PerkyOchrePeer · 04/05/2025 23:14

I had a dirty phone call this evening to my mobile and it was from private number I was going to report it but there's no point because you can't trace it because he was a private number he was whispering. I did speak back and said who is this and he just repeated his obscenities to me then I hang up and he phoned back didn't speak I hung up he tried again didn't speak I hang up and I haven't heard from him since

What is the AIBU?

Empress13 · 05/05/2025 06:24

don’t understand what you’re asking ? Surprised they didn’t withhold number?

mepipesneedlagging · 05/05/2025 06:30

Don't answer withheld numbers. Ever.

Tomikka · 05/05/2025 06:33

@PerkyOchrePeer
You cannot trace back to a witheld number, but the source can be traced by the networks

If you don’t report then nobody will attempt to trace it

HaveCreditWillShop · 05/05/2025 06:34

I thought I was getting dirty phone calls recently as all I could hear was breathing and clicks and laughing. Thought it was some little b*$tards on a pay phone. I hung up. They phoned back and I loudly and confidently said “YOU’VE reached the sexy good time sex chat line, charged at £10 a minute, do you accept the charge?” There was a pause …. Then the guy said “Madam your Vodaphone contract is coming to an end, I’m calling about our upgrade offers” ……

The problem is even though you say I should report it to stop him doing it to somebody else if the number is not revealed how can they trace who it is he's just going to do it again into gain and if somebody calls you and it says on your screen private number he could be from this country he could be from abroad how would you ever be able to find that out well find out where he was calling from and who he was just a complete waste of time so just leave it and he will soon get bored because what he wants is some kind of response

Oh god, the police aren’t going to do anything.

Dont answer numbers you don’t know. If you do and they’re weirdos, hang up and move on with your life

The point is you hear about these things but you never think it will happen to you so it was a bit of a shock but they are probably just teenagers with nothing else better to do

The only thing I would say is that it could be potentially dangerous because these people do not know who they are ringing and all they hear is a female at the other end. What if the person is elderly and has a heart condition and get so frightened that they end up having a heart attack and I know a couple of women who are in their 80s who have mobile phones

At the very least block the number.

Those saying 'never answer a number you don't recognise' - that rules out a good many calls from the NHS, care-related (I have an elderly Mum) and recently the police (in relation to something I reported). I can't just not answer in case it's to do with my Mum.

Don't answer withheld numbers. Ever.

That'd mean not replying to doctors, emergency services, govt departments and many, many more legitimate places... 🙄

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 05/05/2025 10:06

Generally, if it’s that important they will leave a voicemail or follow up with an email or even ring again shortly afterwards.

Pervs don’t generally, I would imagine, persist in calling a singular random number.

Don't answer withheld numbers. Ever.

That’s such bad advice.

Lanzarotelady · 05/05/2025 10:11

Did you not just laugh and put the phone down and carry on with your day?

Talk about an over reaction! So frightened they have a heart attack are you normally so melodramatic?

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 05/05/2025 10:13

Scammers often use withheld numbers. If you pick up, your number then goes on to a list that your number is “live”, real and has a potential victim on the other end. Your number then gets spammed more and probably sold on to other scammers to call you, clone you etc etc

shellyleppard · 05/05/2025 10:14

@PerkyOchrePeer just block the number and report as spam??

When the person rang me he rang three times in succession the first time he spoke and the subsequent two times he just was silent and on the third occasion I said to him I'm calling the police and he never rang back

So, he did the dirty phone call on the first go and you still picked up a further two times?

So then report it if you feel so strongly? Your network provider will be able to trace it even if it’s withheld for you. I understand this dirty little perv has shaken you up, but it’s some loser with not much on this weekend. If they phoned my Mother In Law who is well into her 80’s, she’d give them a run for their money!!

How an earth do you block a private number I did try that and it doesn't work there has to be an actual number for you to block

You’re being ridiculous. Nobody is going to have a heart attack over a dirty phone call. Women in their 80s will almost certainly have had them on landlines when they were younger. They’re not Victorians.

Nobody wants to answer the phone to a heavy breathing pervert, and I’m sorry you had that experience, but let’s not get melodramatic.
