Help me with brunch menu

Westuh · 05/05/2025 15:55

Hosting mine and my boyfriend’s family - they are meeting for first time.

We have decided to do a brunch as it suits everyone’s schedules. We have one veggie coming and their partner tends to eat veggie but can eat meat.

The menu:

  • Quiche x2 (one veggie, one non-veggie)
  • Breakfast potatoes (dad’s absolute fav)
  • Sausages (veg and non veg)
  • Bacon
  • Dressed avocado
  • Fruit salad
  • Muffins (sis will bake a selection)
  • Pastries (will buy a frozen bag)
  • Coffee
  • Bucks Fizz
  • OJ

Im thinking one fresher element may be nice but I think a salad doesn’t quite hit the mark.

Any feedback would be great!

I have chosen the above as I can do a lot of the prep well beforehand and just leave bf to not burn sausages/bacon

What are breakfast potatoes?

LittleBitofBread · 05/05/2025 16:19

And, if instead of the quiche you want something more obviously eggy, you could do a baked omelette. Easy to make as you just shove it in the oven and leave it, and it can stay in there keeping warm.

Well, on this thread you tell the OP several times to go out. Why do you think this?

I think it sounds delicious! I like the idea of adding in smoked salmon and cream cheese somewhere.

Talipesmum · 05/05/2025 16:24

Love the menu. I like pp suggestion of berries and Greek yog - v easy, no prep needed. Or if you’d prefer less sweet, cucumber and tomato cut up sort of chunky would be easy to pop on the side of the plate to lighten it up a bit - I think avoiding leaves makes it less “salady”.

Also I think it’s nicer to host brunch like this at home rather than going out - not everyone has a “nice little brunch place” round the corner, and it’s more relaxed at home, especially since you’ve chosen easy to prep in advance type things. And it lets your families see you and your OH working together on something, which is nice 😀. It does make it extra important to be prepared and not flapping, so you can enjoy the morning and chat to people, but your menu works well for that. Make sure the fridge is good and clear ahead of time so you can have it all stashed in there in nice bowls, not teetering behind all the jars etc. And bacon cooks really well in the oven on a baking tray, as do sausages - much easier than faffing with the grill.

Yes, that is much clearer. You could've explained it somewhat less unpleasantly and snarkily, but hey, if that's how you get your kicks.…

olympicsrock · 05/05/2025 16:31

Mushrooms and grilled tomatoes with rosemary salt and pepper

Staysexyanddontgetmurdered · 05/05/2025 16:32

You could do some avocado toast for a 'salady' option which is still breakfast. Maybe with red onion/ feta cheese.

EasterBunnyFeelingFunny · 05/05/2025 16:35

Oh now I really fancy a bagel with smoked salmon. Sigh.

ThinWomansBrain · 05/05/2025 16:35

I like quiche, but rarely when I see it on a buffet - savoury egg slice avoids beige pastry.
You can make it with pretty much any vegetables you fancy - I love it with mushrooms that have been in truffle oil - and cook it well in advance.
You need to shorten the cooking time, but also works well made as savoury muffins.

This is a great recipe for a quick and easy lunch, breakfast or snack on the go. It keeps well, and you can even freeze it.

But they’re not planning on grilling tomatoes or frying eggs. They were after easy suggestions that could be to a large extent prepared in advance - that’s why she chose the things she has done.

It would also be a lot cheaper to host by cooking.

@Westuh agree with @Chewygummy

"Go out to a really nice local brunch place then back to your for coffee in the garden"

Families meeting first time and you and your bf will be running around hosting, leaving "strangers" to engage in small talk.

Unless ofc both families are massively gregarious (unlike myself) 😆

p.s. the menu sounds delicious (wouldn't bother with veggie sausages though, they're generally vile)

Richmond or Couldron are the only decent ones in my opinion

I would do frittata rather than quiche and definitely a platter of smoked salmon, some cream cheese, bagels and some grilled asparagus!

Ilovelurchers · 05/05/2025 16:43

It's a lovely idea. Some other nice things would be:

A big bowl of good natural yogurt and various fruits/compotes/honeys etc people can add to it.

Lovely sourdough bread with jams and honey and stuff to add.

Pancakes? (Again with choice of yoghurt, fruit, honey, Nutella, maple syrup and bacon to top it with. Maybe ice-cream could be available too?)

In terms of the drinks,, here are some ideas:
cold sparkling water
a choice of teas (at least breakfast and early grey - and maybe green tea and or a fruit tea?)
Choice of nice coffees and stuff like cream, syrups etc to add.
Maybe some real home made hot chocolateafe with actual chocolate. With a load of marshmallows and stuff for people to add if they want to.

Wonderberry · 05/05/2025 16:45

Sautéed mushrooms? Delicious with thyme and breakfasty. Or grilled tomatoes if not too tomato-y for you. Sautéed spinach is also nice.

PeloMom · 05/05/2025 16:46

2 quiches is too much. Some sort of eggs would be better. Otherwise is very carb heavy.

ETA. I agree is better if you go to a nice brunch place - with the cost of everything you intend to do will be the same or even cheaper and you don’t have to kill yourself first thing in the morning.

I served my meat-eating partner some of the Tesco Plant Chef Cumberland bangers yesterday and he didn't even realise my sleight of hand until I 'fessed up! If you like the taste of meat sausages these are the "meatiest" ones I have found.

Cauldron are also great I think, maybe taste even nicer, though less meat-like.

I think the Richmond vegan ones are really decent to be fair so would say it depends on the brand! OP @Westuh just a tip

Ooh yes, what about a lot of lovely big field mushrooms cooked in butter, thyme and garlic.

And spinach is lovely too - either creamy and garlicky, or lemon if you want something sharper.

Bollindger · 05/05/2025 16:50

I would go for things you can cook I the oven, so your not hot and sweaty.
Quiche is so nice hot, and you could do new potatoes, add some butter and herbs and just serve at the same time.
Add French bread, butter, cheeses and pickles.

Orange and lemonade as a soft drink.
Set up a tray with milk , sugar and sweeteners, then bring in black coffee and tea, ask people to add as required.

IButtleSir · 05/05/2025 16:54

You cannot have brunch without eggs! (Yes, I know there are eggs in quiche, but it's not the same.)
