In a dispute with my employer (direct discrimination which they have admitted). I’m currently off sick with the stress from all that’s happened the last few months. I now have an interview with another company but only have my work computer to join the interview on teams. Will I get into trouble if I do this when off sick? Will they know?

Can you not use Teams on your phone?

Ponoka7 · 07/05/2025 17:48

If it's against their policies over usage, you've given them ammunition against you. If it is a sackable offence, they won't hesitate.

Swiftie1878 · 07/05/2025 17:54

Use your phone or borrow a laptop.

11thofNever · 07/05/2025 17:56

You can set up a new basic teams account if you have a mircrosoft account. Go to get teams for free and set up a new teams account.

Edited to add link.

You should probably set up a new one if that one is connected with/set-up by your work.

stichguru · 07/05/2025 18:02

Unless you have either

  • an IT acceptable usage policy which specifically states you can use work's laptop for non-work things
  • written permission from work to do this.
JUST DON'T

It's likely that they don't want you to use your laptop for any non-work things, and it's likely they don't really want you applying for new jobs. They maybe able to see what you are running on your laptop, don't go down the route of doing something they probably don't want you to do in a way that could break company policy and give them a potential way of tracking you doing it.

FloraBotticelli · 07/05/2025 18:03

I wouldn’t risk it. Just do it on your phone.

TheOrphanTree · 07/05/2025 18:04

I found doing interviews on my phone really easy. I had my laptop nearby with notes on. It wasn't any worse than doing it on the laptop. Good luck!

I found it awful on phone, akward and it's hard to get the right angle, unless you have a phone tripod maybe?

Or set it up set it up so it is resting on the laptop maybe?

I literally stacked random objects to the right height and used blue tac as my stand 🤣 Not sophisticated but it worked perfectly!

Hallywally · 07/05/2025 21:29

You can’t be too ill to work but interviewing with another company on your work laptop. If they find out you’ll get sacked.

This. And used a phone stand. Use it all the time when work from home as just easier for teams meetings

Calmdownpeople · 07/05/2025 21:33

Very dodgy ground. Why on earth would you possibly give your employer ammunition against you And totally right about being off sick and interviewing. Playing with fire I think.

ScaryM0nster · 07/05/2025 21:35

Most it equipment use policies would rule this out.
If you’re in dispute you don’t want to be the wrong side of that.

Phones work. If necessary, join the teams meeting on a laptop if there’s screen share stuff and do the audio on the phone.

That's a good tip! Not what I thought of when my laptop did a massive update and I was holding my phone over my head and I was trying to sort of look like an insta model Blush

WhatHaveIJustRead · 08/05/2025 00:56

I think everyone is being a bit over the top here. I’ve used my work laptop for a 7 stage interview process recently (7 stages! 🙄)

Join Teams in an incognito browser… how the hell are they to know? I think you, and everyone else who has commented, are totally overthinking it.

Best of luck with the interview x

How exactly would this be any different? Unless she works for MI5 I’m pretty sure they’re not monitoring her audio activity on her laptop 🙄

TempestTost · 08/05/2025 01:01

You could check and see if your local library has a computer, or tablet ,that you could use. Probably you'd need to do it in the library but there might be a room you could book.

@WhatHaveIJustRead thanks, I was going to login to my own personal teams on a web browser and then delete the history… what do you think?

luckylavender · 08/05/2025 10:55

Don't risk this. Deleted items can always be recovered.

Yes, I would absolutely do this without a second thought and I work in a very tech orientated business.

You know your current company best… will they really be bothered going back to recover deleted browsing history ti see if you’ve been applying/interviewing for other positions? I personally think the idea a company would do this is preposterous

WhatHaveIJustRead · 08/05/2025 11:59

And to all those saying use Teams on a phone… that’s highly unprofessional for an interview. The screen shows differently when joining from a phone and if an interviewee of mine (of which I’ve had many) did this it would be a black mark straight away

Bjorkdidit · 08/05/2025 12:03

If they want you to do anything like a presentation or screen sharing, I'm not sure that would work either.
