Help me with brunch menu

Hosting mine and my boyfriend’s family - they are meeting for first time.

We have decided to do a brunch as it suits everyone’s schedules. We have one veggie coming and their partner tends to eat veggie but can eat meat.

The menu:

  • Quiche x2 (one veggie, one non-veggie)
  • Breakfast potatoes (dad’s absolute fav)
  • Sausages (veg and non veg)
  • Bacon
  • Dressed avocado
  • Fruit salad
  • Muffins (sis will bake a selection)
  • Pastries (will buy a frozen bag)
  • Coffee
  • Bucks Fizz
  • OJ

Im thinking one fresher element may be nice but I think a salad doesn’t quite hit the mark.

Any feedback would be great!

I have chosen the above as I can do a lot of the prep well beforehand and just leave bf to not burn sausages/bacon

Sautéed mushrooms? Delicious with thyme and breakfasty. Or grilled tomatoes if not too tomato-y for you. Sautéed spinach is also nice.

Oh I think I found my veg side! Sounds delish. Thanks!

Appreciate all the suggestions

I think it sounds really great OP...this is a brunch I would love. So I wouldn't need to feel the need to change it but these are my minor thoughts FWIW....

To save work I would maybe do just one veggie quiche rather than a meat one as well.

Also wary that you'll need a lot of potatoes and avocado for a large number of people.

You could always check with the veggie as to their thoughts on quiche/veggie sausages if you've not done so.

I presume you have tea bags in just in case!

Hope it goes well.

Aside from frozen pastries and the muffins, I feel like it’s missing a non-sweet bready carb – quiche is niche, not appealing to everyone and to my mind a bit out of place. I’d do smoked salmon, cream cheese and bagels. Or Dutch baby pancakes to go with the fruit salad or bacon. Greek yoghurt is a good shout – full-fat Fage! (It’s possible I’m hungry.)

What’s the recipe for breakfast potatoes – are they like home fries? I LOVE brunch potatoes in all forms. Serve hot sauce! (It’s possible I’ve forgotten the purpose of this brunch.)

If I was eating a brunch , I'd skip breakfast and if it was a good one , it'd do me most of the day .
As a vegetarian (but not a fan of eggs personally )

Quiche - either pepper and mushroom ( roast these first otherwise the quiche is soggy ) or wilted spinach with garlic herb Philly ( plus eggs and cheddar ) and some wholegrain mustard . Quiche is always better the next day so ideal to make ahead

Toast (get a nice fresh loaf)
Salad - could be fruit , lots in season now .
Muffins and pastries

TBH , if I was invited over to someones house for brunch , I'd be a bit sad to be changed for a brunch out , ( unless they were a dreadful cook !)

Richmond sausages (vegetarian ones ) are the best I've tried (much nicer than Quorn or Linda Macartney ) I don;t like things are taste "meaty" so not a fan of "Beyond Meat"

I did a brunch today (DD insisted ) we had hash browns , Richmond sausage and streaky bacon (vegetarian) beans , DD and DH had fried eggs .
Lots of coffee and orange juice .

I’m veggie and I’ve love that… but what are breakfast potatoes, please, and do I need them in my life?

It’s interesting that responses to threads like this always fall into 2 camps-the “do anything that makes it easier” camp, (represented here at the extreme end by the “go out for brunch” group!) and the “this looks like fun!” camp suggesting 427 other things to add to the feast. Putting myself firmly in the second camp, how about Glamorgan Sausages as a vegetarian, but not vegan option? So much nicer than any of the bought ones.https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/glamorgan_sausages_with_64911

Quiche doesn’t go and I’d definitely want mushrooms.

But the main thing is you don’t say anything about “tomato forward food” in front of your boyfriend’s parents 🤣

slamdunk66 · 06/05/2025 10:26

I’d do some scrambled eggs and maybe a selection of cold meats.

I like quiche, but rarely when I see it on a buffet - savoury egg slice avoids beige pastry.
You can make it with pretty much any vegetables you fancy - I love it with mushrooms that have been in truffle oil - and cook it well in advance.
You need to shorten the cooking time, but also works well made as savoury muffins.
Courgette savoury slice | Second Nature Guides

I love this, though I prefer it made without the flour and I cook the courgette and spring onion gently in a frying pan first with half of the olive oil. It's absolutely delicious.

24Dogcuddler · 07/05/2025 20:46

Sounds lovely
How about seeded bagels toasted with cream cheese and peaches
Grilled/ baked/air fryer halloumi with pineapple.

Have you tried making these and leaving for more than 30 mins please? Eg making Sunday afternoon and eating them Monday night?

Alwaystired23 · 07/05/2025 22:03

I'd add toast, Mushrooms, grilled tomato's and maybe some pancakes with some spreads.

that's interesting - I took a small portion out once before I added the flour to make a mini gluten-free version. Gluten free woman said it was nice, hadn't occurred to me to leave the flour out altogether.
depending what vegetables I'm using I often oven bake them first to remove some of the moisture.

minnienono · 07/05/2025 22:50

Mushrooms?

minnienono · 07/05/2025 22:53

I’d do frittata rather than quiche as it goes better, easy to make ahead, id just do veggie ones as plenty of meat separately. I’d consider making homemade beans, so much better than tinned

bigboykitty · 07/05/2025 23:00

I'm just hear for the breakfast potato intel...

Iwiicit · 07/05/2025 23:12

Yeah, c'mon and explain the breakfast potatoes. I've got work early tomorrow but I need to know.

Westuh · 08/05/2025 11:30

Breakfast potatoes are just cubed potatoes parboiled then sautéed in a frying pan with herbs and spices

I believe it’s American. I like to use onion powder, garlic powder (fresh ingredients just don’t work as well ime), cayenne, smoked paprika, chilli flakes, loads of black pepper and dried thyme. Some chopped spring onion on the top is lovely. If have a spare sweet pepper that needs using up I will also chuck it in.

Tbh they are always good even if I change up what I put on them. LOADS of butter is key I think. And you want them to be crunchy on the outside.

Lovely with a fried egg and beans. Chilli oil drizzled on top.

I don’t think it all goes together - quiche and potatoes is ok and bacon, sausages and potatoes is ok, but quiche and avocado doesn’t really work as a meal and I don’t think you need pastries and fruit salad with all that hot food as well. It feels a bit like you’re trying to hard tbh! I’d either do a fry up type breakfast, fruit and pastries, or something like smoked salmon and eggs / avocado on bagels / sourdough. You don’t need to lay on a full
hotel buffet breakfast!

A fry up will be stressful to do in the morning. I want things we can prep in advance and just warm in an oven. I am trying hard. I’m hosting an important occasion!

Ive decided on:

quiche x 2
breakfast potatoes
sauteed spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes
sausages
bacon

pastries
muffin

toast
Selection of jams

tea
coffee
oj
bucks fizz

You’re basically doing a free up minus the eggs though!!

for some reason it seems more doable the way I’m doing it. Eggs done well for 12 people just seems stressful

Will do the quiche, veg and potato prep the night before. Bf will sort out sausages and bacon in the oven the morning of. Keep everyone topped up.

I will just have to fry off some potatoes and sautee the veg. Not hard for me.

Skip the quiche and the veggie sausages and make sure the sausages you have are GF.
Frittata
Continental cheese, sliced meats, hard boiled eggs and rye bread
Selection of tea
Apple juice for those that don’t like orange (very acidic)
Yoghurt
