Greta Thunberg - why would she be regarded badly?

StrawberryDream24 · 02/05/2025 09:49

I've just met someone who was extremely scathing of a woman dressing as Greta Thunberg for an "inspirational women" dress up type thing.

She didn't elaborate, other than that it was ridiculous for someone to have done that and she had to hold her tongue in telling them so (and the circumstances allowed for no further discussion for me to find out why she felt that way).

I don't know a great deal about GT but what is this lady on about? Has anyone any idea? Is there something I'm missing?

Because she's self righteous and preachy, which rubs most people up the wrong way, and likes to moan and point fingers without posing many realistic solutions, like most climate change fanatics.

Buy she doesn't usually fly - precisely to not be a hypocrite.

She does sail on a private boat which most of us do not have the means to do. I admire greta and her message but she is incredibly privileged and it is a bit irritating.

This.

And also her stance on TWAW. Odd approach for someone who always talks about science and evidence.

I hate the way people who call out Israel are labelled “pro hamas” or anti semetic. I think what Israel is doing is absolutely disgusting but that doesn’t make me pro hamas or an anti -semite.

Because she's not actually doing much to improve things. It's very easy to complain and pick fault. Keeping your head down and working to resolve the problems you see is much harder.

She's the face of a movement. Change needs work, in the example of climate change it requires work in the form of technological advancements and/or radical political policies like culling the populations of Asia and Africa. That's why people oppose her.

It's interesting that outrageous & comments like this don't get as much push back on MN as it should. Most read and just scroll by, but mention something like private school (perhaps not a great example) and the whole morality & ethics brigade pours in denoucing it (not that there isn't something to debate in there!). A racist and pompous nobody arrogantly posts about wanting an inhumane 'culling' of Asian and African populations as if they were animals, never mind that it goes against universal principles of equality and human rights, and nope it stays there.

Policies relating to racial violence have never resulted in anything but suffering, and discrimination leads to never-ending conflict and instability on both sides. Please remember when posting your careless thoughts that incitement to violence (which is what you are doing) are crimes under law and should really just stay in your head and never be shared.

You really think that most people who chant that slogan are actually saying that? Including Hamas?

I believe it is the type of solution most of the worldwide protests about Israeli genocidal action is calling for, yes.

I cannot speak for Hamas, not would I want to, as I do not support terrorism in any way

ACynicalDad · 05/06/2025 09:14

She's overly confrontational, hypocritical, overly simplistic and focuses on the west rather than the big issue. I'd forgotten she existed, wish you hadn't reminded me.

RobinEllacotStrike · 05/06/2025 09:22

GT & others are currently sailing to Gaza on a yacht. Except despite all the wind - evidenced by the Gazan flag Flying - they are not using sails/wind but the yacht’s powerful diesel engine.

but sure they are sailing to Gaza by wind power like the great environmentalists they are.

there seems to be oodles of hypocrisy & manipulation in this whole movement & GT is part of that.

Don't be racist.

Is 'gammon' a recognised ethnicity now? How interesting.

Gammon is a racist term.

Haven't laughed this hard in at least a week, many thanks 😂

Gnarab24 · 05/06/2025 09:37

She’s regarded badly because the propaganda against her works.
The same way most climate action groups are regarded badly.
we’re all sitting back doing fuck all as the global elite burn the world for their own enrichment, in fact worse, we’re criticising the people trying to do something about it.
Noone wants to change their comfortable lifestyles, we’re like frogs in a pot.

Define “gammon” then.

So why not just say that? Instead of a slogan from the Hamas charter abouthow the whole of the river to the sea should be Palestine.

Dotjones is a known ‘shit poster’ and weirdo who says inflammatory far right things for attention. Most people don’t bother engaging as their strangeness speaks for itself.

I do agree with you overall though.

Small minded, ultra-nationalist, bigoted arsehole who gets apoplectic with rage over things like electric cars, vegan sausages and pronouns.

So a young black woman can be a gammon then. Noted.

Is the problem here that I said 'gammon', you immediately thought 'white person', and now you're in a mood because you've hurt you own feelings?

Not at all. Because I know that’s exactly what you meant by it but are pretending otherwise once you were called out a few times. Like people who pretend Karen isn’t a racist, sexist, ageist term.

Ok weirdo. Outside of the cesspit of GB news and the daily mail, normal people don't think Gammon is a racist term. If you hear the word and immediately assume it's a criticism of whiteness, when race has nowhere else been mentioned, that's very much a you problem. Gammon is an equal opportunities insult; anyone who has ever complained that their local Tesco is selling Pride t-shirts or wished migrants would drown before their small boats reach our shores can wear it with pride.

ClaredeBear · 05/06/2025 12:52

Because she shows up people, who consider themselves to be her “elders”. They don’t want to face up to the reality of the situation and are bitter someone so young is so passionate and driven. Not to mention the misogyny.

LoafofSellotape · 05/06/2025 12:55

Pocodaku · 03/05/2025 00:07

GT always grated on me. It wasn’t that she was wrong—her facts were sound—but the way she delivered them felt like a sustained moral indictment. Her speeches were thick with fear and panic, her tone rigid and accusatory. When she said “How dare you,” it didn’t feel like a rallying cry—it felt like a judgment. Rather than drawing people in, it often pushed them into defensiveness or fatigue.
There was a kind of purity in her stance that left little space for complexity. Everything was urgent, everything catastrophic. The media turned her into a symbol, endlessly amplifying her anger and grief, until it became hard to separate her message from the performance of outrage.
What disturbed me most, though, was her effect on children. So many young people absorbed her panic without the tools to process it. They weren’t inspired to act—they were afraid. Climate anxiety spiked, and for many kids, the message became not “we can fix this,” but “we’re doomed and no one’s listening”.

This is very true. I also don't have time for anyone who encourages kids to miss school to go on a march/protest.

Won't somebody think of the children? Imagine taking action over something you're passionate about and creating a massive movement. The utter audacity.

She just created angst.

In your opinion. In mine she drew attention to a very important cause and got a lot of people including children interested.

I can't believe some people are mocking and criticising her autistic characteristics but that's people for you.

And because she's female apparently she's a puppet. Same old.

BigFatLiar · 05/06/2025 15:34

Gammon...that's a new one

Only thing I've ever associated gammon with is a rather tasty pork product, a favourite of my DH as a pub lunch.
