How can you find out why someone had an ankle monitor

IcyPenguin101 · 03/05/2025 19:02

Someone staying with a neighbour has an electronic monitor on their ankle. I assume someone would only have an ankle monitor if they have gotten out of prison and that is their place of record of probation purposes. I’m not friendly enough with the neighbour to ask straight out who is the person but I assume a family member. I’m basically wondering if I have to be concerned. I’m assuming they’d only permit ankle monitoring for something low level?

You have no right to know.

toomuchfaff · 03/05/2025 19:15

Naff all to do with you.

@lnks

I don't agree actually. You always have a right to know what someone did who lives next to you.

Kilroyonly · 03/05/2025 19:16

How is it in any way your business?

StMarie4me · 03/05/2025 19:18

No a tag can be indicative of a non custodial sentence with house arrest ie drink driving can result in a curfew and the tag enforces it.

JLou08 · 03/05/2025 19:19

Well you could try goggling them to see if there was a news article about their arrest or conviction.
I wouldn't be concerned by it, anyone staying with any neighbour could be a risk so you should be cautious with anyone you don't know well. At least with a tag this person is being monitored, plenty of criminals and predators going around society unchecked.

Runnersandtoms · 03/05/2025 19:20

Tagged curfews are often used for people who have been bailed pending trial because if they later get a prison sentence they take off half the days they spent on a tagged curfew. So it's possible they are only accused of something and haven't been convicted yet.

In any case I don't think there's any way you can find out without asking the neighbour.

ilovesooty · 03/05/2025 19:21

None of your business, especially if you're not on close terms with the neighbour in question.

Runnersandtoms · 03/05/2025 19:21

Anything very high level they wouldn't get bail or a tag.

No. You don't. Your neighbours are entitled to their privacy.

That. For goodness sake, mind your own business.

Ruggerlass · 03/05/2025 19:25

It’s really none of your business and they will be being closely monitored. Anyone can be living next to someone who has a criminal record and could be on licence.

Other than asking them you cannot.
Are you that nosey?

You assume wrongly. Are they from another country by any chance? Tags are being used now for asylum seekers and other undocumented immigrants.

Toootss · 03/05/2025 19:26

Could it be a child molester or would they not be tagged.

No, you don't. 🤣
You might want to, it might even be beneficial at times, but there's no right to know.

Macey9 · 03/05/2025 19:28

It could be anything really, usually some kind of curfew, but it could even be to monitor alcohol use.

What if the prison was full and they just let them out

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 03/05/2025 19:33

I've seen pigeons like that at Waterloo Station, and was always puzzled at what was going on, because I'm told that THEY used pigeons during WW2 for spying or something... 🤔

Dillydollydingdong · 03/05/2025 19:35

So nosy! And if you found out what the crime was, what would you do about it? Move away?

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 03/05/2025 19:37

none of your business OP. Keep your nose out.

if he was a paedophile and you have young kids then the police have a duty to make you aware. As they haven’t you can assume it’s not that. Anything else in not your business.

Worried8263839 · 03/05/2025 19:41

You can have tag for bail or community based sentence, monitoring alcohol use, gps location monitoring for domestic abuse, prolific and sexual offending or tag as an early release scheme from prison. Despite all of these, you do not have a right to know unless you may be at risk from that person. Are you in a relationship with them? Yes- Claire’s law. No- not your business. Do you have children that may come into contact with them? Yes- Sarah’s law application. No- not your business

Trovindia · 03/05/2025 19:43

It's interesting how many people are saying it's none of the OPs business when the principle of justice in this country is that it should not only be done, but be seen to be done, which is why they're are public galleries in courts and journalists are able to go and report on cases as standard.

I would also want to know, but it's not so easy to find out.
