Come on mumsnet, creep my lifestyle!

Inspired by the personal stylist post - I’m wondering what is the best thing you’ve bought for yourself?

Mine has 100% been my peloton and all the dumbbells. First exercise I’ve ever stuck to!

OP posts:

A new mattress and pillow.

What I don't like about the idea of laser hair removal is actually killing something on my body ... can anyone argue against?

What would you do if you got headlice, or scabies?

Private HRT specialist. Amazing, changed my life after two years of being fobbed off.

Please tell more.

A standing desk. Literally changed my life. I have a desk based business/job and put on several stones due to being sedentary for 8 hours per day. Now I stand most of the day, I’ve lost 8 stones in weight, no longer suffer back and joint pain, reversed t2 diabetes and no longer have high blood pressure.

Intrigued. How does a standing desk help you lose so much weight? Are you exercising while standing?

crystalize · 05/05/2025 19:45

@ZeldaFighter Absolutely. I used to do once a week at my gym but it was only doing it more regularly I noticed my core getting really strong... and my arse ha! I do average about 5 days a week but also walk a lot.

Doing pilates at home on YouTube. At 55 I never thought i could get so toned and fit... Ive got strong abs now and toned arms! It helps to ease my achy back and stiffness. I used to go the the gym but for me, pilates beats it hands down for results.

Please share the video you use.

lens replacement surgery. about £8k but worth every penny.

Is there a delay in focusing with the lense please and where did you have it done?

No delay at all. You can see perfectly immediately. Just research ophthalmic surgeons in your area.

I love how people proudly say 'University'. Aye, right. Please remember that bus drivers were taxed so you could get your degrees. Investment, my arse.

That's a bit mean. Of course university is not just an investment by participants. I don't think anyone is saying that. Something can receive investment from.more than one place. Completing a degree does require lots of individual investment, financially and in terms of time and effort. I am.thankful for my education but I also put lots in myself. I guess this mutual investment began when I was 4 and started school. The difference about university is that it required considerable financial sacrifice whereas school did not.
If it's any consolation to you, my education took me into medical research and then teaching. Both of these serve a valuable role in our society.

Personal trainer. She got me started on the exercise bug. I cannot go more than a day without weights and running. I feel much younger and the menopause has not hit me as badly as other people I know.

Wallywobbles · 05/05/2025 20:35

@Jacarandillplease tell me what you do with those 10 mins of Pilates.

Best investment - my pension & ISA. Oh and investing in buying property at auction & renovating a few times over. Now 39 & could retire.

Read financial books & blogs & gave me the confidence to negotiate my salary to double what I was on in two years, spend intentionally and invest the rest, started small paid off debts and suddenly in a position to lose £200k on the markets just because Trumps acts the idiot (ok he always acts the idiot!).

That gives me time to do the other lovely things:

reformer pilates
read books (library mostly)
declutter and simplify our home over time
connecting with family

I guess I think from this thread I could lose weight and maybe laser my legs to save having to shave the odd time. But then I remembered my daughters look up to me and as long as I’m healthy the skin I’m in is a gift. 🎁

RobertaFirmino · 05/05/2025 20:46

The best money I ever spent on myself was £20, seven years ago. I bought a refillable vape pen and never smoked another cigarette since. The vape has long gone but I remain a non smoker.

Mamajustwingingit · 05/05/2025 21:05

A good mattress, topper, duvet and pillows. My bed is like a cloud and we spend so much of our lives sleeping!

& Pilates, helps my mental health and keeps me toned!

Weight loss jabs and Botox

Same. People no longer ask me what I'm angry about when I'm not angry about anything (thanks to Botox), I look years younger and it's fixed my tooth grinding and jaw pain. People actually like me more; they always used to think I was scowling at them.

Early days with Mounjaro, but so far it's like having a new brain. I try to put aside the thought that if the stuff had been invented 30 years earlier, I could have had a whole other life.

That sounds amazing! Can you recommend the books / blogs you read?
my industry doesn’t have a huge amount of earning power but I’m doing a data apprenticeship at the moment which I hope will improve my prospects.

How do you know where they were educated? I studied abroad on a part scholarship, my parents paid the rest. I paid for my masters completely again abroad and not in the UK. I am glad I invested the time and some of my money and very grateful to my parents for the help too. Not sure what any bus drivers had to do with it! And everyone is taxed, why should bus drivers not be taxed?! 🤨

IslandsAround · 05/05/2025 21:18

@Uninspiredusername - I would start with a book called your money or your life… it’s a bit old but good principles and helps you understand how much money you need to just stay still - ie to maintain a lifestyle as a lawyer - you need fancy suits and a particular postcode & commute loads so reduces your hourly rate so basically you work half the week to break even!

There are lots of blogs but I’d check out Mr Money Mustache - he was a computer engineer if I remember (so not a million miles from data) but retired in his early 30s and now his investments probably make him half a mil a year…..

I should read more but once I got basics and kept a net worth spreadsheet-it all went from there. Slowly and slowly and then suddenly accelerated.

I know my life would have been very different too. The Botox allows me to deal with “the stupid” without my inner feelings being expressed on my face🤣🤣

I’ve been thinking of starting but there are hundreds to choose from!

Joining a running club and doing their couch to 5k course, continuing to run with the club. Haven't lost any weight but it's been great for my mental health.

Lazer eye surgery

Based on this thread I’ve booked consultation for lens replacement. Apparently it is straightforward these days. It would be 8k for 2 eyes. It seems very expensive. I do have varifocal glasses though. Is that the experience of others or should I look around.
