…

…something about not being able to wear crosses at work …

..then something about St George

…and I’ll finish off with “supposed to be a Christian County”

What’s the problem ? That’s exactly what he did.

Yes, I’d imagine he was “just burning a book” in the same way people outside abortion clinics are “just praying”. They aren’t. They’re trying to intimidate women accessing healthcare.

Tbh I’d kind of expect the police to be involved in some way if I set anything on fire on the street (outside of an organised permitted bonfire). I’d assume it was a public disorder thing. I, as a non-Muslim, wouldn’t want to walk past some guy burning stuff on the street.
