Come on mumsnet, creep my lifestyle!

Inspired by the personal stylist post - I’m wondering what is the best thing you’ve bought for yourself?

Mine has 100% been my peloton and all the dumbbells. First exercise I’ve ever stuck to!

No idea why such a lovely thread can decend into arguments over uni fees 🙄

For me it's the money I've spent on travel and holidays, every single one is a memory I will treasure, they mean the world to me.

Time wise I have invested a lot into reading self help, inspirational and motivational books. I can now process things different, I live a lot happier, it feels similar to therapy.

The investment is the time and massive effort it takes. The sacrifice of earning in the time it takes.

I see what you are saying and disagree that it is a massive effort and sacrifice of earning. Standard hard work is not a massive effort - it is standard hard work. Sacrifice of not earning the minimum wage? What else will they earn at 18? Only the bare minimum. But this is beside the point.

All I was saying - don't call somebody else's money YOUR investment. That is all I was saying.

You can say 'my investment' into education if you save up for a number of years and then enrol in an US uni on full fees - but this is an unlikely scenario. This was all I was saying.

Oh FFS. Can you not just stop. You are ruining an otherwise lovely thread.

Weight loss injections, life changing.

Helped me lose a significant amount of weight over the last year, off two medications I no longer need, blood pressure normal, more mobile and starting to exercise again.

Was about to say much the same thing. So glad I did it.

How did you find a good therapist? I started earlier this year with one I found through BetterHelp but, to be blunt, didn’t find him clever/insightful enough and sacked it off!

Hi @HeyItsPickleRick I am a therapist and I finally have an excellent therapist of my own, so I have some suggestions. Always use a reliable directory, such as the Counselling Directory, Psychotherapy Today or the BACP website to source a therapist, as you have to provide your credentials to be listed on any of those platforms. Make a shortlist of a small number of potential candidates in your area, by reading profiles, see which profiles appeal to you. Many therapists are happy to do a free consultation (usually up to 30 minutes) so ask about this and have a good chat with at least a couple of people. One of the most important elements of therapy, and something that I truly believe helps you to get good results, is forming a good connection with your therapist. I'm not saying that's possible in a short chat, but you will get a sense of who these people are, what their personal approach is, whether you feel safe and comfortable talking to them, and could build a good connection with them, and that's a good place to start!
Good therapy can change your life, improve your relationships, particularly your most important relationship, the one with yourself, and in my experience, rarely do people regret starting this journey. Good luck!

I am only answering the questions, directly addressed to me? Is this not allowed?

Well technically of course it’s allowed but is it really necessary in this context? The saying ‘just because you can, doesn’t mean you should’ springs to mind.

DrPrunesqualer · 05/05/2025 14:15

Ok
So I won’t say going to Uni then. I won’t say the Bachelors and Masters and Professional qualifications got me out of poverty and having to scrimp and save like my parents and ancestors before me.

So
What 🤔
Glasses…..good ones so I can see
Learning to drive
Children and their education. They are our life’s joy.
Surrounding myself with artwork I love.
Never sunbathing and always using sun lotion because at 58 I really don’t have any wrinkles, fine lines or bags….(it will hit me one day but not yet )
Eating healthily and being a vegetarian for 45ish yrs. It makes me happy and that’s what life is all about.

Whatever makes you happy is a good investment in yourself. Who cares what others think

Katyrosebug · 05/05/2025 14:18

A gastric band, I privately for mine in the UK. Best thing I ever did, completely changed my life

ShapedLikeAPastry · 05/05/2025 14:18

It would be great if people stopped feeding the goady fucker who posts inflammatory shit all over MN daily.

As for me...
Braces (although I do need to invest in teeth whitening now) means I smile more!
Camper van - so much fun to drive and gives you a real sense of freedom
Perfume collection - I have wayyyyyy too much but it's a little bit of joy/self-care every morning

On Instagram:

Rachael Attard
Paola Pilates
Jennie Sonderlind
Hilal Leigh Pilates
Ashely DeLeon Pilates

I use the free stuff on Instagram for ideas for routines but there are probably full videos you can pay for on YouTube.

You only need to do 10 mins a day to see real results to your body.

On Youtube, Isa Welly is so lovely for beginner/ intermediate Pilates, and you can then upgrade to Move with Nicole, which has excellent content for all styles/ levels.
Both explain really well how to do the movements to get the most out of them. 15/20mn 4 times a week will bring great results in terms of fitness and general wellbeing!

worldwidetravel2017 · 05/05/2025 14:19

Spent a fair bit on gel nails over the years but makes me feel good

Fact remains, degrees are heavily subsidised, students pay a fraction of what it really costs - ask any international student what they pay and then realise that the 'investment in myself' was a massive charity donation on the part of tax payers.

The bus driver certainly isn’t funding anyone’s university degree unless he or she is earning over £41k a year, the point at which you are generally a net contributor to the system.

University graduates also pay tax after graduation. International students won’t pay taxes in the UK if they go home when they graduate, so higher fees are in lieu of their contribution later in their career.

Dyson Air wrap hairdryer and Dyson air strait both absolutely game changers. I can style hair to make it look bouncy and swishy or straight. Love em

Can I ask what differences did you find once you had recovered from surgery?
I am so frustrated by working my core and feeling I am engaging them well but when I stand up my abdomen looks like it falls forward from just under my ribs. I find it makes all my clothes look like the fit really badly (I know this is a first world problem but it really annoys me!).

Everything is flat now and all my organs are now neatly tucked back inside. I had a 6cm gap. Despite having a 6-pack through rigorous exercise, I still looked 5 months pregnant in clothes, thanks to the DR.

Now, this is a genuine investment - paying for yourself.

My professional qualification was entirely self funded as I already had a degree and postgraduate qualification. It took me 9 years to pay the debt off but it's enabled my self employment.
