Does any of you have fine, straight hair, the type of hair that doesn’t really do much other than just drape there?

Plus point if it also gets oily literally in few hours.

Have you found any solutions how to make it look better?

My hair is pretty long, down to my middle back, but it doesn’t look like much because it’s so thin. I don’t want short hair, can’t have chin lenght because of my face shape, I just don’t know what do it with it, other than french braid and a bun. Waves, nevermind curls do not last, my hair just goes back to straight or gets really messy looking and products just dry up the ends.

Please help!

OP i have long, fine hair like yours that gets oily quickly. My long term solution, oddly has been to get a perm!
I go for the biggest rollers and it just looks naturally wavy. When I wash it I run a bit of curl cream through on my fingers and scrunch then let it dry naturally. It's so low maintenance. It gives so much more volume so a bun, pony etc doesn't look so limp and it looks great down too. Best part is it lifts the hair off the scalp so it lasts twice as long before needing a wash. Can't recommend it enough!

Agree that you need to cut it - clinging to having long hair is a bad idea for those of us with fine straight hair. Shoulder length is fine. And if your hair is like mine (and it sounds identical) it absolutely loves being cut.

I am toying with getting a perm - I'm too embarrassed to ask the hair dresser though!

Pomegranatecarnage · 09/05/2025 13:10

Yes, I have. After hating it for all my life I finally decided to get hair extensions eight years ago, and I’ve never looked back. I only have 50g and only shoulder length as it’s just for volume. It’s made a huge difference to me.

Now this is very interesting

Can't recommend it enough. Such a low maintenance style, if it gets frizzy I can just run my hands under the tap and re scrunch. Much bouncier ponytails, looks great half-up-half-down, more texture for a bun or French plait (plaits always looked straggly and slipped out of my straight hair). And best of all I now only have to wash every 3-4 days instead of every day or every other.

Sounds like my hair - I've been corrected by hairdressers that it's not thin, it's fine & actually heavy when long. But yeah, dark blonde, super smooth, silky, ultra shiny, greasy if you so much as look at it & a stubborn law into itself - it will do absolutely shit all.

Two of my sons have the same hair & their barbor laughs about what a pain it is to cut, but he knows how to! Unlike the hairdressers I've been to. It's now really long & I'm itching to cut it all off & dye it ginger.

Thing is I've also a contact allergy to sodium benzoate & and, really, any benzene derivatives & it's in virtually ALL hair products now, there's hardly anything I can use. If you ever see a tall, blonde middle-aged woman reading the shampoo ingredients in Boots whilst swearing under her breath... That's me.

OMG ! You absolute star !

No worries! Disclaimer to say I haven’t used that site myself but was curious as I remember liquid hair and then it vanishing! Wella did a shampoo about 30 years ago for coloured hair and it was amazing. It was of course discontinued, starting a trend with me that anything I buy twice immediately vanishes from shelves! 🤣

Have you got a picture, or a picture of the sort of style? I think this might be the solution for me too!

You can also wash your hair upside down - water changes the hair bonds much more effectively than a dryer. I've had great root lift since I started doing this years ago. I recommend Viviscal shampoo & conditioner for volume, Tigi Small Talk for thickening, spay mousse at the roots of the crown, and salt spray for hold.

Fgfgfg · 09/05/2025 19:00

This is me.
Longish, fine, greasy after 24 hours. Short hair, anything above shoulder length just looks wrong. Perms don't take properly. Can't colour my hair because I have sensitive skin.
For years Klorane Horse Chestnut shampoo was my friend. Then they discontinued it. Then I found Aveda Clove shampoo and conditioner. Just enough colour to brighten and thicken my hair without setting the sensitive scalp off, smelt lovely, and people actually said my hair looked good. About two years ago the bastards discontinued it. I spent a fortune on a litre bottle which I finished last year😩
I'm now starting to go grey and was pleased to see they were thick and wiry. I was so happy. However...they get to about 3 inches long and drop out. God knows what I'm going to look like when I'm completely grey. Albert Einstein probably.

queenofthesuburbs · 09/05/2025 19:03

Mine looks its best when it's 3-5 days "old"...If I washed it more than once a week, it would look really limp and flat.

queenofthesuburbs · 09/05/2025 19:04

Also the aveda leave in conditioner is FABULOUS at giving texture without weighing it down and smells nice too

Don't have much luck with a lot of conditioners but I might try this. Thanks.

I have thin, fine hair. I have it in a short bob but tucked behind my ears so it looks like short hair. It won’t grow very long so just looks like rats’ tails. Mine was ridiculously greasy from puberty and didn’t get any better by not washing it every day. It was long then and I could tie it back and get away with not washing every day. Didn’t make it any less greasy. As I entered peri-menopause it became less greasy but I still wash it every day as I don’t like the feel of it if I don’t.

Lamelie · 09/05/2025 19:16

My hair is greasy, needs washing every day and very flat. For a couple of years now I’ve had it bleached and a fringe cut in. It’s coursened it and I just co wash it a couple of times a week. I accept it’s marmite (dd and smil hate it, DH loves that I love it)

Dyson air wrap and i should get it cut more often!

Barney16 · 10/05/2025 00:08

Me, fine but lots of it. I stopped having mine cut because no matter how many times I said just the ends off I always ended up with layers. So now I just cut it myself. Grown out the layers mostly and it looks better. I only use Olaplex and HRT has benefited my hair massively.

Sorry I’m so late to see this! Your hair doesn’t look fine at all there - amazing, you are rocking it!
