Does any of you have fine, straight hair, the type of hair that doesn’t really do much other than just drape there?

Plus point if it also gets oily literally in few hours.

Have you found any solutions how to make it look better?

My hair is pretty long, down to my middle back, but it doesn’t look like much because it’s so thin. I don’t want short hair, can’t have chin lenght because of my face shape, I just don’t know what do it with it, other than french braid and a bun. Waves, nevermind curls do not last, my hair just goes back to straight or gets really messy looking and products just dry up the ends.

Please help!

I read Sali Hughes something about avoiding silicones and sulphates, and sure enough that does give me a bit more oomph. It’s hard to find a styling product without those, though.

FloraBotticelli · 09/05/2025 08:53

Same OP. I’m embracing it lately by growing it very long and having an occasional balayage.

I’ve stopped going to hairdressers at all and decided that I actually love my hair. Not my hairstyle, but the actual hairs that grow out of my scalp, protect my head, get to a decent length before they break, are a perfectly nice light brown colour (now with added grey) and which don’t need to be thicker, wavier, curlier, straighter, highlighted, low-lighted, texturised, volumised or treated as if they’re a problem in anyway.

I don’t have glossy red carpet tresses but my hair looks just as nice as the people I see around me in real life.

Re: oiliness, for years I only conditioned the middle and ends but I saw a thread on Reddit where others said applying it to the full length seemed to help and I have seen a bit of an improvement (but it’s more like a few extra hours, not days)

My hair is poker straight and you can't do anything with it. Nor greasy tho, I just wash once a week usually. I'm thinking if trying the colour wow products but they need to be on sale.

It's bra strap length and I have a weave for thickness. The weave is wavy so kills two birds

Edited

Could I ask how much was the weave and how long does it last and do you wash your hair like normal when you have it and can you put it up as normal? Also do you have to get it taken out professionally? Sorry for all the questions just i have really fine hair and I feel like it's getting thinner, handfuls come out every time I wash it

Jackrussellsaremad · 09/05/2025 09:10

I have fine straight hair. Obviously no conditioner or serum anywhere near the scalp (which presumably you know) and I use very lightweight products and dry my hair upside down. WOW mousse is good for all over volume.

One thing I noticed is that my hair and nails seem to grow stronger in the summer so I take a good Vitamin D supplement and that has made a massive difference. And a biotin supplement.

Shorter hair, it will take some weight off, get some layering done. You can spray it with beach hair products. Texturising Powder has always worked better than spray for lift at the roots for me. You can also try volumising shampoo.

If you like waves or curls, could you try a perm? They're back again and more gentle now and will give you volume and dry up the greasies.

My hair is silver and I had a perm recently- couldn’t be more delighted! Wash and go, no more styling or using a hairdryer, perfect!

Haveapotato · 09/05/2025 09:15

me too! mine is just below shoulder length, and I have a fringe.

my solutions are:

colour - bleaching thickens the hair ever so slightly
TiGi volumising spray and using my Babyliss Big Hair on the days that I'm bothered what my hair looks like - it doesn't give me Big Hair but it does give it a bit of a lift and the ends look nicer as it gives them a slight wave / appearance of more volume

I have never found a miracle shampoo or conditioner that actually helps and I have tried a LOT

Reallybadidea · 09/05/2025 09:18

Things that I've found have helped:

Silicone-free conditioners (this has made the biggest difference)
Sulfate-free shampoos, particularly M&S volumising shampoo
Double washing my hair and really scrubbing my scalp with my fingertips or a scalp scrubber
Tigi queen for a day spray on the roots
Got 2 b heat protector spray - weirdly makes my hair feel much thicker
Dry shampoo spray to the roots before it gets greasy.

I've managed to go from washing every day to every 3 days (4 at a push) and it looks and feels generally much thicker

Tagyoureit · 09/05/2025 09:26

Yep me!! Every day a pony tail!

Long thin, greasy within 48 hours!

Double chins won't allow a bob cut either, pixie cut would make me look like a butch lesbian and my resting bitch face would only make that worse!!

It won't hold a curly style either as it's so fly away thin so no point curling it.

I have found those fake hair buns good though. I have one that is an exact match to my hair colour so I use those a lot for an up do but they do cause tension headaches so I have to style it right, front half up and quiffed slightly, back half in a bun (very small) with remainder of the front wrapped around the bun and then the fake bun wrapped around and pinned in place.

But it's all the wispy baby hair that annoys me too!! As long as I feel like I look neat then I'm OK with it.

Swonderful · 09/05/2025 09:30

So many hair products are for dry hair and I find the clarifying shampoos too harsh - my hair actually gets more greasy.

I actually find a mild baby shampoo works well.

dontunderstandguys · 09/05/2025 09:42

My hair is thin and fine - I was getting really down about it especially when I looked at photos of me. So I've had volume extensions put in (real hair bonded to mine) and it looks so much better - I think they put too many in though I'm not used to having so much hair so next time I'll ask for less as I don't want it to be obvious (although no-one has commented just one person saying had I had a hair cut - when it's actually longer lol). It is however v expensive and I do worry about the lasting effect on my own hair.

InsolentAnnie · 09/05/2025 09:44

If it’s anything like mine, resign yourself to either sticking it up in a ponytail or using product. If I use root lifting stuff (I use Redken Guts), then use a wand to give it a slight curl and then hairspray it (VO5 ultra hold stuff in the pink and yellow can is the only thing I’ve ever found that does the job), mine can look fine all day. If it don’t do those things, it looks flat. It’s a choice I have to make!

HairsprayBabe · 09/05/2025 09:48

Me, I found that bleaching it makes it easier to style and manage, the hair strands are slightly damaged by the bleach - even when done professionally - therefore drier so it doesn't get oily as fast and it will hold a curl more and have more volume generally.

I'm 33 and have been getting highlights since I was 15, my hair is like a taylor swift old money dirty blonde naturally so going lighter is fairly easy for me.

Summerhillsquare · 09/05/2025 10:01

There was a thread where Tigi Bed Head Small Talk cream was recommended. I bought it and by god it works, volume and no grease. And on offer with boots advantage card ATM.

BlooomUnleashed · 09/05/2025 10:16

< raises hand >

It was tough in the 80s with my hair and its apparent fear of heights.

The 90s were fab for a while with Liquid Hair (Wella?), but stopped being able to find it.

It refuses to be Big Hair despite a mumsnet inspired purchase of a hairdryer thingie. Pretty sure it would work if Liquid Hair was still around.

Not that I bear grudges or anything < glares at Wella >

Whatwouldnanado · 09/05/2025 10:24

Taking collagen has helped maintain my hair since perimenopause. I have a layered shoulder length bob thing going on with a choppy fringe. I wash it every other day, style it with Pantene mousse drying it upside down. It’s ok.

WeaselsRising · 09/05/2025 10:49

I just have mine permed. Once a year is enough, just past shoulders with layers.

Chellybelle · 09/05/2025 10:58

I keep mine a couple of inches below my jaw to keep the ends non straggly and subtle layers on the sides. Both seem to add volume and texture. I wash every morning and blow dry with a bit of volumising mousse. Once my hair gets past my shoulders it's limp and flat.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 09/05/2025 11:07

I naturally have very fine, thin, greasy hair. It destroyed my confidence in my teenage years. When I started going noticeably grey in my early thirties I started dying it and suddenly it looked much better. I always got told my hair was in great condition before I started dying it, and I’m sure it’s in terrible condition now, but I don’t care because I’m no longer self conscious about it. I guess the dye strips some of the grease out and adds a layer so it’s less fine. Whatever the details of how it works, I just wish I’d known sooner.

I told DH when we had kids that if they’d inherited my hair they could dye it as young as they wanted because I wouldn’t stand by and see them suffer with self image the way I did over something that’s so easily fixable.

You may have to accept having to have your hair a bit shorter because the ends will get damaged from repeated dying, but if your hair has more body from being dyed it will look very different to how it would look shorter when it’s just limp. Honestly, hair dye is a complete game changer for me.

gumdropsandgobstoppers · 09/05/2025 11:33

I have lots of limp, thin, straight, greasy hair. It is so thin I can't even have extensions, as you can see the bump of them - the hairdresser was exasperated by my hair while trying to get the extensions in and gave up. I've just had to go short to try and get some movement.

As someone else has mentioned, I am going grey and that has really helped as the grey has some kink, so for the first time ever, if I flip my head over and dry upside down, the grey holds the shape so I get some wave and volume.

monktasmic · 09/05/2025 11:40

I have fine straight hair - I leave it to dry naturally and it just dries straight. When it’s long it can go a bit ratty. So I’ve had it chopped into a blunt jaw length bob. Which makes it look thicker and in much better condition.
I go between absolute static and straight on day one. To a greasy mess by day 2 if I don’t wash it daily. No middle ground, so I often put products in to have a messy bob day 2.

minipie · 09/05/2025 12:25

Me!

I agree with:

highlights to add volume and dry out the hair

blow dry upside down

just below shoulder length- above shoulders it hangs limply, but any longer and it looks ratty at the ends

fringe helps hide all the baby hairs and widows peak

Being on the pill helps with the oil. And thyroid boosting supplements also help (I am hypothyroid)

I am interested in all those saying they have layers. I always avoided layers as I thought there wouldn’t be enough hair left in the longer layers and it would look really thin at the ends?

OriginalUsername2 · 09/05/2025 12:45

Me. I used to get great results from using mousse and then blow drying my hair upside-down. Then throughout the day I’d flip it forward and back when I had a moment to myself to give it a boost again.

I’ve got too many baby / broken hairs for this to work anymore unfortunately, I just look all fluffy! But it did me well for a couple of decades.

SilviaSnuffleBum · 09/05/2025 12:48

One of my 7 year olds has hair like this.
Hers is in a long bob.
I only wash it once a week and use a child friendly dry shampoo betwixt washes, otherwise it looks greasy and minging.
