Greta Thunberg - why would she be regarded badly?

StrawberryDream24 · 02/05/2025 09:49

I've just met someone who was extremely scathing of a woman dressing as Greta Thunberg for an "inspirational women" dress up type thing.

She didn't elaborate, other than that it was ridiculous for someone to have done that and she had to hold her tongue in telling them so (and the circumstances allowed for no further discussion for me to find out why she felt that way).

I don't know a great deal about GT but what is this lady on about? Has anyone any idea? Is there something I'm missing?

I think the kindest thing I can say us that she is a naive self-publicist, who has possibly been manipulated by smarter people who should know better.
And she has jumped on the celebrity bandwagon about Gaza knowing, I suspect, very little about the complexities of that region.

Because she's not actually doing much to improve things. It's very easy to complain and pick fault. Keeping your head down and working to resolve the problems you see is much harder.

She's the face of a movement. Change needs work, in the example of climate change it requires work in the form of technological advancements and/or radical political policies like culling the populations of Asia and Africa. That's why people oppose her.

Culling the population of Asia and Africa whilst it's the west that mostly contribute to climate change.

What a silly suggestion.

I do not agree that quote means you are pro Hamas

Then what does it mean?

WoodlandLove · 05/06/2025 05:23

Renabrook · 04/06/2025 06:39

Now what has Gaza done to deserve this?

Oh my word. No civilian population has done anything to deserve the sheer hell the people of Gaza are enduring 😔
Hamas committed a terrible atrocity on October 7th 2023. I condemn that totally. I still think about the poor hostages often.
But, the collective punishment (which is a war crime btw) meted out to the ordinary Palestinians is an absolute obscenity. I genuinely am confounded by anyone who is still defending the genocide, or denying that the genocide is happening. The people have been deliberately starved. They're now being lured to collect food parcels and then shot at.
All children deserve peace, security, warmth, shelter, comfort and plenty of healthy food. These are human rights.
I'm in despair about Palestine, and don't know what to do 😥

You can't do anything meaningful just like in any other hideous conflict world wide sadly.

Then what does it mean?

Perhaps a two state solution, which would include the ceding of some territory to join Gaza and West Bank. Not including illegal settlements of course.

The gammons all absolutely despise her for her environmental activism.

soupyspoon · 05/06/2025 07:51

I thought this forum like to say that below 25 people's brains arent developed and are full of mush and they cant think for themselves or be expected to tie their shoe laces etc etc

Yet this young person is the font of all knowledge a a young age and needs to be taken seriously? Both in terms of what she did intend (messages about climate change strategies) but now also apparently what she may not have intended being pro Hamas/anti semitic? (or perrhaps she does intend to be this)

When English isn't a person's first language (speaking from experience) this isn't that strange. We rehearse what we can anticipate and may stumble when caught on the hop. How's your conversational Swedish?

Most Scandis (speaking from experience) have excellent English, particularly young people. Even those that skip school.

GT isn't teaching us anything we didn't learn in Alevel Geography 30 years ago.

You know, when some of us started caring about CFCs the ozone layer, deforestation.
These are not new things.

So you’ve known about this so long, what have you done?

Bbq1 · 05/06/2025 08:02

Ablondiebutagoody · 02/05/2025 10:14

Because she's a massive hypocrite. Same reason I won't be lectured about climate change by David Attenborough or Chris Packham. One has spent the last 60 years flying around the World with a film crew. Last time I saw the other one, he was flying over the savanna in a helicopter looking at flamingos. Bell end.

That's a very simplistic view.

MuskIsACnt · 05/06/2025 07:59

What do you suggest? The only thing that would make a real difference is if China stopped with the coal fired power stations. GT in that area doesn't seem to be making much progress. What would you do?

Then what does it mean?

The river = West Bank

The sea = Gaza

Both being places where the Israeli state & people continually blockade free movement of people & goods and continue to colonise Palestinian family homes.

Israel isn't the only country bordering Gaza.

CFCs and the ozone layer were tackled by an international treaty (Montreal protocol) which was successful and led to the banning of those materials and the subsequent arrest of the ozone damage.

GHGs are being tackled by the Paris agreement in a similar way.

People from Gaza can get out in routes other than via Israel (if those other countries allowed).

GT seems to be very one sided on this issue. I don't like anti-semites.

Musclewoman · 05/06/2025 08:27

It was the "How dare you" you speech that pissed me off....How dare she talk to people like that? Jumped up little twit.

Itscoldinside · 05/06/2025 08:32

HellonHeels · 02/05/2025 10:45

Tiresome and a Hamas supporter. If she stuck to climate activism she'd be just about tolerable. The support for terrorists makes it easy to form a negative view.

Terrorist support isn't a great look, unless you're a supporter of terrorists yourself. Anti semitic signs on marches totally wrong.

Chiseltip · 05/06/2025 08:36

ZaZathecat · 02/05/2025 10:06

I think it's because people want to put their head in the sand about climate change and convince themselves that Greta is just a loony

Do some research on climate shifts before 1919.

There's a reason climate doom mongers won't talk about anything before then.

Edited

We’re drifting way off topic here, but Israel repeatedly takes control of the Rafah crossing into Egypt. And blocks free movement of Palestinians throughout Israel (Gazans visiting family in the West Bank require rarely issued Israeli permits). A Palestinian person literally is not free to travel from the west bank of thr river Jordan to the Mediterranean sea.

Nothing about that is “antisemitic”.

CarrigDubh · 05/06/2025 07:41

You really think that most people who chant that slogan are actually saying that? Including Hamas?

WoodlandLove · 05/06/2025 08:40

Itscoldinside · 05/06/2025 08:32

But, there's no evidence whatsoever that she supports terrorists. I think it's highly likely she's a pacifist (though I admit I don't know that for certain)
I haven't personally met anyone (no doubt they exist) who supports Hamas. For myself, I weep for the Palestinians but am utterly horrified by Hamas. I feel very sorry for ordinary Israelis who've suffered too, and recognise that they're not their government. I reckon that's a fairly mainstream view among supporters of a free Palestine.
