Will she get sick from eating this and AIBU for being a little pissed off?

I had a hospital appointment yesterday and couldn’t take DD with me (she has autism and doesn’t cope in hospital environments).

I left her at home, with my grandparents (early 70’s, still fit and active, etc) and my sister (28 years old). She is quite easy to look after, as she just goes off and does her own thing and only really needs supervising.

I spoke to my grandparents today who said that she was complaining that the chicken in the fridge was spicy yesterday when she was eating it. I then realised that these (linked below) were what she was talking about and that all 3 of them have let DD eat it raw!

I did get a little bit pissed off because firstly, it’s obviously a packet of chicken that needs cooking and it says it right on the front. Secondly, DD kept telling them that it needed cooking and they just ignored her and thought they knew better.

Will this make her sick and unwell? She ate I would say maybe a small filet of it? And AIBU for being pissed off at all 3 of them for making such a stupid mistake and not checking properly?

Well it’s not the exact same but it is part of the same range sat side by side on the shelf, they have buttermilk, hot & spicy or Tempura - I can’t imagine that one would be cooked and one would raw.

I'll have to have a look next time I'm in. If the chicken is raw the tempura batter would be extremely runny...so that doesn't make sense either tbh.

i would have expected her to have had diarrhea last night soon after eating it, has she been fine?

It can take days for this to happen if she gets campylobacter.

AthWat · 04/05/2025 13:41

FGSWhatMoreCanISay · 04/05/2025 13:19

That's not raw so she'll be fine. It's clearly already cooked, you can see it's cooked in the photo.

The photo is of it cooked, ffs, as it is on all packet photos!

FGSWhatMoreCanISay · 04/05/2025 13:42

Uhm no the photo of the packet shows cooked batter on the pieces inside the packet! Not the sleeve...obviously.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 04/05/2025 13:43

It looks like the batter has been cooked already but reading the "store at bottom of fridge" implies it is a raw product.
Trio of idiots you have there op

I think she would have shown signs of food poisoning by now 🤑

AquaPeer · 04/05/2025 13:43

Not the point but I think that is a bizarre product- i presume the photo on the front nothing like the way they look in the packet? Because marinated breadcrumbed raw chicken seems like a weird thing to sell.

they look like they’ve already been deep fried so it seems logical they just need oven heating. I don’t know how they would even be nice if raw, marinaded and breadcrumbed but not deep fried. Who oven bakes that kind of chicken? they won’t be crispy or seared.

but all that aside- the vast majority of chicken doesn’t have salmonella or other nasty. I think from a high quality supply chain it’s even less likely. Fingers crossed she’s ok.

I’m not sure they’re that idiotic to be fair, when we’re all struggling to understand them. They are a weird product

AthWat · 04/05/2025 13:44

friendsonly · 04/05/2025 13:21

Or they just presumed a 9 year old would be able to take a snack out of the fridge in her own home? And not chose to eat raw meat?

You missed the stuff about the child saying she thought it needed cooking and all the adults telling her no, it didn't, then?

FGSWhatMoreCanISay · 04/05/2025 13:44

Anyway I shall check for myself. Unless the tempura pack is full of runny tempura batter, the chicken in that packet will already be cooked through as well. But until I've checked for myself we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Because she’s autistic and is constantly being told it’s fine by adults she trusts? Don’t compare NT and ND children

Oh ffs!
🤦🏻‍♀️

The batter can't be cooked without the chicken being cooked too as that would be a huge risk for food poisoning. So yes, it's very confusing to have the instruction to keep at bottom of fridge. What madness is this ALDI??

Peakcentral · 04/05/2025 13:48

Why do the posters in these threads never just pop to the shops to buy another pack and check if the meat in the product is actually raw (which I very much doubt it is)?

That would be my first action, were I so desperately worried that my child had been exposed to salmonella.

Honestly, it's not cooked. That's how batter looks on frozen or chilled uncooked chicken. I don't know how they process it to get the batter like this, but the chicken is uncooked. I can assure you of this. Of course there are some which are cooked, and you can eat straight from the packet, and they will always say so on the packet.

Shes not asking if it was raw, she knows it was. It's loads of other people who are insisting it isn't. The OP is asking if her daughter will get ill.

OneDenimQuoter · 04/05/2025 13:49

I think they are partially cooked

It looks "cooked". It isn't. The manufacturing process makes it look like that.

Ah well, I've already invested way too much time in this (that's what Day 21 of being ill does to you heh) so I concede I may be wrong!

I'll have a sneaky pick next time I'm at ALDI.

Keep at bottom of fridge because it's the coolest?

AthWat · 04/05/2025 13:51

Are there really this many people in the world who don't know you can buy cooked chilled battered chicken and uncooked chilled battered chicken? Really?

Zippidydoodah · 04/05/2025 13:52

Yanbu and I hope your daughter is ok! That’s so negligent.

Most people know to check, you’d have thought.

FGSWhatMoreCanISay · 04/05/2025 13:52

Oh yes that makes sense about it just being the coolest part of the fridge.

In any case I hope your DD is fine @Friends1996 it's much more likely the chicken wasn't contaminated with anything.

I think most people are aware that you can buy uncooked or cooked chicken products. I've never confused the two in person, because they're quite different in nature, but I guess it's harder to determine on photos!

My daughter once ate uncooked bacon rashers and I was a bit worried even though I knew it was likely going to be okay. She was fine in the end.

TheHappyBug · 04/05/2025 13:53

Looks raw to me.

I did think that but half the posters on this thread are still inisting that product is cooked.

Changeyourlifes · 04/05/2025 13:57

to be honest I wouldn’t have immediately thought that was completely raw. Raw chicken is soft/slimy/shapeless whereas the food shown on the website looks in a much firmer shape. I definitely would have checked the packaging though and not blindly tell others to eat it as is.
